Top Tread Stairways builds two signature products for homeowners who want smart design, real craftsmanship, and something a little different: indoor wooden slides and alternating tread stairs. We've been doing it for 20 years and counting!

Our indoor wooden slides bring craftsmanship, movement, and unforgettable joy into the heart of a custom home. These are handcrafted hardwood slides, built to feel intentional, elegant, and lasting — a signature feature for families building a one-of-a-kind home.

Our alternating tread stairs are a space-saving stairway solution for lofts, cabins, tiny homes, attics, and secondary access points. Each alternating tread stair is custom-built to fit the home, the layout, and the homeowner's vision, offering a beautiful alternative to bulky staircases or awkward ladders.

Founded by Clyde Martin in 2006, Top Tread Stairways also builds spiral staircases, ship ladders, mono-stringer stairs, custom railings, countertops, tables, and other fine wood projects — serving homeowners, builders, and designers nationwide. But at the heart of our work are two things: wooden slides that turn a home into a place people never forget, and alternating tread stairs that solve the hardest stair spaces in the house.

### Featured Review

**★★★★★ — Carol C, June 2026**

> These stairs are for attic storage access and replace a rickety pull down ladder. The craftmanship is superb. We didn't expect the stairs to be beautiful, but they are a work of art. We ordered the stairs to be heavy and beefy to match our house construction and they blend in perfectly. They are very sturdy. Clyde was wonderful to work with and helped us out with all of our questions. We couldn't be happier with the stairs!

> I contacted Clyde at Tom Trend Stairways after being encouraged by a business associate to have him help out with a proper stairway into my basement. The new stairway is not only beautiful made of red oak it is solid and sturdy with hand rails on both sides. I now feel
> safe and enjoy going up and down these stairs. The work was completed in one day. The workers were courteous and careful to pick up after themselves before leaving the job. I would recommend these craftsman without hesitation to family and friends.

**★★★★★ — Meme Davis, June 2026**

> Top Tread Stairway solved our very unique and challenging task, of building a staircase to access our storage loft. Their workmanship is top notch and the construction materials they offer, are good quality.
> We are throughly pleased with the staircase they built for us. It fits perfectly in our space and looks beautiful too. We think it’s a win win for solving our staircase dilemma.

**★★★★★ — Diane Antheunisse, June 2026**

> We had Top Tread Stairways build a custom "alternating tread" staircase for our new house in Colorado. We love it! They shipped it unfinished in 2 pieces and our construction guys installed it and stained it and made an iron handrail for it. It is beautiful, well made and highly functional. We've had it for 3 years and it looks as good as the day it was new. It was the perfect solution for our situation because we didn't have the floor space for a traditional stair and this way we can access our basement easily.
> Everyone comments on it. A real conversation piece!
> They were professional every step of the way and the price was reasonable too!
> You can't go wrong with Top Tread Stairways.

**★★★★★ — Chad Steward, June 2026**

> Ordered a custom designed compact stair for attic access in 2024.
> My desired design was a little weird, but Top Tread happily worked through it with me, helped recommend appropriate changes to my original concept, and delivered a 3D model. Stairs were delivered on time, look great, and have worked out exactly as hoped!

**★★★★★ — Paula Nelson, June 2026**

> I'm getting so many WOW'S for my new iron stair railings. They are floor to ceiling and the attention to detail is remarkable!
>
> It's timeless!

**★★★★★ — anthonyroston, June 2026**

> As a Custom Home Builder, building upscale and often complicated and detailed homes, we must use only the best subcontractors.
> Top Tread Stairways has proven itself to be both professional and skilled. Their customer service is exceptional, and the quality of work is unmatched. Because of this, I can comfortably recommend Top Tread Stairways to my fussiest clients. We have used Top Tread Stairways for many years, and the quality of work has remained consistent.

**★★★★★ — handyman130, March 2022**

> We had Top Tread build us a beautiful custom baluster and install a stair railing. Top shelf work and reasonable price. Highly recommend these guys...

**★★★★★ — Alex Sargisian, Jan. 2022**

> Clyde is the most amazing and professional carpenter/contractor that I've ever dealt with. He's prompt and very accommodating and by far the best priced. He also hit a home run with my floating walnut staircase. It brings such life and warmth to the foyer while keeping the structural integrity with geometric clean lines. Thank you so much!

**Comment from Top Tread Stairways:**

> Wow! Thanks Alex! I feel to privileged have been a part in making your dream stair project come to fruition. Thanks for your review!

**★★★★★ — HU-402667497, Aug. 2021**

> Beautiful product, and great quality! I asked for highly figured wood, and I got it! Very impressed. The shipping container, was also very impressive. I can’t imagine, the product getting damaged. I had it shipped to Portland Oregon, with no problems. Over all, a great experience. Thanks Clyde!

**Comment from Top Tread Stairways:**

> Thanks Tyler! It was a joy to work for you!

**★★★★★ — Patricia Valencia-Carlson, July 2020**

> Top Tread Stairways was there when I needed them! We were having our floors replaced including up a curved staircase and I really wanted new balusters put in rather urgently so they could work with the floor people. Top Tread Stairways responded to my request for help by sending Mike, he worked with the flooring guy, helped me select balusters that would look nice, keeping the original railing, and it turned out beautifully. Mike was pleasant and professional and the cost was very reasonable.

**Comment from Top Tread Stairways:**

> Thanks a lot Pat. It was a joy to work for you!

**★★★★★ — Roman Molitvenik, May 2020**

> Clyde and Top Tread Stairways outdid themselves with this one of a kind White Oak custom stairway! We had a concept and Clyde realized our dream and made it happen. Top Tread delivered the units personally from AZ to Northern California and installed them.
> Blown away with how beautiful and high end the finished product is, see the pictures. Call these guys if you want amazing quality and custom solutions nationwide! Again thank you Clyde and Team!

**Comment from Top Tread Stairways:**

> Thank you very much Roman. It was truly a pleasure to work for you!

**★★★★★ — Jeff Osterhout, Jan. 2017**

> Clyde was great. We had an idea of what we wanted for updating our railing from the 70's but after talking with him changed our mind to an all wood railing. The railing ended up better than we expected. They where very clean and on time.

**Comment from Top Tread Stairways:**

> Hey Jeff, great to hear from you!! Thanks for the review. It was a pleasure working for you.

 - Description: This is a white oak alternating tread stair with our popular unfinished look that is heading to LA. The tiny home builder sent Clyde a sample — showed him exactly what he wanted. The challenge was matching the raw, natural white oak feel, but we accomplished it. This alternating tread stair fits between two walls, features a closed riser, and is about 30" wide. Rail brackets ship with it so they can hang handrails on both sides. This stairs is fully code compliant — and even City of LA-approved.…

 - Description: Top Tread Stairways installed a wooden stairs/slide combination in a beautiful home in Visalia, CA. Here are the specs of this amazing project: The slide measures 32 feet long, which includes a 1 foot level area at top and 3 foot level area at the bottom. The slide is made up of 225 stack-laminated layers. We didn’t actually weigh it, but our calculations put the slide and all the railing parts at a total of 800 pounds. The slide itself, due to its knotty alder construction, only weighs around 5…

 - Description: This was a new home in a high-end gated community called Serano. The customer wanted the look of open-riser stairs but the area under the stair was to be filled with the electronic equipment to run their high-tech home. So we came up with a design which included having the risers 8 inches back from the edge of the treads. Yes, that's right, an 8" nosing projection! The local code only allows a 1-1/4" nosing projection, so we made the treads thick enough that the space between then was less than…

These are open-riser stairs with Beech treads and flat-grain Doug Fir stringers which gives them somewhat of a contemporary look. They were installed in a three-story commercial building. - Description: Welcome to Top Tread Stairways. So, here we've got a curved or circular staircase that we just finished installing at a custom home in Shingle Springs, CA. It located right inside a window so you can enjoy it from both the outside and inside. The first 5 treads are straight and the next 7 are in the curved portion. ## Community Q&A

**Q: how big is that landing between flights?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Bryan. Thanks for reaching out! The overall size of this landing is 31 x 50 inches and the clear width as you walk across the landing is 25 inches. The stairs are 23 inches wide.
Let us know if we can build one for you. Clyde - 520-895-2060

**Q: Jaka jest cena wykonania schodów w skali z zakrzywioną zjeżdżalnią?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Jaka jest cena wykonania modelu schodów z krętą zjeżdżalnią na zamówienie i wysyłanie ich do Polski?

A: The cost of building a scaled model of a Stair Slide just like the one I am holding in the picture is US$700 plus shipping. I will gladly get you a price for shipping to Poland if I can have the address

**Q: Well-Behaved Cold-Hardy (or "english gardeny" annual) Rose companions?** *(in Antique Roses)*

I've been planning out some seed starting, and wanted to solicit some ideas--and photos!--for companion plants.

I'm a huge fan of peonies, clematis, tulips, daffodils, lavender, catmint, calamint, russian sage and even white glads, but am hoping to branch out. My heathers, as much as I love them, tend not to last very long with me.

I know Diane grows hops and I'm just obsessed with the little green flowers.

Plants I've wanted to try are:

Silver Fountain Butterfly Bush:

Hopflower Oregano:

Whorled Milkweed:

Tatting Fern:

Blue Flax:

Any you've tried and love? Any that are exceptionally invasive that you'd steer clear from? I've heard wild violets and ordinary butterfly bushes tend to invade. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!!

A: I'm curious if anyone has tried the new "Drops of Jupiter" oregano with roses or elsewhere. I am keeping my eyes open at my local nursery for that one. I am so very fond of lime/chartreuse foliage and wonder how well it would take hot dry climates like mine. (The average golden oregano at the nurseries seems to like some shade here.) The flowers look pretty similar to Rotkugel Oregano, but the foliage is lime colored.

**Q: Eglantyne or Sceptre d Isle** *(in Roses)*

I am sitting here in the middle of a snow globe and am comtemplating adding on of these to my DA order.
I have used my gift card so this would be an ”extra”
For my yard I had to have a few-Winchester Cathedral (still trying for that perfect white) Boscobel (fragrance) and Princess Alex of Kent (fragrance). I wasn’t super excited about these but they were ones I really need for my vision of the garden.
I am kind of excited about both Eglantyne and SdI so should I add one to the order or should I wait for next years birthday certificate?
Anything you love or hate about either? For me, fragrance is the number one attribute.
My lilacs and peonies better be loving all this snow!

A: I just realized that when I post on my computer, I am on my husband's account. I am sorry for the confusion. I'll need to switch accounts. I am judijunebug.
Judi

**Q: Best garden pictures of 2021** *(in Roses)*

Thought it would be fun to share some of our favorite pictures of our gardens this season while we wait for the new season to start. I was going through my rose pictures to see what I want to change around and was so happy with how the garden looked this year, I almost forgot that it looked so beautiful since this fall it has declined so much with my lack of care! There is nothing like a spring garden with roses! Can’t wait to see everyone’s beautiful garden.

A: I am in awe of your gardens, all of you that shared. Noseometer, the pairing of pink roses with all those misty blues and lavenders is just what I hope to accomplish eventually in my gardens. I'm collecting and propagating Nepeta, Russian Sage, several blue salvias and agastaches with the same type of pairings in my garden. You have accomplished what I dream of.
Judi

**Q: Doug fir on the treads or glulam?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Great looking stairs! Love the width too!

A: Thanks! These Stairs were built in my shop and shipped to Skagway Alaska where I had the joy of installing them. The treads are Euro-Beech and the stringers are flat grain Doug Fir. Can I build you a set?
