The first kitchen was back in 2016 using the DIY Slabs. We used the highest grade paint available B. Moore Cabinet paint 2 coats, plus 2 coats primer. These cabinets got another 2 coats of paint in 2020. They looked great until about 2022 when we noticed all the fibers in the MDF started separating and expanding. I thought maybe it might have been an early product defect that they had since fixed, so I reached out to the company and sent in a ton of pictures showing the issue. It was happening in several locations around the kitchen. Their response was that the warranty was for 2 years. They haven't changed anything about the product, and it's exactly the same. I am not sure which is more worrisome, the fact that they don't see this as an issue or the fact that they haven't improved their product in the last 7 years. I now know that they expect these fronts to last for only 2 years and don't stand behind their products. It's basically deposable cabinet fronts. They are affordable, but not priced as disposable. We always let customers know color and grain variation is common and should be expected with all our real wood products. We also encourage people to purchase samples before ordering, which it looks like you did not do. Every Wine Barrel project (and every Walnut, Mahogany and Barn Lumber project) is different than another. Online photos can also be deceiving; certainly, lighting plays a factor in finished shots that are sent to us. A wide color range is also much more common in a large project like a kitchen or island than in a 31” bathroom vanity like yours. > > What surprised me - and frankly it is something I’ve never seen in my time at Semihandmade, let alone in the 3000 Ikea projects we shipped last year - is the fact that you were unwilling to give us the opportunity to address your perceived issue before publicly airing your dissatisfaction. > > Yours is not even a complaint really, more a subjective opinion since - as you stated - the quality of the product is exceptional and the pieces arrived undamaged. By 12:15, during our lunch hour, you wrote us an email saying you were unhappy with a product. And in those instances - where livelihoods can be negatively impacted - business owners are afforded limited if any resources to remedy unfounded slights. As an example, we had a homeowner last year post a bad Houzz review because they found the price of our Reclaimed Snow doors too high. This was despite the fact that we make it clear Snow fronts are our most expensive offerings, and we also carry multiple Ikea-priced doors. When we confronted Houzz, I explained to them this wasn't even an actual paying customer, simply someone pricing our product. So then I researched 4 different companies that did doors and drawers for IKEA. I was getting the cabinets from IKEA, then DIY Shaker fronts and sides from SHM, which then needed painting. We found a highly recommended cabinet painted about 30 miles from us, but to save a few hundred dollars, shipped the SHM pieces directly there. I worried I would forget something, which then would need to be ordered from CA, shipped to the painter near Boston, then delivered to me. It seemed like lots of room for error. > > SHM made the process so easy. The looked at my IKEA CAD, and told me exactly what I needed to order. The order was not clumped by like drawers or doors, as one provided gave me, but labeled by each cabinet. Thus I could look through it with my CAD in front of me, and picture exactly what the cabinet would be. They walked me through questions and changes. Each package had the exact number from the IKEA CAD drawing on it (which I had played with between ordering and inventory, which meant the numbers no longer matched, but was still impressive -- so keep a PDF version of what you sent to SHM handy when you do your final inventory and install). But they were AMAZING to work with and the final product is beautiful. We purchased sequenced horizontal teak cabinets and yes, they weren't cheap, but they were worth every penny. I can't stop staring at them. A: Hello, Kathrine. Thank you for reaching out. These are most likely IKEA's white Sektion boxes. The only other color they have for Sektion is "dark brown wood effect". This is a great option when using darker door options, but the white Sketion cabinet is the go-to option. As you can see in these photos, you never see IKEA's cabinets since we make doors, drawer fronts, fillers, side panels, even toe kick. Alex **Q: Barker Doors vs Semihandmade vs Scherr's?** *(in Kitchens)* After a year of planning on using Scherr's doors for our kitchen remodel, I'm now contemplating some other options. I'm in touch with a couple of local cabinet makers for quotes, but since I live in a resort area, I don't have much hope that they'll be too reasonable for a DIY-er. Semihandmade seems to be the most expensive, but they do have 20% off DIY right now, which brings them down quite a bit in price. I'm waiting to hear back, but I think they also only have the standard IKEA door sizes, which doesn't work for us... we have a few custom sizes we need. Scherr's is the mid-range option. They are offering 10% off DIY, but their overall prices just went up a few days ago, so the estimate is quite a bit higher than the one I got a few months ago. They are familiar with IKEA cabinets and can do all of the boring for hinges, but they also charge an additional fee to work with an IKEA plan, which seems... weird. They've been great to communicate with, and very responsive, but I'm just having a hard time biting the bullet now, when I was absolutely ready to two weeks ago. (Wish I had done it then, instead of waiting for the sale.) Barker Doors is the least expensive, by far! My estimate from them is about half of Scherr's. They really seem to push their cabinet line; so while they \*do\* make doors for refacing, they're not the most helpful or knowledgeable when it comes to that. We would have to have the hinges bored by a local place, or do them ourselves... not a huge deal, as we've done it before, but something we weren't super excited about. And, again, price. So, anyone who's checked into any of these companies, can you give me the abridged version of who you ended up using, and why? Any regrets? A: We're fans of Scherrs, and have a lot of the respect for the quality of their products. We've been making Ikea doors for about eight years; I think they've been doing it even longer. Despite the fact that we are "competitiors" and are frequently bidding on the same projects, Scherrs and Barker being around and making great doors benefits every one of us in the Ikea ecosystem. I applaud anyone for transparency on pricing. Talking about that stuff is hard. Deciding what things cost is an especially tricky thing; all three of us manufacture in the US, so matching Ikea prices - or even coming close - is rarely possible. Things do also get complicated when custom elements are added. That's likely why you're seeking a company like ours in the first place, but it does come with an additional cost. At Semihandmade, we try and make up for the price gap by offering a wide variety of door options, solid support, and a really great customer experience. We fall short sometimes, but believe me when I say that really is always the goal. I'm honestly not even sure what point I'm trying to make here other than - I understand all the sides being presented here, and can definitely relate on multiple levels. Semihandmade started with just me, and the challenge of keeping the lights on is never far from my mind, so I "get" taking things personally and having my feelings hurt... and maybe sometimes pushing a little too hard back. That's not your concern, though. As a consumer, you guys need to shop around, do your due diligence, and hopefully land on the company that serves you best. As a business, we need to continuously innovate, provide a quality product, and never stop focusing on our customers. Renovating is a bloodsport, full of obstacles and disappointments and more compromises than anybody ever deserves or expects. Pace yourselves. Maybe that's the takeaway here. And hopefully remember that - even if you don't go with one of us, or you do pick one of us and not the other, or you stick with Ikea doors, or (God forbid) you end up going the way of full custom - all of us really truly do care.
