Help me with my kitchen! We have been in our house for 10 years. There are two main areas that I’ve been collecting ideas about for the past decade. The exterior/front (I’ve already cluttered the dilemma pages on this one). And the Kitchen! There are too many talented people here for me not to ask “what would you do” about my kitchen. This is my kitchen (minus the staging in this photo, + window treatments). It’s a fine kitchen. But it’s builder basic in a lot of ways, and very beige. The cabinets aren’t solid wood. It has a 6-inch granite backsplash, except behind the range. I’m not looking to do a full kitchen renovation, but I know it can be improved. Our lower doors are trashed from kids, dogs, bikes, scooters, etc etc. At the very least, we’ll replace the doors/hardware. Paint too...we could paint the island or paint the uppers or lowers in different colors. I would prefer not to rip out the granite backsplash, as I know the issues with imperfect counter fabrications against the wall, wall damage, etc. The granite counters are fine, although a butcher block island or contrasting granite on the island would be swoon-y. Could I do a full wall backsplash (above granite and above cabinets) in wood, subway tile, or maybe even wallpaper? What about doing an accent wall on only one of the walls of the kitchen? I really like the look of open shelving and simple/deconstructed kitchens. Could I take down some uppers and install open shelves (maybe that shelving unit on the very right of the photo?). Would it look weird to do a counter-to-ceiling backsplash on just that one section of wall behind the open shelves? I really love custom range hoods too. I have a few ideas about this that involve adding or deleting cabinetry. I could add open cabinets to the ceiling above our cabinets, relocate the microwave and add a hood. Or, I could remove the cabinets that surround the microwave, relocate the microwave, add a hood, and maybe add open shelves on each side. I’m not a designer or construction person, and I’m very likely oversimplifying some of these ideas. I also have very eclectic tastes- rustic, modern, English country, farmhouse. HELP ME! A: I would remove the riser splash (as Jan said above, it's pretty easy and won't damage wall or countertops if done by a professional) and apply a full backsplash. With the style of your kitchen, I think something classic like Arabescatto Carrara marble tile would look very stylish. I would just make sure the tones go well with your granite -- not sure what granite is it and what tones are there. **Q: whole kitchen remodel ideas** *(in Design Dilemma)* Remodeling my kitchen & need help, i am so confused. First we are moving washer & dryer upstairs to one of the spare bedrooms & making my laundry room a new pantry. I am thinking white shaker cabinets but the island & wet bar grey shaker. Not sure about counter tops if i want to do a white or dark. I will attach the drawings. Any suggestions for cabinets, counters, paint color or floor. A: I would change the wall color to something light and go with light cabinets, like Fabuwood Allure Gallaxy Horizon. Very light gray, slick and bright. Combine it with brass or gold hardware. White marble backsplash would look very pretty with it because it has both grays and whites. **Q: Countertops urgent advice please.** *(in Remodeling)* Hello everybody. I'd love to hear from anyone who has used Della Terra Quartz on kitchen countertops. I am about to change my kitchen countertops (huge investment) so I just want to make sure I select a material that is not going to stain or chip easily. My installer has said that he would seal the quartz. A few (probably silly) questions: \- Is this quartz porous? I understand that other products like Cambria do not need a sealer. \- Do sealers wear off? \- Would you recommend any other brand over Della Terra? This is a considerable expense so I just want to make sure I do my research first. Thanks so much for your advice. A: We've had a great experience with Quartz Master, as well as with Caesarstone and MSI. No complaints from our customers whatsoever. And no need to seal quartz slabs, ever. **Q: White Grout with White Subway Tile in Bathroom Shower OR NOT?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I like the Clean, Blended look of White Grout with White Subway tile in a brick pattern for the shower wall and a Bath Tub Surround however my husband keeps telling me how dirty or hard it is going to keep clean and how we need to go with a darker grout.... thoughts? Has anyone regretted going with a very light or white Grout in a shower Wall for these reasons? . Our house is somewhat Modern and Traditional Farmhouse Taking all opinions and advice! TIA A: White grout is a classic and it's very easy to clean along with tiles. It gives a clean, sanitary look every bathroom needs because you actually do want to see any mold or dirt in your bathroom and remove it as soon as possible. **Q: Color my Kitchen!!** *(in Home Decorating)* I’m redoing my kitchen. I wasn’t the one that designed it in the first place. I bought it and now I’m ready to change it! The issues I’m having are The granite countertops are black. I like them. They can stay. I hate the cabinet color and want to change it. But with black counters, my options are limited. I’ve always said I will never have a white kitchen, but bc of the counters... I might HAVE to! The rest of my house is beautiful grays, silvers, and splashes of purple. I want the kitchen to stay neutral colors. I wouldn’t mind gray cabinets, I love gray!!! But I have not found one shade I like on any cabinets I’ve seen. I’m open to split color cabinets (one color on top, different on the bottom) The light fixtures and the backsplash are going to be changed or gone. SEND IDEAS AND HELP!!! Will mostly black kitchen looks awful??? Please help me!! A: I would definitely start with changing the flooring and decide on the rest from there. Adding more lighting and a light-colored backsplash would be easy, fast, and inexpensive fixes to make this space brighter. Painting cabinets is very expensive and should be done by professionals, using high-quality paint.
