## Community Q&A

**Q: should I paint the chimneys black?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Been trying to find images of grey/charcoal houses with black brick chimneys but can't find any. So... opinions?
The house is charcoal. All the new cedar fences (on the right) and decks (on the left) are silvering and will end of driftwood-grey. The railing posts are powder coated gunmetal grey. Inside is all white modern and backyard has bluestone patios and board-formed concrete retaining walls. Thinking of painted the old brick chimneys black as they no longer fit in with the new color palette. Thoughts? Thx.

A: Definitely.

**Q: Vast blank wall space in living room** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I originally wanted to put one big piece of art on the wall behind the sofa, but I'm open to more ideas now. My style is eclectic and I do not care for gallery walls.

A: Yes, Allison. I believe black would be nice. The lamps should be shapely in order to add some curves to an area that is a lot of right angles.

**Q: back patio blues** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My son just bought this house and I would like to give him some advise on how to make the back patio more appealing. Should he make it bigger, grow some ivy on it ? will appreciate any ideas

A: First, I would get that small tree/bush away from the house. Kill it. Is there metal edging between the lawn and the stone? If not, this is preferable - do the brown not the green painted due to location. Facing the house ideas as follows. Left of the porch, some grasses (maiden hair or smaller so there is no slicey-dicey when you brush past them). Right of the porch I like the idea of a bench and - if possible a medium sized boulder. Then add a smaller boulder. There for you have the harmonious balance of three items outside the window. The bench should be made of wood, preferably distressed painted(red?) Plant a taller plant where the tree is however place it midway between the house and the lawn. Make is something fluffy that must occasionally be hard-pruned - thus you have different heights different years and won't grow tired of it. Planters on either side of the door - fountain grass center with colorful flowers in the warmer weather; plant rye seed in them in the late fall for the chia-planter look. Pavers leading out into the yard - preferably flagstone. Yes, clear fiberglass over the top for year-round use. Opt for some nicer patio furniture. A water feature is always a nice thought however it is an upkeep commitment. Tell him it is like a tiny above ground pool. Is he in for this or not? If so on the far side of the little tree replacement, with a fountain for sound, and two small stools for contemplation.

**Q: Front Porch Curb Appeal** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Suggestions for front Porch appeal? I'll be freshening up with white paint again in the spring on the exterior- the roof is new, so that green color won't change. It's difficult to see in the pictures but all windows have white metal awnings, each with hunter green stripes (darker than the roof green). I think these are pretty and old fashioned, although admittedly they could use some freshening up. The front porch and sidewalk are concrete, the front porch steps have peeling gray paint on them. The black blob on the left side of the porch is my mailbox. I plan on closing off the left front door (I have matching siding). I could take off the right screen door. So suggestions for front door color, railing, porch floor, steps, plantings, all welcome. Thanks, Kat

A: I've winnowed through all of these ideas. Flat stone or slate overlay on the porch and steps is a must - did this at my place and the most expensive ingredient is patience. Keep the railings - white. Keep the awning - retrolicious. Do paint the window trim to match the roof. Do curvy landscaping with edging. White picket near the end of the walk is a MUST - include a modest arbor if you can make it happen. Do not paint the porch ceiling blue - do white. A porch swing would so fit this place. Wooden screen doors is a nice idea. Paint front door an orange red or black-green. Cutesy pie house numbers a must. Don't do flower boxes - trust me that you will not keep them watered and thing will die and when they are empty in Winter I find them depressing. Please, no hanging baskets.

**Q: love the chairs** *(in Photo Questions)*

Please tell me who makes these chairs and where I can purchase a few?

A: Yes, these Ethan Allen chairs are the bomb.
