**Q: Wrong Rendering-Now What?!?!!** *(in Polls)*

Hi Houzzers,

I need your help!

My architect designed the front of our home with 5 small windows on the second floor. On paper and in the 3D rendering, it looked great! Now that the nails have met the wood, the windows cannot be equally spaced due to a wall inside the house. :( I don’t know what to do about it. I thought about removing the window but then there will be a huge space that looks worst! So my question to you is: do the windows look fine the way they are? Would you even notice? Or would you pull up to my house and be like, “what were they thinking-those windows are off?!”

A: I am not certain that abandoning one window is you best solution, but, if it is, you would not be the first person to sell one leftover window on Craigslist. 

From the plan snippet you posted, it appears to be an error (or field change) during the framing stage. 

My most important question to you is, why are you putting windows in your WIC? The direct sun is pretty harsh on clothes in a closet. Has this been discussed with your Architect?

**Q: Help!!! Fireplace NEEDS a facelift!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I’m looking to change my fireplace. Willing to paint, reface, etc but more on the inexpensive side. I’m giving my entire living room a facelift.

A: 1\. Check the specs on the fireplace to determine distance to combustible surfaces above the face of the fireplace. Directly above that glass is a no go zone for wood. To the sides it is generally a small zone but above is probably 9-12"
2\. After addressing your safety issue, the sky's to limit (unless you are a cosmonaut).

**Q: kitchen sink - is Kingston a good brand?** *(in Remodeling)*

Our contractor picked this under mount sink out for us. It’s Kingston. Our kitchen is going to be modern-ish/transitional. Faucet is a grohe. Is this a good brand of sink?

A: If you are a Costco member, check out the Hans Grohe they usually sell for kitchen faucets. Very good faucet in the $200 range.

**Q: Help please Asbestos Freak out!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My husband had old tiles in our basement and laundry room removed.After the fact! found out that they were asbestos tiles many were chipped and broken up into small pieces. Knowing that the particles are airborne and the dangers asbestos poses,should I dispose of all my clothes and anything else that is porous that I had in my laundry room?

**Q: How much did you have planned before you built?** *(in Building a Home)*

Obviously a person can't have a custom home built before the plans are in hand but what about things like cabinet colors, floors and bathroom vanities? Pulls, knobs, lights and audio? I see so many that know exactly what they are going to have installed a year or more, before they even build. Am I way behind not having this decided? Is there a place at Houzz that I can go to that will give me a time line for decisions to be made? At the very least I think an interior designer can help me with colors.

A: The more info that is locked down the better. Details will add up fast. Light fixtures, heated towel bars, closet build outs, the front door handle style, door casing, light switch type (single point switches or a more techie approach), furniture layout (does your sofa need an outlet), so much more.

You are just about to frame the floor. Have you selected your finish flooring? Where might you have transitions to flooring changes?  Do you want walk in showers? Make sure to double check the framers are aware of the toilet and tub locations so they don't put a joist in the way of the plumbing. Is the foundation vented or mechanically conditioned? How tight do you want your house to be? Is there a sill sealer between the concrete stem wall and the plate? Are you putting in a whole house fan or HRV?

For your audio/data runs, CAT6 everywhere is a good idea. It will take you into the future. Beware of reliance on WIFI. It may go away soon. This came to me as a warning from an AV guy who is really good. The info is coming in and being hidden away from most sources but in a few short years I suspect that WIFI will suffer a miserable death. I run data cable to each room in my projects so you can be plugged in.

The other thing I put in my projects (I have a pretty good budget as I am building in a high end market) is an ERV. We build really tight houses and there are a lot of toxins that are used in materials and finishes (including furniture) and so I want to make sure the house is breathing. 

I know someone wrote a note regarding not worrying about the cabinet pulls. I say to think about it now. If you want certain type of cabinet pulls they need to be mortised into the drawers and doors. If you know this ahead of time this can be done with a CNC machine as they are building the cabinets. To mortise those on site is not as cost effective.

**Q: What to fill nail holes in trim, before painting?** *(in Paint)*

Getting ready to prime and paint the trim in our new home. There are so many products out there for filling the nail holes, everyone claims their product is best~ What really is the best product to use? The trim is pine and it will be painted~

A: Paintguy22 has your back. Follow those instructions. Using Caulk to fill nail holes is like putting bar b que sauce on your ice cream. Yes, bbq sauce is good and ice cream is good but why would you put bbq sauce on ice cream?
