**Q: Landscape help - new home** *(in Landscape Design)*

We built a house and moved in September.  We didn’t do any landscaping and had everything just grass.  Now we need to bring some life to the house and don’t know where to start.  Looking for suggestions.

A: You have a beautiful home, with morning light exposure you will want to focus on plants around the house that don't require full sun to thrive. My suggestion would be to consider a simple evergreen foundation design and replace the concrete walkway with flagstone that is similar to the veneer on the house. You also could have the concrete landing veneered in a similar stone. In terms of the lawn and the yard I agree with Chiara, leave it open and welcoming. I would add one large flowering tree. Maybe a redbud, magnolia, or a dogwood. You have plenty of sunlight out there for any of those trees. A landscape architect can save you their design fee by drawing up a plan that gets you or the landscape contractor on the same page. Check out my website and video for some ideas: charlesearl.design

**Q: Gardening in full shade.** *(in Landscape Design)*

I now have ferns, hostas, astilbes, azaleas, boxwood,  Little Henry sweetspire, hydrangeas growing, and would like to find more shade loving shrubs.  I need bulk, height and evergreen if possible.  Pretty large area.

A: Hello Betty, Gardening in shade can be a real challenge, some additional plants to consider area: Mahonia aquifolium, Leucothoe fontanesiana, Dicentra spectabilis, and Polygonatum multiflorum.

**Q: Design for an area that likely can't be planted in** *(in Landscape Design)*

Small area, probably a little less than a 100SqFt rectangle bordered on one side by a dwelling and a walkway to the dwelling on the other. Currently covered in red gravel. Under the gravel is some lower quality soil as well as a couple spots of old concrete, which is why I think planting would be risky.  Gets a fair amount of sun in the summer, right on the edge of zone 6/7.  

Ideally just looking to spruce it up a bit and keep it looking less "bleh", hopefully all year round.  Some additional color would be nice in the warm months but I'm not looking for too much maintenance for a spot like this.

A: Gmn14, Thanks for the photos, landscape work is labor intensive and the preparation is always the least gratifying. Personally it reminds me of interior painting. All prep.
When you do have the time or possibly phase the work I would start by removing all the gravel. Remove the soil, Take care of your amendments for nutrient and soil texture and replant with. A few evergreen shrubs with some perennial color in front. the remaining area can be planted with vinca minor. 
I don't see a doorway from the house to the space, and I am not sure what you would be looking at while seated in the area so until I have that information.  I would consider it a pocket garden.

**Q: Thuja Arborvitaes on a road facing retaining wall** *(in Landscape Design)*

Hi there! I need help!
I live in a rental in Seattle, along a busy road. The Thuja Arborvitaes are planted along the sidewalk within a small, thin retaining that graduates in height, up to around 4-5 ft, from ground level. My concern is that they are getting road rash on one side, a couple arent doing very well. Over the 3-4 years that I’ve lived here, they’ve outgrown this planting area, and are starting to crowd out the rocks retaining them, slightly. I want to cut a couple of them out to transplant elsewhere, but am scared that if I cut any
of them the surrounding ones will die! Not wanting to cut, just feeling the need to thin them out.
Whats your advice if you’d be so kind, and should I just leave them yol they start to die off, or should I just add soil, and hope for the best?!  main point is that its a rental, That we rent from a buddy, so want to take care of things on property!!

To clarify, I didn’t plant them. They were here when we moved in. Also, over the years I’ve added soil and mulched only to have it run off in rain etc. In the spring I usually do a cleanup of the grass out of the area, and such, but it’s just become a large tangled mess of roots now! Not sure what to do!

A: Great looking hedge, maybe consider moving the edge of the planter 6-10" into the drive. There is a mixture of different material being used for edging, consider removing and replacing with one consistent material. Possibly 2" thick bluestone edging. Pour a 6" width of concrete at the base of the edging to reduce the outward movement of the edging over time. Backfill with loam to existing grade. Plant the entire bed with vinca minor if you don't like mulch. Clean out existing weeds in drive. It will give the arbs slightly more space to expand their roots while allowing for a car door to open over the top of the bluestone edging.

**Q: A work in progress: Perennial underplanting** *(in Landscape Design)*

I hate mulch and yet my new house has mulch gardens everywhere. Here's one section I'm trying to convert from mulch to live plants. 
I've got a couple things picked out but I feel like I've been looking at so many websites and so many plants I've driven myself loopy. I definitely want the plants pictured but I'm not sure what to fill in the middle area with (please excuse my extremely poor art work!) It's a partly shady spot, probably fairly dry because of the maple tree and if possible I'd love some evergreen foliage. Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated!! Oh and I'm in Connecticut, zone 6

A: I would look at other areas to consider putting in a perennial bed. Adjacent to the garden possibly near the house. Watchout with foxglove, and other poisonous perennials. One other consideration for CT are the deer.   
That's Norway Maple (invasive), I would consider cutting it down and have the stump excavated and replaced with loam. Remove the rock border and reseed the area.

**Q: exterior updates** *(in Landscape Design)*

Need help! What can I do to help with curb appeal? Obviously the shrubs need to go and be replaced, but what else can be done, shutters, window boxes, etc. Thanks!!

A: Hello Elizabeth, You have a fantastic home, I wouldn't add window boxes/shutters or change the color scheme (unless you want something different). Not sure what zone you are (whether the species of turf is dormant). But the installer did not blend into the existing lawn very well. There may be an issue with the soil beneath as well. It's worth taking a sample and sending to your local university extension center or garden center for testing. While you are at it you can test the plant beds once you have the shrubs removed and the root systems removed. A design professional can give you a front yard design that specifies species that are appropriate to your climate and take into consideration site specific factors. They will also be able to discuss options for the walkway, lighting, and irrigation design.
