## Community Q&A

**Q: Has anyone seen these stools?!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I've been searching the Internet high and low for these exact counterstools. WITH arms! The author of this blog (ZDesign at Home- love her!) stated she found them at Home Goods but I can't find them anywhere. I've seen them without arms but I need arms!
Any of you experts out there seen these for sale?
TIA

A: Good Morning,

The Madeline Stool from restoration looks very close to this one. I think they are discontuning it because it has been on final sale.

Hope that helps!

**Q: Which fireplace design? Need to know today!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Trying to decide between these two designs. In the first design, we'd store firewood in the opening beneath the hearth. And wood mantel would be approx 8' 6" long.
In the second design, firewood would go in the openings on either side of the fireplace opening. Wood mantel approx 6' long. I'll post pics in comments of our inspiration for each. Please help!

A: Glad we could help! Post pictures when you are finished. We would love to see the end result!

**Q: Safety verses lake view** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Lake house in need of railings but don't want to block the view.

A: Good Afternoon,

One thing that is very popular in Orange County is doing clear fencing. This allows for very little view obstruction. However, depending on your climate this may not be an option for you. In addition, it may not go with the style of your house. You may want to look into other designs that are not as contemporary as the one pictured.

Good Luck!

**Q: Cost of Bathroom Designer** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello. What's the going rate for a bathroom designer? Kohler provides a new service. I'm looking for someone to take what we currently have and create our dream bathroom. We love to make a statement with a high end tile. Currently it feels like a lot of wasted space.

A: Hello Liz!
We normally charge hourly- gauging the amount of hours is difficult to do without discussing many details with you. However, we have done a few kitchens and bathrooms for cost plus. Meaning our fee is based on the cost of the job similar to many contractors. We charge this way because we do full drawings for contractors detailing the millwork, tile design etc. We turn out normally charging 20% of the whole job- including all work done by contractors and items purchased by the client.
We like this direction for a few reasons:
1\. The client is not concerned about calling us about helping through design problems because we are not charging hourly.
2\. If the job gets more complex it normally is being reflected in the overall costs. For example, if we need to specify specialty pull outs, research them and coordinate our drawings, the cost of the cost plus on the pull outs will cover our time.
3\. We believe the client and the design benefit from this. It allows us to help run the job with the GC and help with every detail needed.
Keep in mind, our fee is based on our area, expertise and the types of jobs we do. We have evaluated how our cost plus fee compares to our hourly and they are very close to each other. So on our jobs, where we are providing a full set of drawings and designing. We are about 20%.
Lastly, I am guessing the Kohler designers are not going to assist too much, if at all, with details that Kohler does not specialize in. Meaning, if you would like millwork that Kohler does not manufacture, they will not help you with those items.
Hopefully this helps!

**Q: Bar Countertop** *(in Photo Questions)*

Could you be so kind and tell me what this beautiful bar top is made from and what is it's color's name? Thank you!!

A: Hello!

The Countertop is a quartzite called Taj Mahal.

**Q: Help! Light cream color tile turned out to be pinkish.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are remodeling small guest bathroom. What I wanted to have is simple - sage color walls, gray/brown floor and cream tiles for the corner shower. Today my GC put the tiles on and it has light pinkish shade! It completely thrown away the design I had in mind. Is there anyway to help the situation? Make walls more gray? Change the light?

A: Good Afternoon,

Most likely your tile is turning "pinkish" because there is green in your wall color. Green and red are complimentary colors- meaning when placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those two colors. So, when you put some thing with a green tone next to something with a red or pink tone in it, those the red and the green will be brought out even more. One thing you can try is looking at different paint colors that have less green and see if that solves the problem. When looking at different paint options, make sure to look at the paint away from the current paint color. It helps if you can get a sample of the color and paint it on a piece of poster board with a 2" white border around it.

Another thing you can try is to change the bulbs in your lighting. Lighting can affect a color through Metamerism. Metamerism is a phenomenon that occurs when colors change according to how they are viewed in different lighting conditions. Color temperature is how we measure a light's color which is done is Kelvin ratings. A low kelvin rating will mean a warmer light and a high kelvin level will mean a cool light. For example, candle light is about 1800 Kelvin, Incandescent bulbs are 2700, halogen bulbs are around 3500, fluorescent bulbs are around 4500, and average daylight is around 5500. This information is relevant to your problems because you most likely have a warmer bulb in your lights now. If you do not have any LED bulbs in your fixtures, your bulbs are most likely 2700, or a warm white light. LED bulbs are available in a wide range of color temperatures compared to halogen, fluorescent and incandescent-all of which have a very small, if any range of color temperature. I would try switching to 3000 or 3500 LED bulbs and see how your tile looks and go from there. You will start to see how the coolness of the light versus the warmth affects the color and the tile and go from there. Keep in mind, if you change your bulb color, this will also affect your paint color and everything else in the room.

Without seeing your problem in person, we can only recommend what we commonly see in the field. Hopefully, one or both of these suggestions will help you! Take some before and after pictures and let us know how it goes!

Good Luck!
