Both projects have gone extremely well. First was a kitchen and bath remodel with new countertops and sinks two years ago. This year we had new carpet put in our first floor and stairs. What I love about them is they do what they say they will. Both projects were completed in the exact timeframe they said. The workers who came were diligent and very proficient. They cleaned up after themselves. Pricing was very competitive. On our kitchen/bath remodel they were less expensive than two other quotes. They were able to install the sink I wanted—which the two other quotes said wasn’t possible. The carpet price was exactly in line with two other quotes—but their price for moving furniture was much better. Therre was a lack of attention to detail. The grout used on a portion of the tile work was from a different manufacturer and was a different color than what was originally chosen. It is wise to not judge any home project until it is totally finished, as the process is messy and has many steps that most people are unaware of (and those aren't shown on HGTV). There are also misunderstandings I noted in your post, and I respond to or correct them here: > The delays in this project were mostly due to changes in the finalized products, changes in design/layout, etc, which were not under our control. All the other delays were not within our scope of work. Many times (some builders report most times) there are delay in construction. Yes, we had some scheduling issues on this project in the beginning, but please remember that we warranty our work for life, so we will only use skilled craftsmen, and not just anyone off the street. We need to finish the previous clients' projects to their satisfaction before we move to the next. Also remember that installers have families too, and need time off on the weekends, or even during the week to care for a sick child (which was the case in this project). The grout color was changed mid-install, which we accommodated for, but it was the same manufacturer. A slight hazing, efflorescence and color differences in grout can occur on curing grout, as it was not yet finished. We changed the color of the finished grout for you in the entry at no charge, after you decided that the grout chosen was too light. x It is our standard practice to leave all full tiles on-site for you to store for any later emergencies, but there may not have been any to leave, if there were more design changes midstream, in any particular room. Unsightly scraps are either disposed of by our installers for recycling, or by the builder as part of his "whole house clean." No mention was ever made to us to leave the cut scraps, or we would have happily done so for you. We are confident that we did professional, thorough and beautiful work on this project. Who makes the green tile?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: Kristine, your design in this bathroom is fantastic, and it was fun for us to do all the slab and tile work in this bathroom. It turned out beautifully. **Q: what kind of tile did you use?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: This is a copper 3x6 subway tile, which is actually a ceramic or porcelain underneath a real copper "shell" . **Q: Asbestos Tile? What did you do with yours?** *(in Design Dilemma)* There is asbestos tile in two rooms of our home over concrete slab. We are thinking of installing unfinished floating hardwood and staining it to match our existing hardwood when we refinish. Ideally we would have it removed. I hate the idea that it is in my home and I know it would be easier to carpet over it, but I want it out. We understand the process of testing it, either having a company do it or sending it out ourselves and testing not only the tile itself but the mastic. The next part of the process - has anyone in the houzz community ever removed it themselves or hired to have it done? What was your experience? What did you learn in the process? How much did it cost? How did you find the company you hired? A: You should have it tested first to be sure there is asbestos present. Get a quote to remove it, then weigh your options. Just having it in your home is not usually a hazard, and its usually the "cut back" glue that was used and not always the tile that has the asbestos. When its disturbed by removing, sanding, etc. is when the problem is created. Disturbing it creates particles to be released into the air, and it gets on shoes, clothing, is breathed in, tracked everywhere. If you remove it, you hire an abatement company accredited for this specialized work!! Do NOT do this yourself, and do NOT not hire a handyman or other non-certified company to do this! If you do not want to incur the cost of removing it, and it wont cause height issues with the abutting flooring and doors, have your contractor "encapsulate" the old flooring by skim coating or doing a shallow pour over it with a self leveler (we use "Feather Finish") before installing the new flooring. You will need to disclose when selling that there is asbestos in the encapsulated flooring, which may be a turn off for some buys who are uninformed about the process.
