We were referred to Lewis Carpet to purchase new carpet. Our sales rep Oxana was very knowledgeable, helpful, efficient, and very pleasant. The carpet was installed in May 2019. Two months later in July, water flooded our basement and soaked a large area of the carpet. We paid our contractor to remove it and dry it out immediately. The pad was ruined and discarded and it remains to be seen if the carpet that was flooded is able to be salvaged and reinstalled with a new pad. After removal we were able to see the tack strip in one area was severely molded and partially disintegrated. We had several people evaluate it- our general contractor, three project managers and four plumbers from two separate companies. Every one of them confirmed it takes years for the strip to become molded in this fashion, and it was positively black with mold and crumbling when the carpet was installed. To investigate, we removed the drywall in the area to find large voids where the concrete wall does not meet the foundation (completed in 1998). So this flooding has been a recurrent problem for years that we would have addressed before installing new carpet. Pictures are attached. > Not only should Lewis have informed us that there was existing mold under the old carpet, they should have never reused an existing tack strip in that condition. We contacted Lewis Carpet immediately after seeing the existing mold. Jake, who apparently handles the installations told us their installers (which are separate contractors) know to never to put in a carpet pad or carpet when they discover mold. After no further contact by Lewis to show any concern whatsoever, we then emailed Jake in November with pictures and confirmation from all the contractors. Sharon was the Lewis rep who responded for me to call her. That phone conversation was far from pleasant as she insisted that her installers would never install carpet over a moldy tack strip, and they would have stopped and cancelled the installation. Sharon was extremely rude and insulting. Our contractors advised us to insist that the carpet, pad and strip should all be brand new, replaced by Lewis. Yet all we asked for was to place a new tack strip and pad, and we would not mind salvaging the flooded carpet if possible. > If the Lewis Carpet installer would have told us there was mold, it would have saved much time, aggravation, and several thousand dollars. After the new carpet was removed, we had to open the concrete floor and install drain tiles and patch the concrete wall. All of this would have been done in May rather than November, and our move in date would not have been delayed 6 months. It is almost a year since the installation, and we still do not have carpet in the area. They clearly installed brand new carpet and pad over a moldy tack strip. We would recommend a company who is professional, courteous, proud of their work, and has a concern for their customers- not Lewis Carpet. **★ — Glenbrook Remodeling, Oct. 2019** > As a home remodeling professional I worked with many tile vendors, I am almost left speechless in the manner through which Lewis Floor & Home has failed to stand behind the "high-end" product that they sell. > On their invoice it states "NO RETURNS" for the sole reason they know you are over paying for a product that is so poorly made and so horribly painful to work with that you will be demanding your money back upon opening the first box of tiles. > My advice to any fellow contractor, designer, design studio, or homeowner...be aware of their inability to take full ownership of the product that they sell. When I saw what their design district had to offer, I told my client that since material is shipped from the manufacturer anyway, shopping at Lewis Floor & Home, which I have used many times, would be better because they had a far greater selection. We also could take our time and not have to rush decisions. > As it turned out, with the help of Oxana, a tireless and detailed oriented designer specifier there, we made our selections to have shipped there. > Her follow up, making sure product was shipped to Arizona when scheduled which included about 45% from Lewis' own stock was invaluable. During installation we needed extra tile due to other people's error. Oxana was able to find the same dye lot and get it shipped that week. Remove carpet and install new hardwoods to match the rest of the first floor, refinish and stain all - Great Job, Tile bathroom floor - Perfect! Kitchen, full set of upper and lower cabinets, including a bar and island - close to DISASTROUS! I ordered the cabinets in May for an August job - I am a planner. They mis-measured on cabinet height, absolutely zero trim was ordered or delivered, wrong inside finish, even the glass for the cabinet doors was wrong. The whole experience was horrible, but I have to say that the kitchen planner quit the week I ordered cabinets (but I did not know this) so it basically fell apart. Took well over a month to get replacements in Sept & Oct and all the missing pieces, so the job could not be be finished. While Lewis Floor and Home I believe tried to fix the mess, I would stick with a true Kitchen shop, they are just NOT committed or qualified enough to be the kitchen business, 1 employee in that dept.. Either do it and do it well, like you do all flooring, or get out of the kitchen business. When you go there for flooring - ask for ANNA K - she is absolutely the BEST there is! Thank God I used my own Kitchen contractor, otherwise I'd still be waiting. Great place for anything flooring related - this they do very well. A: This is an all natural stone, specifically Crema Marfil Marble. **Q: Fireplace Remodeling Mess!!** *(in Design Dilemma)* I got a little over eager - I removed the old wooden mantel surround and brick hearth and now have to stare at this mess every day!! Help! I'd like a clean, sleek look but am not good at visualizing the end result of a project. Any ideas are welcome! :-) A: Today you can do so much with ceramic, natural stone or porcelain tile. With the right tile setter, you can tile over the existing brick face and hearth (floor in front of fireplace opening). Design with tile that offers a bit of mid century vibe and now the focal point is stylish and sets the right tone for your dining table and chairs. Consider a classic white stone subway tile in a brick pattern, or a mosaic pattern like a hexagon or herringbone. Ceramic is less expensive and doesn't need to be sealed.
