Trying to avoid a redo. Thank you A: I will agree that it is poorly done.. I disagree with the level of deference to the tile setter. Subs don't run the job and when they do - that's the work you get. We don't know if there was a trim carpenter onsite but if there was popping that apron and notching the casing could easily have been done while he waited. Literally 10 minutes worth of work and it would be done by the time the tile setter was done setting up his saw. More importantly why didn't the tile setter communicate what he needed before he came onsite ? "This is what I need before I can come on the job to install the backsplash." If he can't communicate or he choses not to it is not my problem if has to wait once he's on the job that's on him. And if that work is acceptable to him you don't want him on your job anyway. On our jobs we say it all has to get done. And the guys and the crews that get the repeat work, and the price they want, work together to get it done. We do not allow for a culture of prima donnas. **Q: Staircase problem** *(in Building a Home)* I'm building a home with a spiral staircase. The builder placed the windows too low and now the trim is running into the false stringer. It's not something I noticed until the trim was being placed. The builder had recommend taking out the stringer, or notching each step to look the same, or painting them the same color. The original plan was to stain the stringer and paint the trim, but now I feel as if it's not going to look correct with a white trim notching into a stained piece of wood. It has caused me so much angst and I'm so upset over the result. Am I overreacting? Should this be a cosmetic concern? Any way of fixing this? A: @Mark Bischak, that's a great house. I've stolen that window a few times ! **Q: fixing sloped ceiling crown molding disaster** *(in Remodeling)* Full kitchen gut and remodel. GC went ahead and put up crown without telling me about slope in ceiling. It looks awful. They say nothing can be done, nor could have been done to fix it, so they just went ahead and put it up. I need to find a solution. Cant live with it crooked. It’s an older home and we’ve had to fix lots of problems as they arose. Which I’m totally agreeable too in order to have a good result. I did not go “cheap” on this remodel. Don’t know why they didn’t come to me with this problem as they had done with other problems. Anyway, any suggestions on fixing a sloped ceiling so that I have straight crown molding? A: There are two fixes I see at this point: Hold the crown down so that it reads closer to level which will result in a gap at the ceiling and then "float" the ceiling with compound. In concert with this you can also likely back plane the crown to help "bend it" and that will help. You will likely still see it but it'll be an improvement. It is a known technique to address this issue. Your guy should know how to do it. Second option - rip it out - rip out the sheetrock and shoot the ceiling joists with a laser and level it. Sounds extreme and it is at this point but it's also your house and you should be happy. Now, I completely disagree with everyone that's saying its an old house and its a remodel. It's relatively easy to get this right if you are paying attention. It always comes down to time, price, and/or quality. As the saying goes pick two. As you are the client, you set the tone. And if the tone you set is speed or price then this is not an atypical outcome. If the tone you set is quality then frankly your GC should have shot the ceiling with a laser before he rocked and hung the cans and got a sense for how much he was out. Then told you, perhaps showed you with the laser and provided a price for leveling it down. Then you own the decision. Frankly, that's our standard operating procedure - primarily because you hired our firm and we do it once and we do it right. but also because I don't want the call and I certainly don't want you unhappy. But there are levels of contractors and it also assumes that you have sent the signals that you care about quality. If you are at them to finish and they are relatively on schedule then you are culpable as you set the tone. Is he on a bid and did you go low or push for him to catch the low bid ? Do you want it right or do you want it right now ? But if you were all about quality and paying a fair wage then it's all on him. You have to decide what you can live with it and where you are budget wise. I'd have to see the rest of the kitchen to make the determination as to the preferred course of action. But as we like to say Do it Right and Do It Once so I think you should talk with GC and come to some arrangement to at least try to remediate the problem. Heck, it's right in the kitchen and the job has his name on it. And don't be cutting any checks until you have the conversation. **Q: Soapstone vs Honed Granite vs. Leathered Granite** *(in Design Dilemma)* We have been doing a lot of research on countertops and are stuck. We loved the soapstone look but now are thinking it's a bad choice because of the upkeep. We saw Honed Black Mist Granite and really liked it since it looked like soapstone. Now wondering if honed holds up well. Also, does anyone ever use honed or leathered light granite? We're looking for a white granite for the island. So confusing! A: Our client selected hone granite for this kitchen renovation. They were leaning toward soapstone but when they realized they could get the "look" with honed granite, I think that convinced them to go in that direction. They have been very happy and it is pretty much a maintenance free surface. **Q: How tall should my baseboards be in my new build?** *(in Design Dilemma)* My builder gave me a couple choices of baseboard heights to choose from. I can't remember the exact demensions but the "medium" was about 4 1/2 inch high and the "tall" was about 5 3/4" high. I picked the tall ones but now I'm worried I made the wrong choice since my ceilings are only 8 feet tall. Should I go down to "medium"? A: Traditional house with eight foot ceilings i would recommend the 5 3/4 baseboard, a 4 1/2 wide casing with a minimum depth of at least 5/4. Hard to say about crown in the vaulted spaces, and I don't know if you are crowning bedrooms. If so, I like a one piece crown with a projection of about 3 1/2". If you get the chance buy the book Get Your House Right - its' a great resource. **Q: Need to choose a stain by tomorrow for red oak floors!!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We had someone put in solid red oak flooring, and I'm having a hard time deciding on a stain. I am liking the bottom two better, the second from the bottom is Minwax Provincial and the last one is Duraseal Medium brown. Is there a difference in the durability or anything else with Minwax vs Duraseal? Thanks!! A: I wanted to second Al Fortunato's comments about not selecting the finish color without seeing a "finished" product. Very hard to gauge stain without the lustre of a finish. That is why I originally asked about the samples on the installed floor. It has always been our practice to make samples from left-over flooring including the the appropriate number of finish coats. We also have a preference for an oil vs. a polyurethane finish, for a variety of reasons, one of which is our ability to control the lustre of the finished floor.
