> David Heide design studio team members played a major design role in converting our dysfunctional kitchen into a sensible space that truly improved the quality and productivity of our kitchen life. For that reason we have consulted with them once again for a whole house design project from the floor up on a new property They have been available by virtual means and by phone when ever needed Their creative design living space direction from color scheme, materials to overall big picture is spot on. Their attention to detail is stellar. It’s as if they have a sixth sense. Truly professionals in every aspect and I highly recommend them for any size project.

> “And on the eighth day, God created David Heide Design Studio.”
> Honestly the best decision I ever could have made! After years of contemplating renovating my 1940 historic home in Minnetonka, and meeting with various design an architect groups, I came across David Heide. In less than five minutes I knew my search was over. David knew more about my house than I did. His enthusiasm and love of architecture and design were unlike anyone I have ever met. A bonus is that he is an absolute riot! He speaks his mind and holds firm to what he believes while guiding the restoration in the right direction. What I admire most about David and his team Michael, Elizabeth, and Chris was their passion and vision to restore and bring my home back to life. We did the entire house and absolutely everything I needed from the contractor, design, fabrics and paint colors were handled through DHDS. To say it was a BLAST is an understatement. The processed evolved and the results only confirmed that going with DHDS was the best decision ever for me. My friends and family just love it!

> After searching Chicagoland for a creative and outstanding design/architect studio I found David Heide in Minneapolis. We were and are so impressed with his work that we commuted to Minneapolis, and they commuted to us in Lake Forest, IL. Our older home project (Kitchen, small addition, new bathroom, and family room) is nearing completion. From the builder, to the cabinet maker to the other major subs...they have all commented on what an "incredible" project this is. I am so proud of what we (my husband and I) with David, and Brad have created. It exceeds what I hoped for. So much design where we live is predictable, not very creative, and frankly...oversized...for an older home.
>
> David Heide, and Brad Belka are masters of restoration, updating, and renovation of older homes and also building from scratch. They understand human scale, materials, practical details, and fine craftspersonship. And, they know that all these elements count in the big picture. While not "cheap", we feel their services are a bargain when I think of what we might have ended up with without their guidance.
>
> Check out their portfolio...pictures are worth 1000 words. Also, they have won so many awards. Thank you David, Michael (superb, tasteful interior design), and the always patient Brad.

> This firm is truly a cut above. I commend them for their innovation, transparency, diligence and cost consciousness. The end result was an exterior entertainment center that has been an absolute joy for us. We love to entertain and always receive numerous compliments for this setting. Special thanks to Mark Nelson for his ability to turn dreams into reality!

> We hired David, Brad, Michael and the DHD team to remodel our "1920's" living room. The results are phenomenal! Their vision and design talents are second to none. They have been a joy to work with -- professional, enthusiastic, relationship-based. They have an outstanding professional network of artisans tapped to complete our project, from construction, to creation of beautiful historically accurate leaded glass windows, to flooring, to paint and wallpaper, etc. We soon extended our project to the exterior -- designing a beautiful pergola and trellis. Incredible! Now they are helping us choose a new exterior paint scheme for our home, gardening shed and large 'carriage house'. We are so thankful that we found DHD and their network of professionals! Truly the best.

> The Studio handled the gut-and-rebuild of my condo from start to finish. Very professional, very responsive, very good ideas and suggestions, very good connections to top notch contractors, and they did a great job of honoring my thematic design thoughts. Fun to work with. Very pleased with the results…an incredibly improved space in which to live. Only caution I’d give concerns costs and money management. The Studio tends to start at the top of the choice range but grudgingly comes down under pressure rather than starting lower and coming up to the point where you’re satisfied. But I’ve passed the dog food recovery phase now and so will give ‘em 5 stars for design and ease of working with them.

> We worked with David Heide Design Studio to help renovate and re-design our kitchen in our Southern California home. We weren’t sure what we wanted, but David spent a lot of time asking how we utilized our kitchen and then presented us with a couple of options. In the end we decided upon an entirely new kitchen layout that made much more sense than the current format. David has big-picture thinking and was able to also make some suggestions that integrated the living space connected to the kitchen. He thought of many ways to incorporate function into his beautiful and well thought-out designs in ways that we would have never considered.
>
> We found David to have an excellent and keen eye for details, but he always kept in mind the room and the house as a whole, and how everything worked together. We feel such a cohesive thread between all the spaces David helped design for us, we are so happy with the results! The kitchen alone is beyond what we had imagined.
>
> We had the greatest experience working with him. He is professional, courteous, efficient, patient and most of all got the job done to our satisfaction.
>
> We highly recommend DHD Studio for any help with home remodel and design.
>
> With thanks,
> Jeff from California

> Had high hopes when we started, but it did not work out. Chris is wonderful to work with, the rest of the program was meh. Felt like it was a huge waste of money for what we got. Ended up firing them and going with someone else who actually asked me what kinds of colors and things I liked. What a concept.

**Comment from David Heide Design Studio:**

> Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you found working with Chris a positive experience. We pride ourselves on our customer service and attention to detail, and always strive to find solutions specific to our clients and their lifestyle. We regret your experience with the Studio did not align with your expectations.

> David Heide and his team were with us every step of the way through a whole house renovation of a historical home in Saint Paul, MN. Working with them was an absolute pleasure. Their passion and expertise on every single aspect of the project was impeccable and, as a result, we got to relax and enjoy a process that, for some people, can be stressful. In our community, I have heard the reputation of David Heide Design Studio expressed as, "If you want the best, call David Heide Design Studio". I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to experience the truth of this sentiment. I would love to work with them again someday!

**★★★★★ — Amy Pearson, Feb. 2017**

> The David Heide Design team are professional and enjoyable, even through a large, long term project. We worked with DHD for a historical addition and restoration of our 1908 home with architectural provenance and we could not be happier with the results. They accommodated our desire for historical harmony and modern amenities, coupled with family friendly design. Our home is beautiful, comfortable and functional at the highest level. We would highly recommend both the architectural team and the interior design team.

**Comment from David Heide Design Studio:**

> Thank you Amy! Your project turned out beautifully and we're so pleased to have collaborated with you on it.

**★★★★★ — Mona Rawlings, Jan. 2017**

> We hired David Heide and Associates for a very modest project, to assist us in choosing flooring and paint for our Midcentury Modern. My husband and I joke that David and his associate, Michael Crull, saved us so much money by not allowing us to make poor choices.
>
> Additionally, they were able to tell us the historical features of our house and how best to preserve these features while renovating the house for current times.

**Comment from David Heide Design Studio:**

> Thank you for your comments! We've always felt that architects and interior designers can add value to a project, no matter the size. We're so glad we were able to assist you with your project!

**★★★★★ — Yvonne Flaherty, Jan. 2017**

> I have worked with David, Elizabeth and the entire team for several months and am extremely pleased with their follow up, ideas, and flexibility. I have a downtown condo and everyone raves about the new design and improvements. I look forward to working with David Heide Design on additional projects in the future.

**Comment from David Heide Design Studio:**

> Thanks Yvonne! We're glad you enjoy the results of the project, and we can't wait for our next collaboration!

  - Description: This house was designed by noted architect Clarence Johnston and built in 1901. The structure is a two story, 3542 square foot, five-bedroom brick house with a detached garage, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the historic Hill District. The architectural style might be called transitional, combining Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles, but Johnson’s design is ultimately more complicated than that. Our project entailed remodeling what we refer to as the ‘ba…

  - Location: Minnetonka, MN
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: We enhanced the whimsical character of the original house with lots of details including custom cottage-style cabinetry, scalloped cut-outs, and that particular hue of green paint straight out of a 1940s-era decor magazine. Many of these motifs draw on other detailing throughout the house creating a unified connection between the new kitchen and other living areas. Combining color and supporting details like amber crystal knobs, William Morris designed wallpaper, and glass fronted cabinetry crea…
- [Craftsman Bungalow](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/craftsman-bungalow-pj-vj~5863332)
  - Location: Saint Paul, MN
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: When we approached the remodeling of this 1913 Craftsman bungalow, several governing principles were immediately established. First, the pedigree of the house obligated us to be good stewards of its history and to respect its careful detailing and relative scale of spaces. Drawing on our extensive experience in decorative arts, we incorporated fine details like art glass panels and custom lighting that make this project completely unique to its location and owners.

  - Location: Lilydale, MN
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: We were tasked with taking a kitchen island shaped like a grand piano, builder-basic cabinetry, and gaudy pendant lights down to the studs and starting fresh, with the limitation of working within the existing footprint. The clients wanted a space that was airy and contemporary: something simple yet simultaneously special.

  - Location: Saint Paul, MN
  - Photos: 3
  - Description: It all started with a mirrored back wall of a Victorian-era barber shop purchased from a junk shop. The grand, mirrored back wall sat unused and forgotten in the basement of a grand Victorian house. Years later, the desire for additional wine storage led to a basement cleaning and a rediscovery of the antique piece. We were called in to design a large basement renovation project involving steel beams and removal of columns to accommodate a large wine storage facility, office, billiard room, gues…

  - Location: Minneapolis, MN
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: By creating a comprehensive plan addressing functional and aesthetic improvements, we took the house simultaneously back to 1908 and forward to 2019. Working within the footprint of the original building, we designed the remodeling, the historic detailing, custom lighting and interior furnishings. Programmatically, the awkward layout and lack of useful storage space combined with a dysfunctional kitchen defined the project. The walk-through second floor bathroom, treacherous basement stair and l…

  - Description: For years, this island on Lake Minnetonka has been the summer destination for city dwellers. The location was perfect for our clients, who intended to spend long summer weekends at the lake, as it offers both seclusion and close proximity to the city. The island is small, and only has about 20 houses on it—most of which were built at the beginning of the last century. Being on the island provides one of those moments of pure timelessness. Our challenge was to create a new house with the look and…
- [University Grove Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/university-grove-residence-pj-vj~200441)
  - Location: Falcon Heights, MN
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: When a fire destroyed the Tudor that had been on this site since 1931, the owners opted for something completely different: a sleek, minimalist design of interlocking cubes. The transparency of the house enables it to take full advantage of its wooded site, and the open plan within is perfect for its owners’ living style.
- [Victorian Brownstone Condo](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/victorian-brownstone-condo-pj-vj~5500776)
  - Location: Minneapolis, MN
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: In the late 1890s, sturdy brownstone row houses at the edge of downtown Minneapolis were quite popular. Over time, many of these Victorian-era structures were demolished to make way for freeways and other urban development. This one in the Stevens Square neighborhood survived, despite a 1979 renovation that divided the building into condominiums and stripped out much of the original woodwork. The homeowner's 1,200-square-foot, two-level condo, with its million-dollar views of downtown, also had…

  - Location: Minneapolis, MN
  - Photos: 2
  - Description: While David Heide and Chris Christofferson, of David Heide Design Studio, were working on a second-floor remodel in this Uptown home (to create a new master suite), the homeowners mentioned how they would love to have a porch on the back of the house. David and Chris agreed. The house was not only missing an upper and lower back porch historic to the structure’s style and period; new windows—and then a door—added to bring light into the new master suite provided a more balanced fenestration patt…
- [Deephaven Craftsman](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/deephaven-craftsman-pj-vj~185520)
  - Location: Wayzata, MN
  - Photos: 29
  - Description: The existing space was extensively remodeled. On the first floor, the kitchen was greatly expanded, a sitting room added, part of an existing porch was incorporated into the house as a lakeside dining area, and a large side entry with sinks both inside and out was added. The existing detached garage was demolished, and a new tuck-under garage has been incorporated. We designed a kitchen appropriately scaled to our client's various needs, all of it beautifully encapsulated within period-style cab…

  - Location: Tomahawk, WI
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: Set along the confluence of two rivers, a long-cherished wooded site has been in the family for years. When our client acquired acreage next to her parents, we were commissioned to design a new house. She wanted a comfortable and relaxed getaway that would blend in with its natural surroundings and function as a year-round, multi-generational retreat. Inspired by early 20th century houses nearby, this retreat features lots of entertaining space, six bedrooms and baths along with private getaway…
- [Union Park Tudor](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/union-park-tudor-pj-vj~2263912)
  - Location: Saint Paul, MN
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: Sometimes the search for home brings you back to your childhood. That was the case for our client, who serendipitously purchased a house he had always admired growing up in St. Paul. Considerate renovations of the 1908 home create a place for our client’s son to enjoy his own St. Paul childhood. On a street lined with old trees and old houses, this house stands out for its architectural pedigree. Designed by Minnesota architect Franklin Ellerbe, it was imperative that renovations respect and uph…

  - Location: Minneapolis, MN
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Longtime supporters of the arts, the owners of this charming Lake of the Isles cottage desired a better venue for hosting friends and fellow art patrons. The newly reconfigured floor plan now accommodates their modern lifestyle while providing a setting as welcoming for two as it is for many. The rooms, while much more open to one another and the surrounding landscape, maintain their historic scale and individual sensibility. Indoor living spaces extend to the outdoors through folding glass door…
- [St. Croix River House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/st-croix-river-house-pj-vj~309996)
  - Location: River Falls, WI
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: Well-loved for decades, this 1,000 square-foot 1970 ranch house, nestled in the pines of the Saint Croix River bluffs, always had the valuable talent of getting out of the way. For the owners, it was about being at the river, not inside the cabin. After arriving one day to discover a burst water pipe had ruined much of the building, they decided major reconstruction was the best option. This led to a complete reconsideration of size, use, and aesthetic of the house. Still, the owners wanted to m…
