RT Studio is a modern residential design firm based in North Bethesda, MD, serving homeowners across Montgomery County, Northern Virginia, and Washington DC.
We work exclusively in modern architecture. Not modern-inspired, not modern-adjacent — true Modernist design built around honest materials, exceptional light, and spaces designed around how your family actually lives.
Our work spans custom home additions, whole-home renovations, mid-century updates, and new builds. Every project starts with one question: what would make this home work better for the people living in it?
Not sure what's possible or what your project would realistically cost? That's exactly what our Modern Vision Assessment (MVA) is for — a $1,500 fixed-fee consultation that gives you a site-specific budget range, zoning review, and spatial strategy in 10–14 days. The fee is fully credited toward design services if you move forward.

> I hired Damian and Gadi to design an addition to my mid-century contemporary house. They presented numerous options in 3-D software to better visualize the design which was extremely helpful. We never felt pressured to settle on a particular design and incorporated our requests very nicely into the final product. They are extremely easy to work with and go the extra mile to achieve the desired results. They are also extremely responsive to our questions during construction. I can't say enough, we feel extremely happy and fortunate to have hired them!

## Community Q&A

**Q: is the yellow console table from west elm, and painted?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I have the same one, and it needs an update.

A: Hi,

No, I believe it came like that. I can check with the owner and come back to you with the information.

Have a great day.

Damian

**Q: Help with updating exterior** *(in Landscape Design)*

We are planning to add vinyl siding to the exterior of our house. We currently have wood siding, pictures below. I know vinyl siding is an issue for lots of people, however, we live in a neighborhood where most of the homes have it.

I would love to hear any ideas for what colors you'd recommend. The roof is staying and the front door is brand new. Also, the windows are relatively new so they will stay. We will not be doing any major structural exterior changes to the house.

I'd love to hear opinions on colors for the siding & trim and also suggestions on landscaping. We are in New Orleans, very tropical here - and I need low maintenance plantings, hence the liriope and monkeygrass. Thanks in advance!

We'll need to repaint the concrete porch, steps, and area below the siding.

A: I would recommend Hardie siding instead. Hardie also have a design feature where you can upload a photo of the exterior and play with the color before making a choice.

**Q: Need help/advice for difficult half-bathroom remodel** *(in Remodeling)*

We're redoing our half bathroom and having a problem coming up with ideas because of this extended countertop, the toilet being on the wall next to it (aren't changing that) and the piping coming thru the left side (cannot change that location). We were considering doing a vanity all the way across from wall to wall which is about 60 inches, but then the cabinets will hit the toilet and it may look too crowded. We also thought a 48-inch vanity wouldn't look right since we can't center it (again, due to the sink plumbing coming from the left wall).
The option which we're leaning towards is to get a 36-inch vanity (and then we'd have a 24-inch space to the right of it which could be used for a wastebasket, etc. (the existing vanity in the pic is a 30-inch). Would this be the best option?
Also, if anyone has any other good ideas (or if anyone remodeled their bathroom with a similar design), I'd love to hear about them and see photos as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

A: Check what we have done with these small bathroom. hopefully it will inspire you.

it will inspire you.

**Q: Help with exterior design, custom build** *(in Building a Home)*

Hi Houzzers! Getting ready to finalize plans for our custom build in California (napa landscape). Think huge oaks, golden grasses, olive groves as the natural landscape. Trying to decide on some changes to design. Want to have a bit of a transitional/modern European feel.
First pic is where we left it with Architect. Second pic is changes we are thinking, including:
a) Stucco entire house
b) make windows over door closer together to appear similar to steel glass doors below
c) make roof overhang thicker to appear as if upper windows and front door are a wall of glass; you enter into a breezeway of floor to ceiling glass that overlooks a valley of native Oaks
e) Make a few of the windows radius to give a French vibe
f) should we add mullions?
All comments thoughts welcome. Would love to hear your thoughts and opinions :).

A: You are in luck that you haven't started the construction yet, and you shouldn't have agreed to the plans and exterior if you weren't 100% happy.
I know it is painful to feel wrong sided by a professional, but just think that you're most likely investing a good amount to build the house. The Architect's fees will always be much less than to fix a situation that you don't feel comfortable with. I still suggest you hire a professional. Good Luck.

**Q: Need help with very odd home layout** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi all. The front door entrance to our home opens up and when you walk in you are immediately facing the door leading to the stairway downstairs to the basement. You need to then walk through the kitchen to get to the living room.

Any ideas on how to fix how bad this layout is? It’s a very tight entrance also and it just seems very odd.

I attached a picture of the floor plan with the front door entrance circled in blue. Thanks !

A: Yes, I think that moving the entrance to the side is a better idea even if it's not extremely logical. Another option of course is to move the kitchen, but that would be more expensive.

**Q: Create Modern Exterior** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hello,
Need some help to make our home exterior more modern. The original is where its all brown cedar exterior. We did a couple renderings where both have stucco siding above the garage and doing it all around with right side of the house being same siding and doing solid stain/paint in a grey. The hard part for me is the stone, ideally I would like to keep it and not spend a fortune replacing it. I do like the existing stone but with the rendering it feels a bit more lake house look and not modern. Do I basically have no choice but to change it if I want ultra modern. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!

A: It's absolutely fine, just a shame to cover the stone.
