Like all design, the circumstances can lead you in many different directions. **Q: One Small Kitchen, Many Doorways** *(in Design Dilemma)* My kitchen is in a small condo. It's awkward as well as ugly. I have two renovation plans: the cheap short term and the expensive long term. The walls are painted as a part of the short term plan and later on I'll do a before and after. I've got some good ideas and plans for how to gussie up the kitchen in its current configuration. But what about the long term. I'm stumped! The room is at the back of the apartment and, as you can see from the pictures, it has four doorway openings. In the picture with the single door, one is looking into the dining room. The cabinets are white melamine and the stove dates with the cabinets from an 80s flip. The wall to the left of the stove is the building's chimney. In the picture with the three doors, one is - from left to right - looking at the door to the back stairway, the opening to the "pantry" and the nook that used to house the refrigerator. Behind the behemoth of a fridge, is a blank wall where, I suspect one should have a kitchen table. To the right of that is the opening to the tiny hallway that has the doors to the office, bathroom, and bedroom. On the far left of the photo with the fridge, one can see the end of the short counter that houses the sink and the dishwasher. So, stove on one wall with 24 inches of counter space, sink and dishwasher on another wall, fridge on a third wall. All separated by doorways. The wall with the windows is the outside of the building, the wall with the fridge is the bearing wall. How would you configure this silly, silly kitchen? A: I would look into under counter drawer refrigerator and freezer. Then you could have open counters on all walls with open shelving above.
