“As a family and company, Nanke Signature Group has an obligation to uphold the reputation we’ve earned today by providing outstanding customer service and delivering a superior product for our clients, maintaining the highest standards of morals and integrity that encompass the values of what is more than just our business, but furthermore, our passion.”

Nanke Signature Group, a family-owned and -operated company, has crafted superior, custom homes for 70 years. The tradition all began in Sedona, Arizona, where General Contractor Don Nanke, along with his brother-in-law and renowned mid-century modern architect Howard Madole, developed a precedent for the city’s home building industry. Their creative legacy inspired others, and as young teenagers, Don’s sons, John and Todd Nanke, started working in construction under their father and Uncle Howard, learning every facet of the building industry from masonry to finish carpentry and design. Today, John, Nanke Signature Group Owner and General Contractor, and Todd, its Chief Architectural Designer, carry on Don and Howard’s legacy, upholding the reputation of an elite, custom luxury home building partnership that can accomplish the otherwise deemed impossible.

In 2014, John’s son, Jared Nanke, became the fourth generation of Nanke Signature Group, ushering a fresh perspective to an already diverse and creative team as its Creative Director. Acquiring partial ownership in 2015, it’s been Jared’s greatest ambition to grow and diversify the company to better serve and care for the needs of their admired and respected clientele.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Does stain go with flooring?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I’m struggling to decide if these pair well. I feel pretty confident they do but a small part of me is doubting my judgement.

A: It looks like the stain you've chosen has more red undertones than the flooring example. Try something with more of a blue hue to blend them better!

**Q: what size bathroom mirror??** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are remodeling our kids bathroom. We will be putting in a 72 in vanity.
What size mirrors would be appropriate? I’m open to a large single mirror or 2 separate mirrors but not sure what sizes I should be looking for.

A: Do you have wall sconces? That will play a big part in determining the size. If you do have them I would suggest having two smaller mirrors somewhere between 24" and 32"
If you don't you could do up to a 64" large mirror, but this style is a little more dated.
Good luck with your project!

**Q: Before & After Timber Frame Mailbox** *(in Woodworking)*

When we bought our home one of the many things that needed improvement was the mailbox. Other projects took priority, but finally we were able to replace it! Ben, my fiance, and his dad built the new mailbox out of cedar without using hardware to assemble the post. Instead of staining, we opted for a few coats of boiled linseed oil and we love the way it turned out!

A: Such a good simple update!

**Q: Should an area rug for a living room extend in front of patio door?** *(in Home Decorating)*

My living room/great room is 16xw by 10'. \`One one side of the 16' wall is a double patio door, about 7'. The rest of that wall (9 ft) has a fireplace/bookshelves. The floor space in front of the patio door is essentially functions as traffic lane, leading to the back patio. The living room furniture is arranged in the area in front of the fireplace, with an area rug that is sized to stay within that 9' wide area. However I would really to expand the living room function of the room - place a chair in the floor space leading to the patio door. It would not interfere w access, be conversation -proximate to the other furniture pieces (and have great views out the patio door). BUT.... 2 questions:
1\. would I need a larger area rug to tie the room and the furniture together, not have the chair just hanging out by itself? If so, the rug would extend in the floor space across the patio door, meaning traffic would cross the rug to use the patio. . I use the back patio quite a bit, but I live alone so not a lot of traffic.
2\. Or Would it look absurd if I kept the current area run, and got as maller rug -(4x6) the exact same pattern as the current area rug - and placed it under the chair - would that tie the room together?

Thanks for your thoughts - I am new to this design process, have a hard time picturing it.

A: Hi Kristi,
I would suggest that you keep your current rug and not adding another one to the chair. As long as you set it in a way that is open to the other furniture pieces it should be fine on its own.
Leaving the space in front of the patio doors just makes more sense from a functional standpoint.
Good luck with your project!

**Q: am I making a mistake on quartz?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I wanted a natural stone for my kitchen countertops because it just has a more natural feel to it, and has a good "energy" about it.... I don't like granite because it's usually too speckled, and we wanted white or off white/slightly grey with very small veining.... Anyway, I looked at many slabs of natural stones, mostly quartzite and some marble.... Although I saw some really beautiful stones, none of them really felt right for our kitchen space, plus they were a couple of thousands more that our budget. I decided on quartz Eternal Statuario, by Silestone. it's mostly white with faint grayish veining. The countertops company is coming to do a template on Friday, but now I'm having second thoughts! Am I going to hate it? Does quartz feel fake, like it's trying to be marble, but isn't? or am I going to love it because it has all the right colors we wanted for our kitchen and was within our budget?! (also, is quartz going out of style now?) would love to hear about your experience of how you feel about your quartz countertops.

A: Quartz does have its benefits over granite such as being less porous and it's basically a maintenance-free option as far as countertop materials go. If you love the finish and it's in your budget it seems like it would be silly to not choose quartz!

**Q: Before and After - Galley Kitchen 2020** *(in Home Decorating)*

We are a retired couple in the San Francisco Bay Area. We gutted our 1990 kitchen that had been somewhat updated 15 years ago, back to the sheetrock and started from scratch. After spending untold hours perusing Houzz for inspiration, I concluded I wanted a light and bright white kitchen with light granite counters and white or gray backsplash tile. I also wanted a French Country vibe, so I recovered the stools in a floral upholstery fabric and bought red, yellow, and floral mugs to coordinate. My husband and I designed, chose, and shopped for everything and our contractor made our dream kitchen a reality. We started with Kitchenmaid Cabinets from Home Depot and White Viscount Granite for the countertops. Here are Before and After photos.
Total cost for this renovation was approximately $60,000. Labor is very expensive here.

The oversized green granite peninsula was scaled back and we changed the look from breakfast bar to breakfast table giving the kitchen some French Country flair.

With leftover upholstery fabric, I made hanging kitchen towels. Amazingly, they can go in the washer and dryer.

We have a tea station on the left and a coffee/cookbook station on the right. We love them!

From Ivy Hill Tile via Wayfair we chose this 6" x 7" ceramic field tile called Vintage Lantern and the Vintage Florid Lantern. Elsewhere it is called Byzantine Arabesque tile.

We kept our herringbone-patterned hardwood floor, but bought a new 30" oven and moved it to under the cooktop.
By getting a counter-depth refrigerator and a smaller microwave, we were able to make our space feel visually larger and brighter.

Viscount White Granite

We bought the pendants from Wayfair. They are called Moris Single Bell Pendant, color Caribbean Blue. The paint on our kitchen walls is Kelly Moore Evening Mist. They match perfectly!
The wall with the apple plates is painted the gray that is in our connected family room.
There are many more photos and descriptions at my profile page under Projects.
