Wow, what a journey it was! We started out with a vague idea of what we wanted and through the expertise and experience embodied in the staff at Nick Weitzer Company it culminated into an outstanding refresh of the entire main floor of our 30-year old home. Nobody, and I mean nobody, can believe the difference this remodel has made in our main living space. Not one day goes by that we do not comment on how wonderful it is to live in this ‘new’ home. The job was complicated. the bathroom had to be redesigned, boiler moved, steps moved and more. In other words it was a big, complicated by the fact that as I writer I needed to work. Nick and his staff started from scratch and redesigned the space in a way that we never imagined. We set up a day for the work to begin and an estimated time when it would be over. Not only did the folks they hired show up on time, but they were all real craftsman, the most pleasant of people who took pride in their work. All we did was leave a few boxes of doughnuts every day. The project was well-supervised; they were constantly concerned about our comfort, open to new ideas. When changes had to be made, they were explained to us, and in some case designs were improved from how they were originally drawn up. I had an idea to use space under the steps as a closet, and they said sure. They were constantly thinking about how to make things work better, and they did. When they were done, they came through with little bits of blue tape to mark spots that we would never have noticed but that they saw and which needed a little attention. It's been two years; the work has held up splendidly (and was on budget, by the way). Our house is comfortable in ways we had never imagined, thanks to Nick, his staff and his contractors. The fellow he hired to oversee the project was there every day. Any question we had, he answered thoughtfully and always with consideration for what we needed. This is Sherwin Williams SW 6867 Fireworks. We loved the way it looked against the slate flooring and VG Fir. **Q: Kitchen Advice? Cosmetic updates to make dated kitchen more modern?** *(in Design Dilemma)* The house is 1931 Spanish Revival but we are looking to make the kitchen as modern and bright as we can on a limited budget. Kitchen is generally in great shape. Just needs cosmetic updates. Planning to repaint the cabinets (white?), remove the "notched" cabinet detailing if possible, and change the hardware/drawer pulls. ANY ADVICE ON THE BACKSPLASH? OR ANY OTHER TIPS TO MAKE THE KITCHEN MORE MODERN AND FABULOUS? A: I know there is some debate about subway tile here and I have to weigh in. Some say it's dated, but I think it's having quite a revival. Clients are asking for it more and more in bathrooms and kitchens. Glass subway tile is also getting a lot of attention. It doesn't need to be plain white, you can play a lot with color. Accent bands add a bit of drama as well. I'm not saying it's the only choice for you, but I think it would look spectacular in your kitchen, whether you decide to paint your cabinets or not.
