A: I am happy to help. Have a lovely night. **Q: Backsplash** *(in Photo Questions)* Where did you purchase the backsplash? A: The tile for the back splash was purchased through three different company's. I designed it myself then specified the tiles. This was a few years back...I'm not sure any of the tile is still available since tile products our phased out every couple years. I'd have to look into it. It is often easier to try to find products that carry the essence of a design you like. **Q: Houzz inspiration gone wrong... $10,000 wrong.** *(in Design Dilemma)* We recently renovated our master bathroom, and I found inspiration from a Houzz picture (picture attached). My house is modern with a lot of stonewok throughout- I thought this stone floor would compliment the style of my house. My contractor warned me that he knew no one who had done anything like this, but I decided to take a "design risk" because I thought it would end up fabulous and different. I was wrong. What we ended up with was a patio floor on the inside of our house (2nd picture attached) . When the concrete was poured in between the stones, it took on a dirty and dull look. To pull this floor out, the entire bathroom needs to be "gutted"- everything removed so they can demolish it. This will add $6,000 to the cost of what we have already paid for this floor, so I estimate it to end up being around $10,000. I should have gone with the Ann Sacks tile I originally loved! My questions: Do you see something I can do to make this floor better? Has anyone ever painted over slate and concrete? Or is there another treatment you think would work? Just want to explore all options before spending more $$ and I definitely don't want to "throw good money at bad". Thanks for any advice! A: I am so sorry. I can totally see why you wanted this look. It is very cool. But...Okay! so I can't help but say this....this is why you'd hire a designer...especially one who deeply understands color, harmony & scale. An inspiration photo is not enough & most contractors are rarely very detail oriented. I honestly think you contractor dropped the ball big time for many reasons. Ive worked with all kinds & most of them I would never take my eyes off them except for a rare few. There is more than one mistake going on here...they were set wrong, the scale for your bathroom is wrong, there is not enough variety in the shapes & the colors in no way replicate your inspiration photograph. A trained experienced interior designer would have know that better than anyone else. I am sorry, if this sound harsh but I get hired to fix things more often than I should. I would rather to get hired to help people to get it right in the first place. It seems so wasteful. I honestly think websites, tv are misleading folks to think they can design their home by themselves off inspiration photos if they have not had the right training...but so many are selling this idea that people can. On some levels they can. Inspiration photos are just a reference that interior designers use to guide their clients in the process, but the finished result must be entirely designed around each clients individual circumstances. I get that many clients cant afford to pay a designer throughout the whole process...that is why in my practice I will do package deals where I zero in on helping them with the material & design details leaving them with all the information needed for their contractor to do the work. You don't actually save money in the end when you don't utilize the guidance that is available. I am also going to say & this is in general because we designers get pelted with all kinds of questions & descriptions....just telling someone about your space & asking for advice doesn't work either. I know this platform has come to that, lots of free advice from designers...but no designer knows for sure about anything unless they are physically in the space. Not all recommendations are entirely accurate otherwise. Okay enough being on my soapbox. I am wondering if there is a way it could be ground down? If you have something like a stone...it would have to be real stone for strength... mosiac put down...which is a little thinner maybe you can reface it. There are some pebble style ones too that Daltile sells that are split so they are flat...you would just have to somehow get rid of enough your thickness so it wouldn't mean changing as many things like door jams & such.
