> I initially contacted Norm Walters for a very small project that only included switching out the cabinet and countertop in my master bathroom. I could not find a contractor that would take such a small project. Then I found Norm on a website. He impressed me with his professionalism. He was ontime for the intial meeting. He provided a quote with the level of detail I was looking for. I have been using him for projects ever since. He completed that first project and all others since, on time and within budget. That is important to me. I know other contractors come in with a low bid and then upcharge for anything that comes along that they didn't think of. Norm thinks of everything. His quotes are in great detail with a timeline of what to expect to happen and when. Since that initial time, I had a few little things around the house that needed to be fixed. Norm replaced a utility sink in my laundry room, he fixed a cracked tile in my shower. What I'm trying to say is, no project is too small. Then came the big project. I wanted to remodel my master bathroom, guest bathroom and laundry room, all at the same time. This included retiling the shower, removing wallpaper, texturizing and painting the walls, changing out the tub, adding new toilets, cabinets, countertops, ceiling fans, lighting and giving life to an old mirror by framing it out. I am so pleased with all of these updates, but mostly I have the peace of mind that my shower is now water tight and all plumbing and electrical work was done to code and inspected. These things might not be important to everyone, but after living with questionable builder-grade installations, it's very important to me. I will use Norm for any future project, big or small and I always recommend him to friends and family.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Construction sequencing** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm trying to figure out the order of how to do rest of our renovation project. Here is basic list of the major components that still need to be completed. There are a few other things like install lights, replace switches, etc. However, none of those things are in the "critical path" of the project so they can be completed whenever we have free time or find the fixture.
I'm not concerned about the level of the tile /appliance/countertop. The tile currently runs under the appliances and will continue to do so. I don't anticipate a huge change in the height so we shouldn't have any issues.  We will be using granite or soapstone for the countertop. 
As mentioned in one of the responses below, the cabinets are in good condition. The only problem is that the finish needs updating.  The thing I need help on is the order that I should complete the tasks. 
Please feel free to give you input on the order of completion for the tasks below:
Demo tile floor
Demo existing countertop and backsplash
Paint kitchen cabinets
Install new flooring- tile
replace baseboards
Install new countertop
Install new backsplash

A: As mentioned earlier the cabinets will need to be leveled for any type of countertop. Laminate countertops will conform to unlevel cabinets, any hard surface will not. The countertop folks will simply shim their countertop level leaving unsightly gaps, because cabinetry leveling is not in their job description.  Once you put new countertops on old cabinets using hard surfaces such as granite or quartz. you are stuck with those cabinets forever as no one will remove those countertops and attempt to install them over new cabinets due to the chance of them breaking.

Debating on installing travertine 12x24 tiles but everyone tells me too much maintenance 
Our home is rustic and love the natural stone look

Is travertine more work than porcelain

**Q: need flooring help!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My husband and I just purchased this home. It currently has a bit of a Tuscan look, and we will be renovating it to fit our more Transitional style. We actually also love some modern farmhouse looks, and industrial modern, but the front of the home is more traditional so we were thinking a transitional look would be best. Anyway, we are not fans of the tile that is here. We love grays or greige walls and this cream tone just won't work. We also plan to renovate the kitchen, with white cabinets and possibly marble backsplash, etc.
We need help with ideas for the floors. We are nervous to use wood as we have a dog and two rowdy little boys, there is also a pool off the back where kids could track in water. AND, my husband is not a fan of the wood look tiles. He's a woodworker and has a hard time dealing with fake wood. lol. I'd love any and all suggestions for a durable but chic flooring option.

**Q: Small Master Bath Remodel** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are looking to remodel our small (not quite 5' x 8') master bathroom which originally only had a toilet and vanity. My husband removed the toilet due to leaking several years ago, and we would like to add a curbless shower, wall mount vanity and wall mount toilet with washlet. We had 3 contractors in to give us job estimates but were told they could/would not do the curbless shower due to room size and inability to guarantee against leakage. Are these valid concerns or have we just not found the best experienced contractors for the job. We are seniors on a fixed income and don't have a huge budget, just a dream of a beautiful bath we can "age in". Any suggestions for finding a contractor or advice for DIY?

A: They make curbless shower pans that are fiberglass one piece units, I would search those.

**Q: Bathroom cabinets** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are redoing the kids jack and Jill bathroom. We have cabinets but need a counter top for 72' cabinets. Any advice where to find them premade or do we need to have custom order?

A: One good reason to have a fabricator make a countertop out of remnants for you is that not many walls are square. What ends up happening is the counter will not fit correctly, leaving an unslightly gap at one end or the other. The sink(s) also may not be centered on the sink base cabinets either.
