**★★★★★ — Michael Hospelt Photography, Dec. 2015**

> I had the pleasure to photograph a wine tasting building and wine vault in the Napa Valley, and the remodel of a Victorian house in San Francisco. What stands out in Kurt Melander’s designs is the creativity he brings to every project, along with a natural feel and grace with subtle light settings. Very easy to photograph. Kurt Melander is the dream architect to work with, combining creativity and unique style with attention to his clients’ wishes.

- [New York Loft](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/new-york-loft-pj-vj~168376)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: This long and narrow Chelsea apartment, with perfectly framed views of the Empire State Building to the north and rooftop water towers to the south, was originally a shop floor in a 19th century button factory. Seeking to maintain the original industrial quality of this extraordinary space while transforming it into a residence, we exposed and restored its brick walls and barrel vaulted ceilings and preserved a single space along which living, dining, kitchen, and master bedroom are organized. A…
- [Wilkinson-Given Townhouse](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/wilkinson-given-townhouse-pj-vj~169740)
  - Location: San Francisco, CA
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: The major challenge in this renovation project was to carefully weave a new owner-required elevator into a 1930s split level row house, located high on a steep hill in San Francisco’s Dolores Heights neighborhood. We worked closely with the clients and determined the only feasible place for the 6 x 8 foot concrete elevator shaft was in the middle of the house. This location connected the basement garage to all four floors above and created access to a new master bedroom suite opening up to spect…
- [Belvedere Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/belvedere-residence-pj-vj~170022)
  - Location: Belvedere, CA
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: This new 8,000 square foot private residence located adjacent to San Francisco Bay on Belvedere Island captures the essence of traditional old world Italian living. The clients, a husband and wife, wanted a peaceful retreat where they could gather with family and friends to enjoy the best that California has to offer. Melander Architects collaborated with the interior design firm The Wiseman Group and Laurie Gold to create a rich design employing simple forms, traditional materials, and abundant…
- [Mill Valley Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mill-valley-residence-pj-vj~170066)
  - Location: Mill Valley, CA
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: This four story 1880’s craftsman-style summer home owned by Paul Wiseman and his partner Richard Snyder is located in the heart of Mill Valley’s historic Redwood Grove neighborhood. The structure was in need of a complete restoration and required a keen sensitivity to the building’s historic character. Wiseman brought us onto his team because of our past experiences working together on historic residences and our comfort in navigating the requirements of city planning departments while preservin…
- [Wilson Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/wilson-residence-pj-vj~168274)
  - Location: Walnut Grove, CA
  - Photos: 19
  - Description: A farm family native to the California Delta region, the owners wanted to move from their suburban home to a working farmhouse in the midst of their pear orchard. The program included a residence, a barn, and a guest quarters. The buildings are loosely arranged around a central courtyard to create a sheltered area for family gatherings and allude subtly to historic California farm compounds. Long and low, each building looks back on the others across the open courtyard, unified by an understated…
- [The Church Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-church-residence-pj-vj~168101)
  - Location: Turtle Lake, WI
  - Photos: 20
  - Description: This one-room church was originally built in 1898 in the middle of a large open field in Northern Wisconsin. In 1996 the deteriorating structure was reconfigured as a year-round architecture, art studio, and residence. To preserve the power of the grand interior volume, the new bedroom and bathroom were suspended above the kitchen using a separate structural system from that of the original church. A new central fireplace was introduced to provide a strong and simple interior focal element, whic…
- [Greenwich Village Townhouse](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/greenwich-village-townhouse-pj-vj~167984)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: A long-standing client hired Melander Architects to remodel his landmark 1852 Greenwich Village townhouse. The once gracious home had been subdivided into rental units and had fallen into disrepair over the past fifty years. The client wished to restore the building to a single family home with a ground-level flat. On our first visit, we recognized the townhouse had two unique assets: a generous private garden to the north and a patchwork of original parquet floors. Our design preserves these as…
