**Q: How many layers of topcoat are really necessary?** *(in Woodworking)*

Working on an interior door project, wondering if three layers of topcoat is really necessary.  This will be interior closet door, far enough away from windows that there is virtually zero chance of any water hitting the door.  I did do all the window trim in three coats, I figured another layer of protection if rain splash does hit the trim (it happens...), but the door - ? 
I used General Finishes water-based wood stain, and the topcoat is High Performance water-based topcoat in satin.  
What do you think -- two coats or three?

ETA:  If it matters, the wood is red oak.

A: We always apply a minimum of 3 coats. 2 coats may get you enough coverage for protection but the 3rd coats always comes out so much smoother!

**Q: Any brand of add-in rollout shelves better/worse???** *(in Building a Home)*

We are having house built—production, not custom. There are bottom cabinets vs drawers. Want to add roll-out shelves after market. Any particular brand that is better/worse? How tall should be sides be? Had cabs w/roll out shelves in another kitchen and they worked fine but kitchen was more custom in that house.

The cabinets in new house are Timberlake Sonoma Linen—an upgrade over builder standard, but right now I don’t remember if the interior is linen or natural. I added drawers under the electric cooktop and a bank of 3 drawers on sink island to hold dishes (vs upper cabinets) and flatware.
I know outfitting with roll out shelves is little more clunky than just drawers but didn’t want to pay for upgrade.

A: I agree with  chicagoans. If your pricing after market pull-outs, I would look into rev-a-shelf we have always been happy with their products. We are a cabinet shop and have installed tons of pull-outs. I would be very surprised if there is a significant savings vs having drawer base cabinets installed.

**Q: How to design asymmetrical built ins around fireplace** *(in Woodworking)*

Hello all!
We just moved into our new home (traditional style but built in 2004), and we lack storage and display space in the living room.  There are two alcoves flanking the fireplace where we want to add built in bookshelves and cabinets with doors below, but the walls are different widths AND one side has a bump-out space, probably due to a chase in that corner.

How would you design the built ins to look good -- we're not looking for symmetry here, just a way to perhaps mask the differences a bit to fool the eye.  The wall sconces are staying, so they'll be about 60" high.  Left side is 39" wide; right side is 51" wide, with the bump out part being 17" of that.

Once built ins are done, we'll change out the decor to go with the new sofa.  Any ideas much appreciated!  Thank you!

A: If the sconces are staying, I agree with housegal200. Some simple built-in base cabinets with a counter will work well. The different widths aren't a problem. As  RappArchitecture mentioned, it adds some visual interest. The bump out shouldn't present a problem either. The counter will be scribed around it to fit the wall.

**Q: Help facelift this dated kitchen** *(in Home Decorating)*

Appreciate any ideas or suggestions to facelift the kitchen. (Includes room pics to give you a sense of the space). 
Plan is to make that 2 level countertop to Maybe where the kitchen desk is, was thinking of something like this. But without the wall on the left of it. It won’t be framed in like in the photo 1 level. Change out countertop for white with gold veining quartz and take out the sink in the island so the stone is more visible. Sand and paint the cabinets white including pantry door and fridge panels (not a fan of the brown - it closes up the space). 
Open to other suggestions. We don’t use the kitchen desk area and were thinking of taking down those cabinets and doing a nook - something like the last pic uploaded.

A: Great, if they are taking the doors offsite they'll likely be spraying with a durable coating. What color are you going to?

How do I fix this molding?

A: I agree, no sign of a leak in the picture. The ranch baseboard appears to end with a square cut and not a mitered corner. Which ever molding you decide to continue, the existing ranch baseboard pictured will have to be removed and replaced with one mitered for the corner.

**Q: How do I purchase something such as what is in this picture** *(in Photo Questions)*

Are these available in different sizes?  I am looking at the Bookcase/lower door units to the right in this picture.  I have a specific
wall in my basement family room that I am trying to find something just like this.  Thank you.
