Our firm has been in existence since 1994 (and is still full of great ideas!!) What a client can expect from my staff and I is expertise in securing design approvals from the Design Review and City Planning Departments as well as a beautiful unique home design suited well to the site. We also work with other agencies such as the Fire Departments and state agencies in rural areas and sites with fire concerns, creeks, forested areas, and biological protected zones.
My projects are usually on challenging sites such as built-over-water, floating on water, adjacent to water, extreme steepness, extremely narrow, rural/secluded and far from utilities, and high fire hazard areas. My clients can expect a high level of finishes and design quality in my designs.
Our work can be best described as California Modern, California Coastal, California Contemporary San Francisco Modern, Bay Area Modern, and warm modern. We also cater to those clients interested in Vaastu Shastra residential principles/planning, Critical Regionalism, and new ADUs (accessory dwelling units), SB-9 & SB-10 housing.

**★★★★★ — Annemarie Carpenter, Oct. 2017**

> We have worked with Robert since 2006 with our first remodel. He was very easy to work with & really listened to what we wanted. He just drew plans for us for our 2nd remodel & exceeded all expectations. He is very upfront about costs & timelines. He helped us through the permitting process as well as the daunting task of finding a contractor. We would highly recommend Robert for any remodel!

**Comment from Robert Nebolon Architects:**

> Thank you! I look forward to helping you on your third model.

**★★★★★ — ngayeelaw, Aug. 2017**

> We had a great collaboration with Robert on the remodeling/ expansion of our Eichler. He listened to our needs and gave great inputs. He is very patient as well as open-minded. The overall process was very smooth and the outcome was great. We highly recommend Robert!

**Comment from Robert Nebolon Architects:**

> Great picture! I enjoyed working with you and your husband on your project. Eichlers are a lot of fun to work on. It is a lot like restoring a mid-entury automobile!
> Best,
> Robert

**★★★★★ — James Wilkerson, July 2017**

> Robert went above and beyond when we built our Eichler inspired ranch. Not only was the plan amazing, but he flipped it to fit the lot, drew in a basement, and made several other changes to make the home fit OUR needs. He worked closely with our builder to make sure the construction was done correctly, and to his high standards. The home is AMAZING!

**Comment from Robert Nebolon Architects:**

> HI there,
> Thanks for the nice review. We really had a lot of fun on this, didn't we? And who knew that it was going to get so much attention? But the important thing is that it is a great home well suited to Tennessee's Atomic Couple plus one!
> Best,
> Robert

**★★★★★ — Psedu Gene, July 2017**

> I originally asked Robert Nebolon to modify our kitchen area to have more sunlight and make it warmer in the winter season. Before doing any design, Robert spent time learning what we value most, how we spent time in the house, what we expect in the coming years. He then came up a plan that elegantly materialize our vision and turns my childhood dream into reality. The new design transforms a dull 1960's house and harmoniously wove into the reflective surroundings, boldly surpassing its domain. It was not an easy job, but Robert succeeded it, beautifully and triumphantly.
> A case in the point: at city design review meeting, the committee members were so impressed by the beauty of the design and commented: although the design is not consistent with our existing building code, but we should change our code (so our city will not miss good designs)!

**Comment from Robert Nebolon Architects:**

> Hi,
> Thanks for the nice review. I look forward to the finished product one day soon, while enjoying a martini on the new terrace.
> Best,
> Robert

**★★★★★ — Feeney Inc., Oct. 2016**

> Feeney, Inc. had the privilege of working with Robert on the 2016 Sunset magazine's Idea House. The result was stunning and we can't wait to work with him again.

**★★★★★ — mbuilderb, June 2013**

> Having worked with Robert and his firm on a number of projects over the past 15 years I would recommend Robert Nebolon Architects for just about any home building project. Robert and his team are creative problem solvers who have the ability and experience to work in different architectural styles providing cost effective solutions to each project whether new construction or remodels. They are good team players and work well with contractors, subs and suppliers to find the best solutions to meet the clients needs. They are responsive and prompt with follow up and good listeners.

**★★★★★ — Daniel Gregory, June 2013**

> Robert Nebolon is an exceptionally talented architect with strong expertise in eco-friendly, resource-efficient design. I wrote about his work when I was the senior home editor at Sunset magazine, and more recently, as editor in chief of Houseplans.com when I asked him to create the design for an updated Eichler house plan, which he did brilliantly.
>
> His designs are imaginative, elegant, and pragmatic -- he carefully responds to client needs while producing artful solutions. I recommend Robert Nebolon with the greatest enthusiasm.

**★★★★★ — Karen Bird, June 2013**

> We asked Robert Nebolon to design an addition (primarily a kitchen with dining area, as well as a new full bath, a small family room, and a basement extension under the new kitchen) to our 1920's Berkeley bungalow. We wanted an addition which would be architecturally integral to the rest of the house. He succeeded marvelously; not only is the kitchen nicely integrated into the entire home, but it became - and remains - the beautiful, whimsical, utilitarian, and colorful space in which we and our guests prefer to spend our time. He was ceaselessly inventive and gracious during the design process, meeting our exacting criteria and frequent requests for changes. He was also skillful in nudging us to a conclusion of that design process at the appropriate time.
> Robert also effectively assisted us in choosing and working with the contractor and remained helpful and engaged throughout the entire construction project.
> The kitchen was pictured in the February 1997 issue of "Sunset" Magazine (see full page photo on page 109). This image of our very colorful kitchen also appeared on the cover of the Sunset Books' "Kitchens: Planning and Remodeling" (eighth edition) published in 2000.

> Robert Nebolon Architects is a top-notch firm. They are very professional and delivered unique, high-quality, top-notch plans for our home. We built a brand new home with views of the ocean and a creative floor plan that worked for our small lot and 2 kids. I would highly recommend them if you are looking for a quality architecture firm that will create a custom, one-of-a-kind home that is truly exceptional. Our home has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, various national and international design books, and also been on numerous home tours. Website with pictures http://www.rnarchitect.com/

**★★★★★ — wbelmer, Feb. 2013**

> Robert Nebolon puts himself 100% into each project he does no matter how large or how small. He helped our company build a 2100 square foot three story houseboat for our clients. He provided thoughtful guidance based on his many years of experience to both us and our clients, supporting our decisions and making our clients happy both with his design and our company's construction of the "Floating House". He is great to work with!

**★★★★★ — susanfordland, Feb. 2013**

> Robert custom-designed a modern style home for us. We had a good experience working with Robert and would certainly hire him again. We love the house and continue to live there.

**★★★★★ — Kenneth Winfield, Feb. 2013**

> Robert Nebolon Architects have provided a number of services for our firm over the years. We found them to be responsive and timely on projects that we required plan sets and drawings. We have also referred them to other clients as well.

 - Description: An active family of 4 (a couple and two little girls) approached the Architect with one condition: Design a modern “green” 3 bedroom/2 bath house on a teeny tiny 30’x50’ lot that suited their beach lifestyle. The site is in a very dense urban area of Hermosa Beach coast, one block from the beach where houses are on small parcels very close to one another, and where privacy and personal outdoor space are very precious commodities. - Description: This elegant modern home captures the magic of living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Constructed on piers over the water, the home gently suggests the curved forms of ships' hulls, seashells, and the bodies of fish. The four bedroom dwelling was built with a view to facilitate the active life of the owner's family, the strong relationship they have with the water, and their love of boating and fishing. The location also demanded a home that would be durable against the effects of a salty environ…

 - Location: Oakland, CA
 - Photos: 19
 - Description: This 1950 square foot residence for a family of four was designed to fit an extraordinarily narrow lot in the Rockridge area of Oakland. The only real solution was to design a vertical house and accept the fact that the garage would be prominent feature on the front. The sunny part of the site was the street frontage; the north-facing backyard would mostly be in shade. It made the most sense to locate the front door at the side since there wasn’t much room to place the door at its traditional fr…

The previous owners had remodeled the home to the point of abuse and the new owners decide to do a full remodeling and upgrade to the house. The entire front elevation was remodeled to be similar to previous Eichler and to fit into the Eichler neighborhood. However, the remodeling updates the Eichler look. Let's just say that this Ei…

The living room, the dining room and the kitchen are all under a new Great Room Roof which is the new dominant feature as seen from the street. Low water landscape design surrounds this beautiful remodel. Gone are the 8 foot ceilings, now replaced by a wood paneled ceiling (painted) and high windows and fill the great room with light.…

 - Description: The magnificent site is a sloped lot that faces due West with wonderful views of the entire San Francisco Bay Area. Access to the site was at the low end of the site. The slope itself was approximately the same slope of a staircase. An idea quickly unfolded that the bespoke contempoary house should be terraced into the slope and become part of the hill. Each wing would be under the landscaped terrace for the next uphill wing, thereby integrating the house with the natural landscape and the hill.…
