Kevin has been practicing architecture in the mountains of Colorado since 1991. Over the years, he gained a broad range of architectural experience from working at various firms in the area. In 2010 he formed dk architects, to guide clients through the design and building process with an emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability. As a guide, he listens closely to clients' needs, desires, and budget and balances those requirements with the opportunities and constraints offered by each site. > Saw a project in a magazine that I thought Kevin had designed. Was hoping that he would bring a high level of creativity to solve a certain set of design problems within my budget. I was very disappointed and ended up basically doing the layout and even switching things with the builder to make the spaces more functional and aesthetically pleasing. I had to track him down more than once to return my calls and emails. Not responsive enough on a timely basis.

> DK was wonderful to work with on our new home project. They provided great insight and came up with fantastic ideas that greatly improved our project, not just in form, but especially in function where we were focused on this project. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for an architect for design work!

> We have worked with Kevin Heath of dk architects on several custom residential projects over the past 15 years. Kevin is a committed design professional who consistently provides a high level of innovation and exceptional service. Kevin's solution oriented approach and attention to detail promotes a superior quality result and a pleasant process.

> DK Architects developed home plans for me during late 2012 and early 2013. The home plans were for a joint home to be built for two families to share. I was impressed with how Kevin could listen to the four different voices and come up with plans that filled all of our needs. He tirelessly drew and redrew as we honed in our ideals and helped us to make sense of what we really wanted and needed. He helped us make true sense of what was possible and lead us to make great decisions regarding our options.

> Thank you for your kind words. It was fun developing the design for the house.

> Kevin has been the lead architect on two of my projects. His scope has included design of structure, building details, cabinet design and review, window/door design and review, weekly meetings with notes, and general construction administration. He is excellent in meetings with owners , and is thorough and timely in his follow up. He is quick to come up with solutions for problems that come up in custom construction, and flexible in his solutions. I would recommend dk for any large or small project.

> We have been very pleased with dk architects. Kevin has shown great attention to detail and he has always provided us with multiple options for the challenges of our project. His ideas are creative and more importantly Kevin is always able to explain complicated concepts to us in a manner we can understand. His relationship with the building department has made our project a much easier task. Kevin takes immense pride in his work and it shows. We love the personalized service. We look forward to working with dk architects again in the near future. It's been a pleasure working with Kevin and dk architects, thank you.

> Kevin made the process of designing a home such a great experience. We were overwhelmed and didn't really know where to start but he guided us through the whole process. He listened to what we wanted and also gave us suggestions for new ways at looking at things. Since it is a vacation home and shared with another family there were different issues than a typical single-family home build. He really understood our need for private spaces balanced with gathering areas for everyone to come together. We loved working with dk architects.!

> Kevin Heath of DK architects was the primary architect on building our house in Aspen. It was a challenging project given that the site was positioned on the side of the mountain. Kevin always had creative ideas and solutions to the issues that arrose. He was fun and easy to work with, he was available and worked well with our general contractor. He worked quickly and was on time. He followed through to make sure everything was done correctly to the end of the project. I was lucky to have found Kevin Heath of DK architects among so many architects in Aspen. I would highly recommend DK architects to any person building a house or doing a detailed remodel of their existing home.

> Thank you for the review. It was a rewarding project with a great outcome.

> Kevin was highly professional and did a comprehensive and creative job of designing a total "gut" remodel of our condo. He was very responsive to our requests and suggestions, and was a joy to work with.
>
> He set up a bidding/selection process to help us select a contractor. He worked closely with our decorator and all the sub-contractors.
>
> We feel Kevin did a lot of work for us for a very reasonable fee. He was often on site to check the progress of the job. We are delighted with the finished project.

**★★★★★ — User, July 2013**

> Kevin Heath at dk architects did the plans for our addition, which included a 3 car garage, master suite, exercise room and spare bedroom and bath. Kevin took the time to discuss with us the way we wanted to use each space. Throughout the planning/design process he challenged us and discussed the pros and cons of different design ideas for the rooms. We also chose all the fixtures and finishes in this step. As a result our plans were very complete. All the contractors we interviewed were very impressed with the quality and completeness of the plan set. This also allowed the build phase to go much smoother. You (as a homeowner) are not always going to be on-site when a contractor or sub has a question about something-for us we just said 'What do the plans say!' We give dk architects our highest recommendation!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Hello,** *(in Photo Questions)*

Love the Vanity, where may I find one like that?

Thanks

A: Hi, the owners had found that piece of furniture in their travels. The contractor then added the top and installed the plumbing.

**Q: Should faucets and knobs in bathroom and kitchen match** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are building a new home and I'm wondering if the faucets and knobs (oil rubbed bronze) need to be the same throughout the entire house.

A: Yes I believe the door handles, cabinet pulls, bath accessories should match throughout the house. The baths are small spaces and multiple finishes are too busy. The exception to this would be the kitchen. You could change the material there.

**Q: rain fed stream under basement** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Sometime after this house was built in the 70s, an underground stream moved/formed under the walk-out basement slab. It is at an uphill corner. The previous owner had the slab jackhammered and installed a sump pump.
We've been in the house 18mths and this winter the stream seems to have changed course. The sump pump still works steadily when it rains, but we developed new signs of moisture in the drywall of the bedroom closest to the sump pump.
We've removed the drywall and discovered the base wood and some of the studs have rotted. A week ago the wood was dry, but today, after a steady overnight rain, some spots are as wet and mushy as a kitchen sponge.

We know we need to remove the rotted wood and drywall, then deal with moisture seeping through concrete wall blocks.

My questions are:
1\. what else do we need to watch for?

2\. Will the underground stream compromise the 6" thick slab?
3\. Do we need to save up to install a second sump pump in the basement?
Photos:
First sign we had a problem. The mold wasn't visible until I pulled the crack open so I could patch and paint. The damaged wallboard was clean in January with no cracks, before snow melt.
Next after removing wallboard.

and last, the slab around the sump pump

A: Look up Building Science Corporation. Joseph Lstiburek

He wrote the book on fixing problems.

**Q: I Love the comforter and sheets and pillows, Do you sell these here? I** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love this look, wondering if you sell the comforter set ?

A: Hi, i'm sorry we do not sell the comforter. http://www.houzz.com/pro/michellepaulinedesign/michelle-pauline-design was the interior design she may be able to help you.

**Q: Cabinet color** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have sea pearl countertops and are looking for a grey color that is not to dark for the cabinets. We would like to use brass knobs. Any ideas?

A: Beautiful slab. I was wondering what the flooring was and the walls, so to get an idea of the whole palette. I would urge you to consider something other than brass knobs. Nickel or a black hardware. Look at a warm gray depending on the other colors in the room and slab. I chose these from Sherwin Williams. Requisite Gray SW 7023, or Proper Gray SW \#6003. What about a white or black cabinet to contrast with the counter top?

**Q: is the bed custom made?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Michelle Pauline is the interior designer. She is now on Houzz and can be found at http://www.houzz.com/pro/michellepaulinedesign/michelle-pauline-design
