## About

### Houzz Badges

- 25,000 Ideabook Saves

Realizing the convergence of craft, design and the arts, NEW THEME seeks to redefine the boundaries of the architectural field and of the broader applications of design and construction. Founded in 2005 originally as an architectural firm that pioneered sustainability, NEW THEME has since grown to encompass a full-service design studio that synthesizes European and American architectural practices through our furniture, production work and the fine arts. We take inspiration in the legacy of Southern Californian modernism—both in art and architecture—and seek to unify our vision with current and emergent creative practices. Through this integrated approach, NEW THEME stands to foster a ongoing dialogue about the necessity to live, work and create in spaces that ultimately unify the individual with their collective environment.

  - Location: Not specified

  - Description: The Venice-based digital ad agency Whirled required a selection of built-in office furniture as part of their new office in Venice, CA. Using woods that complemented the clean, simple minimalism of the interior, NEW THEME constructed a selection of pieces that fit within the narrow, tall structure. White oak, walnut and reclaimed Douglas Fir were chosen as the materials for the nine custom-built pieces, consisting of conference tables, wall-mounted storage shelves and workstations. As a collecti…

  - Location: Not specified

  - Description: Designed by Beth Holden while she was an associate at Barton Myers Assoc., Inc., and completed by Ms. Holden when she began Construction Under A NEW THEME Inc. The program called for an addition of a master bedroom, master bath and carport for a graphic designer. The existing Venice bungalow was left as is, with the strategy to create a low-cost, flexible loft addition. The addition is connected by a sky-lit breezeway that leads to the master suite, which combines programmatic functions of bedro…
- [Hayvenhurst Folie](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/hayvenhurst-folie-pj-vj~328153)
  - Location: Encino, CA, CA
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: Originally contracted to restore a family's mid-century home in Encino, California, NEW THEME was brought on to develop an inspirational and unique structure for the children's playhouse. The house was inspired by the concept of a folie, which, amongst its many meanings, also refers to a small structure popular in France for recreational purposes. By naming it the "Hayvenhurst Folie", it signifies an escape from both the main house and the street on which it is located. In order to create a dial…
- [Green Greenberg Green House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/green-greenberg-green-house-pj-vj~324598)
  - Location: Los Angeles, CA
  - Photos: 18
  - Description: The design for this two-story house emerged from the site constraints, program and view. The shape and orientation is designed for maximum exposure to the prevailing winds at strategic locations, which facilitate the building's ability to use natural ventilation. The form of the building gently fits a large program onto the awkwardly-shaped site by using the site's unusual form: shifts and movements of the site are used to enhance daylight and natural air flow distribution. Reacting to the physi…
- [Hillside House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/hillside-house-pj-vj~328198)
  - Location: Los Angeles, CA
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: A renovation of a two-story house with a beautiful view of Los Angeles. The existing house had turned its back to the outside, alienating the interior from the exterior. NEW THEME first opened up the house to the existing deck in order to engage the house towards the vista. Through replacing the small wood doors and enclosed deck with Fleetwood aluminum sliders and a new glass rail, the house embraces life as it was meant to be lived in Southern California. The multi-directional sliders offer ma…
- [Lautner House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/lautner-house-pj-vj~324567)
  - Location: Los Angeles, CA
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: The restoration of this mid-century John Lautner home included a reconsideration of living spaces and bedroom areas, which led to the fabrication of unique furniture pieces and installations that brought back the distinctiveness of the home’s original architecture. Interior spaces were reduced to an essential palette of white and wooden tones, emphasizing both light and transparency in a home that looks out upon Studio City and further out to the San Gabriel Mountains. The furniture built by NEW…
- [Hayvenhurst Restoration](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/hayvenhurst-restoration-pj-vj~324504)
  - Location: Encino, CA
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: NEW THEME was contracted to completely renovate the interior of a classic mid-century home on Hayvenhurst Avenue in Encino, CA. The house had been altered since its original construction, and it was necessary to remove and renovate various elements to restore the authenticity of the home's mid-century appeal. An installed hardwood floor was removed and replaced with a specialty white concrete. The bathrooms and kitchen were also redesigned and modernized as part of a careful restoration process…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Plywood walls?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Wouldn't you want a more durable material for the walls and flooring? Seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

A: This is actually a combination of solid Douglas fir and plywood, both are exterior grade and actually durable. This structure is guaranteed to last for decades!

**Q: Materials and approx cost** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi, this is similar to what I want to build in backyard, simple but elegant and able to sit "outside" all year long by adding a fan and a corner fireplace. I wondered what the cost was for this and the type of material chosen on walls and roof?

A: The budget was quite affordable, all the buildings we design are not only for the most exclusive tastes. The walls are Douglas fir and plywood, both exterior grade. The roof is a wood structure with a basic waterproofing membrane. Feel free to contact us to inquire further.

**Q: What is the floor made from? Terrazzo? Cement?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This is a glossy, high-quality white concrete.

**Q: I'd love to know if this coffee table is commercially available?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This was sourced by the client, it is a mid-century vintage piece, but we would be happy to produce a similar item custom from our North Hollywood shop. Feel free to contact us with your request.

**Q: Fireplace surround** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is it and where can I purchase it?

A: Feel free to contact us regarding this project, many elements involved in the bathroom are custom built.

**Q: Abdulla** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love your design, do you work also overseas ?

A: Of course! We would be happy to provide design consulting for overseas projects.
