> Working alongside Colin (Sensitive Information Hidden) and his team is always a remarkable experience. It combines enjoyment with insightful learning opportunities, making every moment worthwhile. Every photo shoot with this amazing team is a 12-hour odyssey where we share ideas and experiences, making the process feel like a joyous celebration.

> "We had an outstanding experience working with Flavin Architects. We chose them because of their focus on natural modern design—creating modern homes that are beautifully integrated with their environment—and they delivered beyond our expectations. Their distinct understanding of space, materials, and how they interact—along with their mastery of form and function—made the entire process exceptional. Beyond their creative and thoughtful design work, they brought a structured process that guided us seamlessly through every stage, from initial design and feedback to cost management.
> Taking on a project as significant as building a home can feel incredibly daunting, with a million decisions to make along the way. Colin and the Flavin team—Michele, Ben, Lauren and Heather-- helped us navigate it all, focusing our attention on the key questions while managing even the most minute details with precision.
> Like any project, we encountered challenges, but Flavin Architects consistently rose to the occasion, coming up with brilliant solutions to overcome them. Additionally, their close collaboration with the builder throughout the construction phase was incredibly important to us. They ensured that the design vision was executed with precision, while also addressing construction challenges and keeping everything on track.
> What truly set them apart was how carefully they listened and advocated for our needs. They took the time to understand our aspirations and translated it into a home that feels both refreshingly modern and perfectly attuned to its surroundings. Their attention to detail and ability to balance aesthetics with practicality ensured every aspect of the design was both beautiful and highly functional.
> Flavin Architects exceeded our expectations in every way. We highly recommend them to anyone seeking a team that combines creativity, expertise, and a meticulous approach to natural modern design, project management, and construction collaboration."

> We worked with Colin and his team to build our California modern dream home in the woods of Dover. The level of professionalism and attention to detail is superior. The style of modern that Colin and his team execute is clean, crisp, mid-century modern with exquisite touches of detail and uniqueness. Mike, who is part of the Flavin team was instrumental throughout our build and was highly accessible, knowledgable and showed great depth of creativity and problem solving. We couldn't be happier with our custom home.

**★★★★★ — Simon McRae, Dec. 2023**

> The Flavin team took our initial concept, and while remaining true to its essence, expanded it and embellished it in ways we could never have imagined, turning it into a design that is beyond our expectations. We are truly inspired and delighted with what they have created. And all along the way, they were friendly, collaborative and attentive to our questions. They worked closely with the builder at every step to turn out this wonderful home. I can't imagine anyone else doing better with our brief.

> One of the best design architectural design firms in the Boston area. We truly admire the wonderful team at Flavin. Thank you for always inspiring us. Cheers!

> We started working with Colin and team on our mid century modern renovation in 2021, the project was completed in 2023. Working with the flavin team is an absolute pleasure, they are highly professional and quickly developed a shared vision for the project with us. They listen to our ideas and work them into a coherent design for the house that is respectful to original architecture while bringing it to the 21st century. They handled all details such as permitting and helped us select a great general contractor to realize the project. The flavin team remained highly engaged throughout the full lifecycle of the project, including construction, review, punch list etc... going the extra mile to make sure our needs were met. 100% recommendation for Colin and team!

> Flavin Architects is the high quality team to execute your modern home vision. Knowledgeable, great listeners and fun to work with! We are currently designing our California dream home in New England with them and they have been amazing to work with.

> Flavin have been amazing throughout our home design process. Having worked with a number of architects in the past, I can say that Flavin is truly world class in their execution and thoughtfulness. We've spent many hours talking and meeting with Colin and appreciate his patience, honesty, and commitment to excellence. He strikes the perfect balance of creativity and professionalism that is critical for successful modern home design. The team he's assembled all share Colin's passion for creating family homes that are both beautiful and pragmatic. We can't wait to come home to the house they designed for us!

**★★★★★ — dena bancroft, June 2021**

> Colin Flavin and his team went with our flow and continue to have patience as we ponder our way forward with building a new house. We started working with Colin prior to Covid, designing a new house in western massachusetts. My husband and I loved the process we went through over the course of months, meeting with Colin at the property, sending his team our ideas, pictures and house dreams that they took and made far better than our imaginations could ever do. Did I mention how many times we would change our minds about things and how receptive and wonderful they were in keeping pace with our changes!??! After a number of months we got very close to a house design that matched our thoughts and needs and then Covid happened and we pulled the plug and decided to wait. I am writing this review during the continued "waiting period" because I know we will build that house in the future and Colin is the only architect I would use going forward. He is so personable, such a good listener, is able to steer without dominating and the level of technology Flavin Architects offers is the highest ideal for visualizing and maximizing how we can "see" what we are thinking. And just so any reader has context here- we are talking about a multi level 4,500 square foot home with huge panels of glass, a contemporary modern vibe without being too cold or sterile feeling, while maximizing long views. oh boy, I get reinvigorated even thinking about the possibilities!

**★★★★★ — Peter S, Dec. 2020**

> After extensive research to find the right firm to assist with the restoration of our 1950 north shore mid century home, we knew that Flavin Architects was the perfect fit for the project, as soon as we came across their profile on Houzz. Colin and Heather provided us with creative solutions that would preserve the integrity of the original architects vision, while incorporating present day advances in building/construction/ and technology. The entire Flavin team has been great to work and are always happy to assist with last minute design changes, modifications, and direction.

**★★★★★ — Alexandra Elliott, Dec. 2020**

> This architecture firm is extraordinary. The initial hand drawn design was inspired and breathtaking and then the process from finding the right builder to working within a budget was excellent. We feel so fortunate to have found Flavin architects for our carport and studio design.

**★★★★★ — nsn1, Dec. 2020**

> Flavin assisted in a renovation project to transform a traditional home to a contemporary space fitting our needs. A talented, creative and caring team.

  - Description: In Southborough, MA, this modern addition to a historic late 1880s house hovers on piers above a sloped site. Conceived as a floating structure above a concrete plinth, the house embraces the property’s natural landscape. Expansive glass creates a tree-house feel. The exterior palette—comprising architectural concrete, steel, mahogany slats, and copper flashing—anchors the new structure with rich material contrasts.

  - Description: The house sits at the center of a sloped, wooded property, buffered from the adjacent suburban road by tall pines. A winding driveway ascends to reach a strikingly modern residence, tucked into its natural setting. A plinth of board-form concrete supports the main floor, its surface echoing the natural textures of the surrounding woodlands. Mindful of the road below, the north face embraces privacy and opacity, interrupted by a few thoughtfully placed windows. Carefully detailed mahogany screens…

  - Location: Newton, MA

  - Description: Our client asked Flavin Architects to envision a modern house on a south-facing site in a residential neighborhood in Newton, MA. Tiered Modern was our first commission that began amidst the pandemic. The disruption caused by COVID-19 gave us the opportunity to reset, and hone our design approach, centering a completely collaborative experience with our client. The design process we employed on this project, a home for a young family in Newton, has become a benchmark for our firm’s approach. Fro…

  - Description: North Shore, MA Our client approached Flavin Architects to renovate their oceanfront home in the North Shore, designed originally by the architect Edward Weinshanker in 1959 for the Lappin family. Flavin opened up and brightened the interior, creating an airy loft-like feeling within the space which was once a humble midcentury modern home. The Bluff House is the final product. This house is based on the more organic approach of the West Coast that was brought east by William Wurster, the dean o…

  - Description: In a pocket of woods not far from Walden Pond, this distinctly modern house settles effortlessly into its surroundings. Conceived as a floating architectural bar, the house embraces the property’s glaciated landscape. It seems to balance on two small hills, above a partially exposed concrete plinth. From the outset, our clients sought a home that was sensitive to the site and environment, as well as energy efficient. On the main floor, continuous glazing opens the living spaces and primary bedro…

  - Description: Newton architect Samuel Glaser designed the jewel-box Leventhal House in 1949, for a member of a prominent local family. Over time, the home has been sensitively maintained and updated by a small number of devoted owners. Flavin’s recent updates included replacing the original garage with a new flexible outbuilding and reimagining the adjacent exterior spaces, clarifying the relationship between house and accessory structure. We worked in tandem with, and in support of, Matthew Cunningham Landsc…

  - Description: Our client, an artist, approached Flavin to design an accessory studio/living space and carport in respectful conversation with their 1949 house by architect Sarah Pillsbury Harkness at Six Moon Hill, Lexington. A National Historic Landmark, Moon Hill was developed in the late 1940s and early ’50s by The Architects Collaborative (TAC). Every one of its original homes survives—though all have been expanded and updated over the years. Harkness (1914–2013), a founding partner at TAC, designed three…

  - Description: Precise standing seam gable roofs and board-and-batten siding nod to the vernacular farmhouses of Lincoln, MA, where the house is located. A triangular wedge forms a canopy over the front door. Inside, the kitchen, dining, and living room spaces combine within a gable roofed pavilion. One of Flavin’s signature screens introduces an intimate scale over the kitchen island. The fireplace and chimney are placed off center in the space to allow floor-to-ceiling, east-facing windows in the kitchen. Bo…

  - Location: Lexington, MA

  - Description: Our clients wanted to replace an existing suburban home with a modern house at the same Lexington address where they had lived for years. The structure the clients envisioned would complement their lives and integrate the interior of the home with the natural environment of their generous property. The sleek, angular home is still a respectful neighbor, especially in the evening, when warm light emanates from the expansive transparencies used to open the house to its surroundings. The home re-en…

  - Location: Webster, MA
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: Cedar Cove Modern benefits from its integration into the landscape. The house is set back from Lake Webster to preserve an existing stand of broadleaf trees that filter the low western sun that sets over the lake. Its split-level design follows the gentle grade of the surrounding slope. The L-shape of the house forms a protected garden entryway in the area of the house facing away from the lake while a two-story stone wall marks the entry and continues through the width of the house, leading the…

  - Description: Devereux Beach House Our client presented Flavin Architects with a unique challenge. On a site that previously hosted two houses, our client asked us to design a modestly sized house and separate art studio. Both structures reduce the height and bulk of the original buildings. The modern concrete house we designed is situated on the brow of a steep cliff overlooking Marblehead harbor. The concrete visually anchors the house to stone outcroppings on the property, and the low profile ensures the s…

  - Description: Tidal Marsh Overlook Our client asked Flavin Architects to envision a modern house on a steeply sloped site overlooking the Annisquam River in Cape Ann, MA. The home’s linear layout is oriented parallel to the contours of the hillside, minimizing site disturbance. The stacked massing and galvanized steel detailing of the home recall the industrial vernacular of the Gloucester waterfront, and the dark color helps the house settle into its wooded site. To integrate the house more fully with its na…

  - Description: New Additions to Hoover + Hill This project is a continuation of the renovation and updating work Flavin Architects had previously completed at the 1958 Wales house, designed by architect Henry Hoover and Walter Hill. Our clients, a young family, desired more space for guests, a home office, a yoga studio, and covered car parking. The challenge was to respect the architects’ original vision and not to interfere with the perfect cruciform plan of the house. To accomplish these goals, we converted…

  - Description: In the early 50s, Herbert and Ruth Weiss attended a lecture by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius hosted by MIT. They were fascinated by Gropius’ description of the ‘Five Fields’ community of 60 houses he and his firm, The Architect’s Collaborative (TAC), were designing in Lexington, MA. The Weiss’ fell in love with Gropius’ vision for a grouping of 60 modern houses to be arrayed around eight acres of common land that would include a community pool and playground. They soon had one of their own. The…

  - Description: Set in the garden beside a traditional Dutch Colonial home in Wellesley, Flavin conceived this boldly modern retreat, built of steel, wood and concrete. The building is designed to engage the client’s passions for gardening, entertaining and restoring vintage Vespa scooters. The Vespa repair shop and garage are on the first floor. The second floor houses a home office and veranda. On top is a roof deck with space for lounging and outdoor dining, surrounded by a vegetable garden in raised planter…

  - Description: Modern House Reinvented This home received renovations and an addition by Flavin Architects, creating an entirely new glass front projecting over the sloping site. Outside, a landscape designed by Wagner Hodgson creates a series of lawn terraces retained by recycled steel I beams. These lead to a stately entranceway made of an impressive six-foot wide door on a pivot hinge. The existing home has been adorned with standing seam copper cladding, while our stucco and glass addition extends an inter…

  - Description: Modern Row House For this new home in Boston’s oldest neighborhood, Flavin Architects imagined an elegant structure that capitalizes on the natural light and beautiful views abundant in Charlestown. Our firm sought to respect the historic fabric of the city while designing for the 21st century. The façade, with its projecting two-story bay, divided windows and vertical proportions respect the adjacent urban pattern. Stripped down and elegant detailing, devoid of ornament, connects the structure…

A: @Jane McNabb The scale is located in the bottom right corner of the floor plan which is the last image in this album on Houzz. You can also see it on our website as well.

**Q: The green tile in bathroom, where is it from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I’m looking for a tile to match the outdoors like this green tile reflects its outdoor space. In my case it’s the ocean I’m trying to replicate on tile wall

A: @Enid Buchanan The green bathroom tile is Cadence Jade from Nemo Tile + Stone.
