A landscape design and build practice based in New York City creating bespoke gardens and landscapes for properties large and small within the Northeast. These landscapes are urban and residential gardens, large suburban properties, college campuses and public spaces. We offer our clients project management and installation of these landscapes. Additionally, we support our clients with long term oversight of their landscapes to insure their lasting beauty.

Our collaborative process begins with establishing a detailed design for your site based upon your needs and aspirations, the opportunities and constraints of the site. We can then provide cost estimating and cost engineering services. Once approved we work to establish realistic goals and expectations, then we project manage the job through completion. Once installed and built we can also collaborate on long term management of the site.

We believe that every landscape and garden design is a custom job. Each site is distinctive. The design process is a very personal, collaborative process between client and designer. Our mission is to increase the quality of life for our clients (and user of the space) by creating functional and sustainable landscapes that are ecologically responsible as sensorial spaces.

Todd Haiman received his graduate degree with a Master of Science in Landscape Design from Columbia University. A graduate of the School of Professional Horticulture at NYBG, a member of APLD (Association of Professional Landscape Designers), Royal Horticultural Society, Metro-Hort, ASLA and AIA.

> I wanted to design my own garden, but I specifically wanted a rooftop landscape designer for my LI backyard because it is so small and narrow. I have some gardening experience, but nothing remotely on a professional scale and this project is going to be costly. I searched the web for a designer with real talent and it did not take me long to find Todd. I was delighted when he accepted my invitation. He was a pleasure to work with from the start. I was asked to provide a survey and I laid out my ideas on paper before we met. The day of our appointment, Todd came early. He wanted to walk the property alone. He was brimming with names of native plants that would work well on my property and I was writing as fast as I could trying to keep up. It was like learning another language. Todd suggested that I start a spreadsheet which I did, and it was so much easier to go back and narrow down the materials I needed for installation. He brought me to a whole other level. It was the best investment of time and money that I could have made and in the process, I made a friend.

> Todd Haiman was a perfect match for the challenges presented by my yard in Sunnyside Gardens, an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places and an official New York City landmark neighborhood. The final design had to be attractive from multiple levels by me and my neighbors, while meeting historic guidelines.
>
> From the beginning, Mr Haiman listened carefully to my list of requirements—from usage of space to native plant preferences. His use of hardscape materials and planting areas reflected the design intent of the original planners of Sunnyside Gardens, and we were both committed to the idea that the final plan could be replicated by others in the community. An unexpected design element, precipitated by pandemic recommendations, was the establishment of four socially distanced seating areas that are practical yet beautiful.
>
> Mr Haiman, a consummate professional, personally managed this project from initial design through completion. He balanced this client’s needs and wants with his extensive knowledge and expertise, and he delivered an unforgettable design that met everyone’s expectations, including those of regulatory agencies. On this project, Mr Haiman’s coordination of five contractors—electric, masonry, landscaping, nursery, and exterior furnishings—was seamless, and each team’s professional skill and enthusiastic respect for the design ensured that project was completed on time and within budget. Since completion it has solicited rave reviews!

> Todd and his team have become one of our go to references for any and all landscape design needs. We were introduced by one of our long time clients and collaborated on their Tribeca Loft project. We have continued the relationship whenever possible.
>
> Todd is extremely thoughtful and conscientious. His care to balance client's desires, budget and goals are paramount and it shows. He has an expert knowledge of plants/species and what serves environments well. Its our pleasure to continue to work with them and highly recommend their services to all.

**Comment from Todd Haiman Landscape Design:**

> Working with your firm is what allows me to say "love my job!". Truly fortunate to collaborate together and mesh our talents. Thank you!

**★★★★★ — HU-824881193, Dec. 2020**

> We are HUGE fans of Todd- not only his design eye, his materials, his project management and his final result but he is a great guy to partner with on a landscape project- a total joy to work with. He really listens and makes suggestions where the end project still feels like something that was ours in concept but is 100X better because of what Todd brought to the effort.
>
> We could not provide a stronger recommendation for Todd- for his design skills, his implementation and his maintenance. We love our roof garden so much and Todd really made this happen.

**Comment from Todd Haiman Landscape Design:**

> This project has been a labor of love. Watching the landscape evolve and mature is incredibly rewarding. Thank you!

> We have a second home in the Catskills and had just renovated our interior and were anxious to conquer the outdoor space. Through a recommendation we found our way to Todd’s firm THLD. We requested a design that evoked a sense of place, endemic to the Catskills. We entertain frequently, wanted a firepit, native landscape, privacy, seasonal interest, multiple areas to congregate, an inviting entrance to our property and functional paths. Todd’s firm created a low maintenance, fun landscape that complemented the design or our home. We are ecstatic with what THLD accomplished for us. Highly recommend them! 5 stars!!!

**Comment from Todd Haiman Landscape Design:**

> Working with you is like being with family! Such fun we have had designing your property.

**★★★★★ — Tintori Castings, April 2020**

> We have been working with Todd Haiman since he approached us in the Fall of 2015 with his ideas for 2 custom fiberglass fountains for his client. He said, "Can you make this?" and our enthusiastic "Yes!" started a superb working relationship with him that we have enjoyed ever since. Todd is a great designer of garden spaces and we love seeing his concept drawings and ideas. He has an amazing knowledge of how plants with thrive, and how to make environments beautiful and practical. Tintori Castings loves making planters or other custom features for his landscape projects because we know he makes his clients happy, and we love to partner in that. Todd is a hands on designer who has always been on site for deliveries of our product to insure all is well with his clients. Bottom line: we love partnering with Todd.

**Comment from Todd Haiman Landscape Design:**

> Always great to collaborate with you! Look forward to future projects.

**★★★★★ — Rebecca Hoppy, Dec. 2018**

> We had a terrific experience working with Todd Haiman, and can not recommend him more highly. We contacted Todd after viewing his portfolio online and he exceeded our expectations over the course of the revamp of our Brooklyn backyard. At our first meeting, Todd made us feel at ease immediately, warmly listening to our ramblings about what we hoped for, expertly translating our conversations into beautiful design concepts. Todd patiently led us through the entire design and build process, including meticulous design refinement to our personal taste, style and budget; recommending, vetting and managing contractors, vendors and supervising all work, down to the last detail. We now engage Todd Haiman design for landscaping services and continue to be impressed by his talent and integrity as a professional.

**Comment from Todd Haiman Landscape Design:**

> We had a great deal of fun working with your entire family. Excited to see your children enjoying the space as much as you and your husband!

**★★★★★ — CK Kay, Dec. 2018**

> An over-the-top positive review, but, I swear no hyperbole here! I cannot say enough good things about Todd. He's the best! Truly. He listened to my crazy wish list and made it happen, with a level of creativity, skill, efficiency, and patience (those dang building permits!) that blew me away. I told Todd that my dream was to have a hammock, ensconced in a farmy vibe, with a legitimate vegetable garden and he made it happen. I loved working with him. Wait! I take that back... It was actually no work for me at all. Cue more superlatives.... He's the absolute BEST! If you're thinking of bringing him on for your project, you'll be lucky to have him.

**Comment from Todd Haiman Landscape Design:**

> A dream job! Thank you so much for trusting in my practice's abilities to create this vision!

**★★★★★ — E Horowitz, Dec. 2017**

> My husband and I engaged Todd Haiman Landscape Design to design and build our townhouse garden in midtown Manhattan. We had just finished our home/interior renovation and were in dire need of his expertise to complete the exterior space. We researched quite a few different designers, but loved Todd's aesthetic and his honest approach. Todd worked closely with us on our vision for the garden and went above and beyond what we were expecting. Our garden is truly an oasis. We feel so lucky to have found him.

**Comment from Todd Haiman Landscape Design:**

> We had so much fun collaborating on your project! Thank you again for the opportunity to design, install and manage your garden. Look forward to watching the garden mature through the forthcoming years as we maintain it.

**★★★★★ — User, Dec. 2017**

> "I have had the pleasure of working with Todd of THLD on three projects over the last two years. All three were roof garden/terrace designs, unique to the site and client needs.
>
> The first job, a downtown Manhattan terrace garden included use of porcelain paver tiles for the terrace on multiple grades and wall tile work. The second job finished earlier this year featured a 50 ft trellis of beautiful, rich salvaged wood on a terrace in Brooklyn Heights. The latest is a project also located at a lower Manhattan residence with two terraces, incorporating custom designed trellises to mask unattractive walls, built -in lounge seating with storage and a dining area.
>
> I have found Todd to be the ultimate professional and colleague. He is very easy to work with, flexible and adaptable to changes as they present themselves. He expects and respects the input from all trades and artisans collaborating on the project. He strives to exceed client expectations while making the process rewarding for all contractors collaborating on the project."

**Comment from Todd Haiman Landscape Design:**

> Thank you for the kind words. Look forward to continuing our very successful collaboration on future project!

**★★★★★ — Kingston Krafts, Dec. 2017**

> Todd was amazing to partner with. He has an impeccable eye for design, selection of material and style. He was very easy to communicate with and very responsive. Provided updates throughout the entire process without even having to ask. Scheduling and delivery was easy. A plus is that he is a genuine good man and great person. So working with him was just so easy and pleasant. Highly recommended!

**★★★★★ — Julia Steiman, June 2017**

> Todd Haiman designed and project managed three terraces for us (the largest of which is 360 sq ft). These spaces had a lot of potential, but were also challenging in terms of their unusual dimensions. Todd excelled at every stage of our project:
>
> During the design and planning phase Todd struck a delicate balance, marrying creative vision and expertise with a truly collaborative approach to design. The final plan took into account all of our goals for the spaces and turned their challenges into opportunities for added interest and utility.
>
> After we settled on a plan, Todd guided us through the overwhelming process of purchasing custom planters and hiring irrigation and carpentry teams, which required a tremendous amount of cost engineering.
>
> When spring came, Todd meticulously project managed multiple phases of the install, working closely with several teams to implement the design. He has clearly earned the respect of his contractors over the years, and I think his leadership throughout the implementation phase elevated the level of craftsmanship in the finished product.
>
> Even though our project was completed over a month ago, we have since seen Todd several times, including once when he stopped by to check on our plants and deliver a sunflower from his personal roof garden. We will be continuing to work with Todd and team for management of our gardens going forward.

  - Description: In the heart of the West Village, this 10 x 30 terrace is meant to evoke the client’s passion for a bucolic homestead on a ranch. The intent was to create a pastoral oasis within the urban metropolis. The space overlooks a courtyard and is surrounded by other luxury condos. Thus privacy was a key component for the client, which is achieved by the planting of switchgrass along the perimeter — evoking the prairie grassland. ## Community Q&A

**Q: what will happen when wood stars to decay ?** *(in Photo Questions)*

what will happen when wood stars to decay ?

A: Thank you for your query. All items in a garden have an ephemeral quality. We planned for this by having access in the rear to the multiple gabions and can replace them. The ones that decay are used for firewood.

**Q: how much did this project come out to approximately? Beautiful work!** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thanks for your kind words, Nicki. The client requested privacy on that matter.

**Q: Type of tree** *(in Photo Questions)*

What are the type of trees used here and bottom plantings?

A: Betula plataphylla. the groundcover was Heuchera 'autumn bride' and various ferns, carex cherokeensis.

**Q: Mediterranean pavers** *(in Photo Questions)*

Pool decking color suggestions.

A: That's dependent upon your color palette. Consider creating a color palette along with your pool design that relates to entire landscape, hardscape , furniture, site amenities and architecture of your home.

**Q: Beautiful combination!** *(in Photo Questions)*

What type of grass is this? And what plant has the white umbrel flowers?

A: The white umbels are Daucus carrota. I honestly can't recall the grass we used, been awhile. This site was a mixture of 6 hours sun and part shade - consider Sesleria autumnal, Carex cherokeensis, among others.

**Q: can anyone tell me the name of the white bark trees?** *(in Photo Questions)*

..

A: Linda - if you are referring to the groundcover - that is Heuchera americana. Commonly known as Coral bells.
