> We had a great experience with Best Practice. We did a full remodel of our house with a $300k budget. BP understood our needs well and helped us rethink our house accordingly. Partway through the project, we had to take a step back and reconsider components of the project due to budgetary constraints. BP did a thoughtful review of all components and helped us identify what we should keep and cut from the project. BP participated in weekly meetings with us and our contractor to ensure the project stayed on track. They worked very well with our contractor. We are pleased with the outcome and would definitely work with BP in the future.

> Ian Butcher, Architect: he listens! We hired Ian to turn an old, shabby-chic barn into an art studio. We were sure someone would tell us to tear it down and start over. Ian, like us, saw the barn as an asset we could use. It was not an obstacle for him. Ian promptly drew up the most unique plan utilizing what was already there to minimize cost. He is creative, he is innovative, he is conscientious and, most importantly, has a beautiful design aesthetic which is the reason one hires and architect! We recommend him and his superb ability to see and resolve problems; and, to DESIGN.

> I'm an architectural photographer who has photographed many projects completed by Best Practice, in doing so I have gotten familiar with their work in detail. The folks at Best Practice really delve into the details, be they conceptual or architectural/design, and are attentive to all the elements of each project, from spacial planning to the finishes and custom fixtures and colors. Their approach is playful and inventive, while still thorough and grounded on many of the classic elements that make spaces work.

> Ian helped my husband and I design the remodel of our home. He created a look and feel for our house that was modern yet respected the original 100 year structure. His design incorporated architectural features through out that gave interest and were coherent to the overall look and feel. We enjoy our house everyday, it makes us happy.

## Selected projects

- [Rad Trad](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/rad-trad-pj-vj~7862626)
  - Location: Seattle, WA
  - Photos: 22
  - Description: Seeking to balance family life in Seattle with time spent on their working farm in the San Juan Islands, the owners of Rad Trad turned to Best Practice Architecture to design a right-sized home that met their needs without sacrificing style or function. The project transforms an existing urban infill site, introducing a new dwelling that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding neighborhood—a 1,315-square-foot home that embraces contemporary concepts and traditional styling. Prioritizing spati…
- [Chez Shay](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/chez-shay-pj-vj~7795789)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 25
  - Description: Best Practice worked closely with the Chez Shay clients to create a modern home sporting cool details and interesting spaces in the shell of a 1919 home. The couple and their young toddler loved the house, despite its ramshackle additions over the years and odd spaces with little natural light. Rather than tearing the home down, the design team leaned into the eccentricities of the house to bring forward its best qualities, creating a functional and livable home for family, gathering, working-fr…

  - Description: This Madison Park residence began its life as a floating home on Lake Union! It was transported and firmly affixed to the ground near the shore of Lake Washington, but we still like to think of it as a Boathouse. With a charming street presence, the design team crafted an open interior space with vaulted ceilings, new basement living spaces and a primary suite upstairs in the new addition. Contractor: Ainslie-Davis Construction Decorative Lighting: Inform Interiors Structural Engineer: Harriott…

  - Photos: 19
  - Description: Located on a leafy street in the Madrona neighborhood, a classic Seattle craftsman has been transformed into an expanded modern dwelling by adding a significant new volume to the rear of the house. As the design team explored options to add space, it became clear that a larger addition in the rear of the house would maintain both the trees and the home’s classic character while providing opportunities for private and covered outdoor spaces in the backyard. Cantilevering off the South East corner…

  - Description: Big Mouth House is a small multi-family project developed collaboratively between three architects and friends working together. Big Mouth House received it’s namesake when a close friend observed the construction and exclaimed that house resembled Japan’s beloved Domo mascot then promptly crafted this endearing collage. Each unit was carefully considered as a flexible urban home with a studio space on the lower level ADU that could be used as an income generator for the owners and roof deck up…

  - Description: Enchanted by the Tieton landscape of endless apple fields, craggy mountains and blush-colored sunsets, our client was compelled to purchase a decommissioned apple warehouse nestled among the orchards and farms for the perfect respite and space to create. The large warehouse provided all the room for creative industry, and an 80’s camp trailer was stationed inside to provide accommodations and basic needs. Ultimately, our client envisioned a modest residence to compliment the warehouse for year-r…

  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: A true collaboration between a mother and her daughters, Lil Shingle is an example of an “age-in-place” home that celebrates the contributions of family members and makes a home for family gathering. Architecture by middle daughter (and Best Practice Principal), stained glass by youngest daughter (Unique Art Glass) and art/photography by the eldest daughter give this house a heart. Modest moves and cleverly organized spaces make the home manageable on one level for the owner, with easy access fr…
- [Aspen Leaf Ranch](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/aspen-leaf-ranch-pj-vj~7586515)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 21
  - Description: Named for the original homestead, the Aspen Leaf Ranch blends early ranch history with modern sensibility. The owner, an outdoorsman and native plant enthusiast, and former project manager of notable Seattle buildings (including the Olympic Sculpture Park and the Bullitt Center), tasked Best Practice Architecture with designing a modest yet comfortable home reflective of valley cabins and farmsteads. He desired a small home that was ‘light on the land’, yet flexible enough to accommodate visitin…
- [Bread and Butter](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/bread-and-butter-pj-vj~7533606)
  - Location: Seattle, WA
  - Photos: 18
  - Description: Located in Seattle’s picturesque Phinney Ridge neighborhood, Bread & Butter is the culmination of a fourteen-year relationship between Julie and Chris Lubke and Best Practice Architecture. It began in 2009 when the young couple, both practicing structural engineers, purchased a craftsman-style house in their dream neighborhood. The new space was just steps away from sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains but was poorly updated over the years; stripped of its original charm. Despite favoring con…

  - Description: When a young family outgrew their beloved 1907 cottage, they entrusted Best Practice Architecture to reimagine the 16-and-a-half-foot-wide two-story home as a functional, modern, and exquisitely detailed living space. Surrounded by old-growth trees in Seattle’s Phinney Ridge neighborhood, the cozy gambrel roof dwelling is dubbed “Phinney Mini” for its compact footprint and idyllic location.
