> We have worked with Tom of McElroy Architecture on two kitchen renovations. His attention to detail and understanding of client needs is extraordinary. Both collaborations turned out to be timeless, unique spaces that are both functional and beautiful. His work undoubtedly exceeds client expectations with every project. We love working with Tom and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a top-notch architect.

**★★★★★ — Quantum Windows & Doors, March 2014**

> Tom McElroy chose our products to incorporate into his San Francisco Bungalow Renovation (http://mcelroyarch.com/?page\_id=1335), and we at Quantum couldn't be more humbled. Our windows and doors look stunning and we are very grateful to have been specified!

 - Description: This house was built in 1959 with a turquoise kitchen and pink bathroom. Unfortunately it had been neglected for decades and needed to be fully remodeled to the studs. Redrawing the plan and removing walls opened up the living spaces; larger windows added light throughout. A reworked stair with doors at the landing open out to the garden that was formerly accessible only from the garage. We converted one of three garage spaces to create a guest bedroom suite, office and main entry. The new windo…

 - Location: San Francisco, CA

 - Description: This project involved the full remodel of a modest Victorian house in a tight urban setting. The existing house had minimal windows, small rooms and a vaguely railroad floor plan. We created two entertaining zones at each end of the house with enlarged bedrooms and an office in the middle. The rear zone has a direct connection to a walled courtyard that serves as an extension of the living space through a row of doors and continuous flooring from inside out. Banks of windows, updated materials a…

 - Description: This remodel involved updating a stuffy top floor master bedroom and bathroom suite that had only one window – in the bathroom. The challenge to gain height and pick up expansive views without increasing the building envelope was solved by carving away part of the existing roof and eave space. This created a new wall high enough for view windows and the vanity. As a bonus the owners gained a small roof perch accessed from a large casement window. An existing (windowless) dormer was extended to t…

 - Description: This duplex apartment sits high above its neighbors affording panoramic views of San Francisco. An extensive remodel created brighter connections and larger rooms to improve the layout. The living spaces were placed on the top floor with vaulted ceilings to enhance the lofty experience. A low dormer was removed to create an outdoor deck, and replaced with a wall of doors and windows facing the view.

 - Description: Having been uninhabited for 30 years, this building of (4) apartments was badly in need of improvement. The building was remodeled down to the studs. Clean lines of the original mid-century units were refreshed in a modern way. We opened up the living areas by removing walls and added sliding doors to decks with glass railings and sweeping views of San Francisco.

 - Description: This apartment on an urban corner was previously a series of shadowy rooms built in the 1890s. A full remodel with modifications to the plan and a new wall of windows in the kitchen capture and fill the rooms with light. The finishes reflect modern living with toned-down accents of the building’s history. A sidewalk landscaping planter added a spot of green at the street entry.

## Community Q&A

**Q: cabinet** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the wood type on the upper cabinets? NIce soft grain and color. Thanks.

A: This is a walnut veneer from Henrybuilt.

**Q: Using white all white windows but having black sliding patio door.** *(in Building a Home)*

We have an open floorplan. The living room in the main floor and white windows. Basement also has quite a few windows and they are all white.

I just placed an order for windows and our big patio sliding doors. At first I did all white incl sliding doors but then changed the sliding doors to black upon recommendation from interior designer.

I am still nervous about this change. I think my builder will be totally upset if i change the order again and it might be too late to change (ordered beg of this week).

Do you think it will look too awkward?

A: correct; the black slider will be on a black-painted wing of the house. the rest of the house is painted white and will have black-painted windows on it; so all windows / slider are black but house has 2 colors on wall areas.
I think white windows on black walls pop a lot more (and to me look like they could be vinyl!) and I prefer black windows on a white wall if I'm going to mix anything.
If I have 2 things next to each other on the same wall I would usually not mix colors; like a black door next to a white window.

**Q: Lovely home! Can you please provide the details for the wall tile?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: the wall tile is porcelain

**Q: Tile** *(in Photo Questions)*

There are so many gorgeous tiles used in this project of yours. Just amazing work.

A: thank you!

**Q: What's the ceiling height in the kitchen/family room?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: 9' in the kitchen and 10' in the family room beyond

**Q: Size of wet room** *(in Photo Questions)*

we don't have a lot of room to work with and this size looks like it might work, could you tell me the measurements and would a 32or 36 inch tub still work in here . Thank you. Very creative.

A: the tub in this is 27" wide; the shower is 36" wide. thanks for checking it out!
