VOTE and tell us about it in the comments! A: A chandelier in the kitchen is like having a recess can over a dining room table......it just doesn't feel right! **Q: Constructive criticism wanted on house plan** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are getting set to begin refinements on our floor plans before sending them out for bids. We will be building a 2 story with approximately 3000 square feet per floor, slab on grade, on a river front lot. The home has a "daily living" side and an "entertainment" side on the main floor, along with a guest bedroom. The second floor has rooms for our 3 kids, plus the master, home gym, and office. There are stacked closets, which will be framed in for a future elevator. What would you do differently, while keeping the same basic footprint? A: I know second floor laundries are convenient (that's where the bedrooms are) but....with 3 kids some area to dump the dirty stufff when they are first coming in the house ("mud room") and to do the laundry while your watching TV....do you want to be going up and down the stairs? Laundry shoot????? **Q: Not sure what to do with our ceiling in our basement** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are in the process of finishing our basement. We are turning it into a classy man cave with a custom bar with a stone front. We have fairly dark laminate and dark cabinets for the bar. We are going with a lighter tan color paint for the walls. I am stuck what to do with the ceiling. Do we want it textured? Painted? I am not even sure what our options are at this point. A: Depending on the height (I like 8' min) of the room and any mechanicals that run below.....A sheetrock ceiling with some moldings and paint according to other decorations always looks good. **Q: Front hallway - Ugh need help!!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Need advice on how to change the look of my front entrance - this looks right into my kitchen table. I have no front closet. A: Inexpensive fix...Cabinetry on opposite wall with more space between them. Large mirror, larger bright print area rug and paint walls and door with a uniform color. **Q: Wasted landing space in 2-story foyer** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am so sick of this wasted landing space above our hall closet in the foyer. It is such a waste of space. It gets very dusty and is an absolute bear to get to to be cleaned. I have no idea what to do with the space. Anything that is put up there is just a big dust collector. I am considering 2 possible options and open to other ideas. 1. mount a fun "library style" ladder to the wall as a decorative accent so I can access the space more easily for cleaning and display? 2. Have a bridge build across from the 2nd floor railing making a long railed off catwalk? Thoughts? If you have seen some creative uses for this type of space please share. A: Budget???!! That is the issue. The ladder is a terrific idea and inexpensive. The "catwalk" would be expensive but give the Foyer a new dramatic look and additional space. Maybe bow out the middle ares to curve the railing. There is plenty of room between the doors and windows and would help the proportions of the wall. I assume there is a bedroom that will be able to access the catwalk and maybe use a glass door for that opening. **Q: What should I do with these shutters? Paint? Replace?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Just moved into our new house and these shutters are just...blah. Can't decide if I should paint, or what color, or if they just need to be replaced with something more substantial and a different color. Any suggestions? Thanks! A: I agree that the columns are too thin and out of proportion with the height.
