### Reviews

**★★★★★ — Julie Jones, May 2018**

> We contracted for Jeff Klingel to do a green and white landscape project for the front of our house in October, 2017. The plantings were put in last fall, and we were thrilled with the design. However, when everything bloomed last spring, some of the plantings were pink, which did not look nice at all with our exterior paint colors! We contacted Jeff, and he agreed that his supplier had given him the wrong shrubs. Being the true professional, he said that it would be best to wait until fall to replace the plants, so this morning, he and his crew came and not only put in beautiful WHITE encore azaleas and WHITE Sister Teresa hydrangea, but also new mulch. Once again, we are thrilled with the landscape plan AND also the white blooms. It is wonderful to work with a local landscaper who has such a high standard for not only the landscape plan but also the landscape quality. Jeff understands that this is a second home for us, so he took that into consideration when designing the landscaping for this historic home. I only wish that I had the ability to post a photograph with this review, so that you could see how amazing this landscaping is. 5 stars!!!!

> Jeff Klingel's landscape design has been professional and easy to work with on our new home. The team arrived on time every day and put in foundation plantings and sod. No "mess" was left at our home after the job was completed.
> We will definitely work with Jeff and his company in the future.

> Jeff did an excellent job redesigning the landscapes at our vacation properties on the Eastern Shore of VA over the past two years. He developed plans that are both in keeping with the style of the homes and complementary to existing architectural elements. He did a great job selecting plants that met our low-maintenance requirements while providing visual beauty throughout the four seasons. His company was very responsive and professional to work with and also respectful of deadlines and our house-guest schedules. Since we had to coordinate these projects remotely, it was very comforting to know that we were working with professionals that came highly recommended. We are very pleased with the projects and constantly receive compliments on their work. We look forward to working with them on future phases of the landscape design!

> Jeff has been working with us for a few years now. His services, from landscape design to installation, has been superb. We love the fact that he is in tune not only to the location but also to the design of the house and surrounding environment. His quotes are clear and concise. You always know what you are getting, so there have never been any surprises. Jeff is creative, very knowledgeable and responsive to the rare situation where a particular plant did not do well. We love the results (thanks Jeff!) and look forward to many future phases of landscaping.

> I've worked with Jeff for 10 years and find him to be intelligent not only in his design, but in his execution. As a custom builder, I need to surround myself with high level resources and Jeff never disappoints. I'd recommend him to anyone without reservation.

> Jeff Klingel did a great job for us, putting in a new walkway to the front door and landscaping the front of the house. We got several quotes for the job and a lot of the high-end stonework we liked was out of our budget. Jeff worked with us to design a walk and select material that worked within our budget. He also listened to what we wanted in terms of plant selection and maintenance, and had great ideas to help us choose plantings that gave us the beachy-coastal look we wanted and that do well in our climate. He always responded to our concerns and queries, and when we had a sudden growth of invasive nutsedge mixed in with our ornamental grasses he helped me figure out the problem (I didn't want to pull our the wrong grass!).
> The project included a wonderful underground irrigation system that keeps the plants healthy in summer and saves us hours of watering maintenance each week.
>
> Jeff's crew was professional and efficient, and the project was finished on time, within budget. He has a wealth of knowledge about plants and gave us great advice on how to maintain the landscape, and once returned to replace a plant that had died. I highly recommend Jeff's work.

> Jeff did the landscape design for our bay side yard. He was able to create a very appealing back yard for us using a combination turf, trees, shrubs, and grasses. The landscape blends nicely with the natural bay side grasses. Jeff has a great eye for landscape design combined with in depth knowledge of what grows and thrives in the wind and salt spray of our environment.

> We expressed our wants and needs to Jeff, and he arrived with a ton of creative ideas. He achieved the exact look that we wanted for our front yard. He monitored the plantings all summer and fall. By the end of the season we had a front yard that was beyond our expectations. They also removed a dilapidated brick sidewalk and installed a creative stone walkway that works harmoniously with Jeff's landscape design. He installed a temporary irrigation system that worked perfectly, then removed it at the end of the season after the plants were established.
>
> Appleseed had a history with this property from the previous owners, and Jeff impressed us with his knowledge of the original plantings that are now mature. He continues to do routine maintenance on the entire property. I have even stopped into his shop and asked for advice on plantings for other areas of the yard, and was provided with great recommendations.
>
> I would recommend Jeff and his crew at Appleseed to anyone. you couldn't ask for a more professional, courteous, knowledgeable landscape designer and team.

**★★★★ — lmsmedtech, Feb. 2014**

> My front yard was completely barren, nothing. I spoke with Jeff and he rendered a landscape plan that I could see on his iPad as well as a blue print. He did the installation as we agreed upon and I am very pleased with the outcome. The only negative would be that I thought it was overpriced.

**★★★★★ — Sam Smith, Feb. 2014**

> Working with Jeff Klingel is a joy due to his design ability, knowledge of our area and it's requirements and his ability to patiently listen to the client and filter their ideas into part of the solution. I would highly recommend him.

> Jeff and his crew were involved in our landscape from the building phase onward. They leveled the land and planted grass on the lot. Jeff planned the landscape and selected all of the plantings. Installation included a watering system for the major beds, a bluestone walkway and pre-post planting of all of the beds. Since the initial planting of the beds, Jeff and his crew have maintained the beds on a monthly basis. We are very pleased with the work and find the beds around the house to be attractive from every angle. Since our house has a lot of glass it was important to have the beds be attractive to the passing viewer but also attractive from the inside of the house.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Custom or commercial trellis?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Great looking and apparently sturdy trellis. Is it commercially available or was it custom built? If so, wood or synthetic material? Thanks.

A: Thanks for the note. The trellis is custom construction. We used pressure treated lumber, painted. Its been up for about 8 years and still looks great.
Allowing the lumber to dry a bit and using high quality paint keeps the finish much longer.
Good Luck!

**Q: Need Advice on 1 year old Bluestone Patio Flaking and Chipping** *(in Landscape Design)*

We had a new patio installed last year with PA bluestone (Cut Bluestone Patio MW Tudor Blend with 12x12, 12 x24, and 24x24 pieces with Polymeric HP & XP sand, etc.) and since last year, the bluestone is significantly chipping and flaking away in large chunks. The landscaping company, who's been in business numerous years, reported this is a first they've seen. They are not offering to replace at this time. I researched this for hours on the internet with no signs that is is a normal occurrence for bluestone & I haven't found information on this even occurring on rare occasions. I did see information on quality versus inferior stone, but nothing that says this could or would occur. I called a couple stone places and no one heard of this for bluestone. I took it into a local brick and stone company, that also reported he hasn't seen this before. He reported my product does look like PA bluestone.

The landscaping company consulted with the quarry representative who recommended the landscaping company power wash the chips off and seal afterwards, as this should help it stop. They power washed the patio to get rid of the flakes that are coming off in large chunks. Afterwards, it pretty much looks like a sunburnt patio, as you can see the areas where they sprayed the layers off. In addition, a novice must have sprayed it, as they left graffiti like marks in some places. Although the landscaping company denies this or doesn't address it at all. They now say we should seal it as the representative from where they bought this so called bluestone; I am not sealing as it looks terrible. It is still coming off in chunks. I took a picture of pieces I just got off the patio the other day. No force required for them to easily pop off.

Please advise. Has anyone heard of this type of occurrence for bluestone? No chemicals or products have been on this patio. I live in Virginia and our temps are mild overall.

I am in need of advise and feedback. The owner of the quarry where this product was purchased by the landscaping company sent us a letter and reported leading causes of this issues are salt for snow removal and animal waste. Salt has never hit this patio and we do have dogs, but they have never or would they ever urinate or defecate on our patio.

I think this needs replacing as it looks terrible and more importantly the integrity of the stone is impacted by continued chunks coming off and the power washing didn't help any with the lines the nozzle must have left on some areas.

A: I did have some partially undercover but it all disintegrated the same. No definitive conclusion has been made but my guess is that it’s a bad vein in the quarry or it’s drying out too quickly.

**Q: what do you call those purple flowers** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This is Allium giganteum 'Globe Master'
It works great with the Muhly grass planting. It comes up with foliage before the grass breaks dormancy and the foliage dies back back as the grass starts to fill in. The blooms add great whimsy to the contemporary home and landscape.
Thanks for asking.
