**★★★★★ — Howard Zolla, May 2025**

> I hired Richard to design a conversion of a low concrete wall in my backyard into a living wall. Richard selected the planting system, specified materials and gave me several choices of design.
>
> This posed a somewhat difficult problem since the area is rather shady. Richard produced high quality drawings and a complete listing of what was needed for the project. In this case, I chose to do the project myself. However, had I needed one, he recommended a contractor in my area to do the work.
>
> His design services were reasonably priced and I really like the look of the finished project.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Howard, thank you so much for the thoughtful review. Your honest and friendly communication made it a pleasure to work with you, especially on such a non-ordinary project that allowed creative expression. You cooperation all along the way with stating your preferences and furnishing photos and landscape architectural drawings added to the smoothness and ease of the project. All the best to you and your family with your unique, natural art piece (If I may be so indiscreet as to say so myself)

> Quality workmanship and excellent communication. Richard has a good understanding of City Codes and conformance with those requirements in the urban built environment. Our project consisted of raised planter boxes on the sidewalk and we have received so many compliments on the carpentry and design. Boone, the carpenter, was polite and his work was precise making the whole process seamless. Five Stars from us!

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Thank you for making the project go so smoothly, with your clear sketches, and supportive demeanor from beginning to end. Thank you for coming back to Mediterrasian after running into obstacles on your first attempt to make the exterior of your home more attractive. You were a pleasure to work with..

**★★★★★ — Gaithersburg GlassGleam, April 2024**

> The knowledge of the employees is unprecedented. They explained the full process with understandable instructions. They have taken my brown yard to a beautiful green in 2 years.

**★★★★★ — Teri Silvestri, Aug. 2023**

> "Many thanks for the gorgeous job you did in the backyard ...It looks like something you would see in an advertisement!!

**★★★★★ — Lily Wang, Aug. 2023**

> Very happy with Richard's design of a hybrid Asian/Bay Area drought tolerant backyard on a deep slope. He inspected the space twice, put in lots of thoughts and hours, designed a wonderful landscape with combinations of Asian and native elements. I can't wait to have it installed.

**★★★★★ — HU-836934895, Sept. 2022**

> We are so pleased and excited to have our new backyard, safe for the puppy, the children, and beautiful for us to look at and live in. We very much enjoyed working with Richard, finding him easily responsive and understanding of our needs, as well as creative with the limitations we set. I am happy tone able write about his work on these review pages and to recommend Mediterranean Landscapes to others in SF who are wanting to eliminate the lawn in their city yard because of the on-going drought..
> Oh, and Eric, who was the on-site project manager, and his helpers were very professional, with Eric especially joyful in his work and proud of the results. He was like an inspiration to the children who watched his care with keen eyes, and in the end proclaimed him a true craftsman! We are grateful to Richard for for sending him to us as well as for his beautiful and flexible design work.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> You were a pleasure and an inspiration to work with. We love to work with clients who encourage creativity and who inspire us to think outside the box and come up with something beyond the commonplace. You did both, and I think the result shows it.

**★★★★★ — Max, July 2022**

> Richard was polite and patient as we waffled on our materials and layout of our backyard. His renderings and photos of materials were invaluable. He was prompt with is emails and calls even though I think he was on vacation out of town. And he was sensitive to our cost constraints. Elliot, the solo worker, did the labor efficiently and left the site tidy. Both Richard and Elliot were professional and I would use them again if I had another yard.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Max, thank you so much for the friendly review you wrote. You were both a real pleasure to work with. From our first meeting, and my first look at your house and yard, I knew that this was going to be a fun project for good people. Also, thank you so much for the referral.

**★★★★★ — ryem, Feb. 2022**

> I reached out to Richard after reading their great reviews on Houzz and I'm so pleased that I did. With our non-traditional project, Richard was very easy to work with and went with the flow. He was collaborative and flexible as we figured out how to tackle our backyard. He fit us in quickly and his team did a great job completing the project. I will definitely be reaching out to Richard again for future projects.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> We are honored that you decided to reach out and work with us, and it was a pleasure from design stage all the way through to completion.

**★★★★★ — HU-285430690, Jan. 2022**

> Richard is a pleasure to work with. I have worked with him for two projects; a total landscape of our backyard, and more recently a landscape of our frontscape. The most recent project involved design of a frontscape driveway area that met the guidelines of the "Green Landscaping Ordinance" of San Francisco. There were specific guidelines we had to meet for design and permit submission to the city. Anytime you deal with the city to obtain permits there are challenges, but Richard's attention to detail made this project run smoothly. Once we had permits, Richards team (led by Erick) completed the work beautifully and in record time! I anticipated a long period where my driveway and garage would be unusable, but this time was surprisingly short! His efficiency made life much easier. I love my new pavers and planting beds! My house looks so beautiful now. Thanks to Richard and his team.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Thank you for letting us know. It was even more of a pleasure working with you this time on the front yard design and installation than it was on the backyard project, and that project was a delight in itself. We so appreciate the way you used your ingenuity to come up with ways to make everything go smoothly from beginning to end on both projects. It was also so nice the way you were always so good at getting people together, i.e. your wonderful group and the Mediterrasian craftspeople, in the logistics and the making of decisions that made the project a success. We wish you all the best for the new year and with the new landscaping.

**★★★★ — HU-636037473, May 2020**

> Mediterrasian Landscapes completed a beautiful update to our hardscaping, installed a small turf area, and helped to terrace our garden for easier access and more usable space in our sloped San Francisco backyard. We're very happy with the quality of work and the care that their team put into the project. It did take about twice as long to complete as they had originally predicted, but we did expect it would take longer and we're quite happy with the end result.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Thank you so much for the review and for the opportunity to facilitate the transformation of your backyard. We appreciate your candidness. The project did take longer than we had hoped. Your patience was stellar and it was just one of the things that we are so grateful about. We also really appreciated your creative design input, the way you kept up the dialogue with us all the way through the process, and guided us to fpcis in on the choices that would result in the right outcome for you.

**★★★★ — Scott Morse, May 2020**

> Mediterrasian Landscapes took on a job few others wanted to do. I had water leaking into my garage. I needed to have part of my Patio Courtyard which had a flooring of Mexican Tile removed and dug out down 18" into the underneath part which was rock and sand. And they had to do it professionally, by hand without machine digging. Then they had to check the walls which had stucco. The foreman knew enough about stucco to check for leaks and the reassemble the whole thing including making a rock slurry and a French Drain through the Courtyard Wall to the front planter. Everything required a finished look, which they accomplished. They also had to lay quite a lot of Mexican Tile in a way that protected the vertical surfaces in the proximity. This isn't easy work and it was in the immediate vicinity of the House where I lived. They did what they set out to do. They determined that it was not likely that this area was the source of my leaks but in case it was, finished it to prevent leakage into the Garage. It took a few more years to finally discover the major source of the leak into the Garage which was done by a plumbing company. Between the two contractors, I have no more leakage into my Garage, which is a major accomplishment for my home.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Thank you, Scott. We appreciate the review, as well as knowing the subsequent developments.

**★★★★★ — HU-915381405, May 2020**

> Mediterrasian was hired to do hard scaping of my backyard and do an entire new landscaping in the front of the house. They put in pavers and rocks, built large redwood planter boxes and planted a variety of different plants and a couple of smaller trees. They put in an irrigation system also. They were a joy to work with. I had asked for several changes as we went through the process and they always listened and met my requests or had helpful alternatives. They were on time while working and finished the project
> In a timely manner. I would give them my highest recommendation.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> How very sweet of you to write this lovely review! We very much enjoyed working with you. Hope all is well and that you and your loved ones are healthy.

**★★★★★ — Chris Chan, May 2020**

> Richard and Stephen of Mediterrasian Landscapes were fantastic to work with. They worked very close with us and aimed to understand our needs when it came to designing our backyard, what our vision was, and how we intended to use the space.
>
> Stephen and the labor crew were especially great. They brought a very solutions-oriented mindset and were proactive with offering alternatives and discussing potential trade offs. We highly recommend Mediterrasian as your next landscaping choice.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Chris, you and Cheryl were a great pleasure to work with. It was so enjoyable to meet you, to get to know you, your style and preferences, and to explore different permutations of the design until we landed on the one that suited you both and the site the best. Thank you for making our work so much fun and for topping it all off by writing such a great review. I also loved seeing how you topped off the transformation of your yard by adding your personal touches. We are grateful for the privilege of working with people like both of you.

**★★★★★ — Jane Kramer, June 2019**

> Outstanding. Look at the before and after 1 year photos. Mediterrasian did everything; terracing, retaining wall and planting. We told Richard that we neglect plants so he found beautiful plants that need minimal care. We did not have a drip-line installed. I water with a hose ~ twice a month in the summer and not ever in the winter. After one year, EVERY species of plants has done well. Stunning. As you can see, we need to paint the house a new color. LOL

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Jane, your review is thoughtful and humorous and it reminds me of how enjoyable it was to work with you and Michael on transforming your landscape. I still like the color of your house, but when you mentioned changing the color, I immediately thought of blue or an earthy reddish brown. You’ve done an excellent job of taking care of the plants. Have a lovely summer.

**★★★★★ — Danielle D, June 2019**

> I was very pleased with Richard and his crew. They were timely, respectful, communicative and do polished work. I would certainly hire them again.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Danielle, that is nice to hear. Working with you we had the opportunity to get to know you, your artistic style and unique preferences. We enjoyed getting to know you, and then getting to know your friends and relatives whom you referred to us. Thank you

**★★★★★ — Joan Bogart, June 2019**

> I had a master yard plan and sought Mediterrasian for a quote on doing just the concrete retaining walls in the plan. They ended up doing the whole yard! Specifically regarding the 3 concrete retaining walls I was impressed with how quickly they were able to begin excavating and hauling around dirt to begin grading and leveling out a sloped long yard. Then installing the wooden forms for the concrete foundation. I asked that they leave the wood imprints, which saved some labor cost of smoothening out the print lines. There is a minimal cost to tint and/or seal the concrete, both optional.
> Even though we found them through HomeAdvisor originally to obtain a quote to install a retaining wall I gave them an itemized list of work needed to execute a grand landscape plan all drawn out, with a budget that I thought would not be attainable. They matched my budget & provided recycling/upcycling solutions to save on labor& materials. They never pushed ideas out of our minds, and actually added great artistic touches to the final construction of a concrete seat in a rock retaining wall. They worked with haste each day making significant progress with a consistent team of 3 men each day to execute the plan. Highly Recommended! I have referred them many times - especially to people who have seen our yard from next door when they had an open house.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Joan Bogart, since you are an accomplished artist, printmaker, and art teacher in Santa Cruz, your review carries a lot of weight for us at Mediterrasian Landscapes. These words of praise coming from a person of your stature in the visual arts world are highly valued. Thank you for your generous and lavish support over the years. We deeply appreciate you.

**★★★★★ — Omar Kubian, March 2019**

> You will be more than happy with their work. They are truly craftsmen and artisans. And I've seen other projects they've done down my street and am amaized at the high end quality.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Omar, thank you for the kind words, I realize this is a late response, but I hope that makes it ok to borrow your words, and let you know we are more than happy with your finely crafted review. Thank you for your support of Mediterrasian Landscapes, and have a fantastic summer.

**★★★★★ — Marlyn Schmidt, March 2019**

> Review by M. S. in San Francisco, CA
> Project: Landscape Yard or Gardens
> Our small backyard had been desiccated by drought and neglect. Richard and his Mediterrasian Landscapes team brought it back to life. Ours was not a large project, but we felt we were getting full professional attention throughout the process. At the start, Richard listened to our wishes, and not only honored them, but enhanced them with his knowledge, experience and good taste. Elliott and Stephen followed through, executing the design plan with smooth expertise. It was a true pleasure working with Mediterrasian Landscapes. I would recommend them highly to anyone looking for an excellent outcome, executed professionally without drama or stress.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Hello Marilyn. Thank you so much for this lovely, well written review and for the opportunity that you provided to get to know you a bit and to assist with the remake of your courtyard. It was a pleasure working with you all the way through, and we have nothing but good feelings and positive memories of it.

**★★★★★ — Phil Olmsted, March 2019**

> Review by Phil O. in San Francisco, CA
> Project: Landscape Yard or Gardens
> Excellent work. Removed 4 old wooden retaining walls and some plant material and installed 4 cement block/fake stone face retaining walls (approx. 12.5 tons) in 5 days. I would use them again and would be happy to give a referral.

**Comment from Mediterrasian Landscapes:**

> Thank you so much for your kind review, I hope all is going well and that you and your loved ones are well. We appreciated the opportunity to work with you.
