Joanna Shirin, ASID is an internationally known Interior Designer, Artist, Photographer and the founder of Joanna Shirin Design Studios, Inc. She hails from the colorful city of Riga, Latvia: “Living in Riga as a child was like living in a fairy tale, with its cobblestone streets, the incredibly intricate ornate awnings denoting various shops, the modern buildings somehow blending into to centuries-old stone and brick houses and churches. I wanted always to learn how to paint if only so I could capture all these places, that even then I knew were somehow unique, and full of stories…”

She had always gravitated to the arts, and so unsurprisingly graduated from the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts, just prior to moving to New York City over 30 years ago now, for good. Her love for capturing the stories of places and people who occupied them led her to pursue a BFA in Interior Design from Parsons School of Design.

Joanna started a boutique design firm to help cater to those who truly appreciate that interiors of the spaces they live in are a reflection of so many unique stories and events, past, present and future…

“Our goal is always to tell these stories through the interiors. If a story calls for a particular piece of furniture that simply doesn’t exist, we will design one and have it made to fit that one unique personality of the one space in the world where that piece would be the most natural thing.”

No matter what styles a residence calls for, it’s the incessant search for the harmony of the space and its occupants that drives us. “There is a tremendous sense of fulfillment in being able to do that…”

> Joanna’s work is timeless and elegant. She can easily adapt to her clients preferences for color and interior design style. She is very organized and motivated which sets her aside from her peers in that she combines a unique ability to be creative and thorough.

**★★★★★ — Ann Ziff, Aug. 2016**

> I worked with Joanna Shirin for over 10 years full-time. She was very helpful in organizing significant projects in different parts of the country for me. Her attention to detail, emphasis on high quality, and keen eye for high-end design makes her a valuable asset on any project she undertakes. She identified unique selections of materials and fabrics and had a truly creative yet practical approach to all aspects of design, layout, furnishings, and accessories. I relied on Joanna’s instincts in finding good solutions when problems arose, and managing time and budgets effectively. She was a pleasure to work with and I would not hesitate to recommend her services.

> We've worked with Joanna several times over the past 15 or so years and enjoy her work so much. When we first worked with her our projects were very small, and still, she took the time and gave us the same attention and care she does her larger clients. (Much larger clients!)
>
> Now, finally, we're about to break ground on a new home and Joanna will be involved all the way through the process. We've looked forward to this for a long time and can't wait to see what she does with it.

> Two years ago I inherited my parents mountain retreat and though I loved them dearly the same cannot be said for my feelings toward how they decorated and furnished their house.
> Last May I hired Joanna after seeing how she transformed a friend's duplex in the city.
> I am thrilled that the inside of my home now seems to reflect and extend the magnificent lakefront vistas that inspired the house's original architecture.
> I can't praise Joanna's talents enough: her ability to translate my ethereal visions into concrete executions was both fun and inspiring.

> "Joanna did a wonderful job with our kitchen / dining room renovation project. We wanted the finished space to be updated, open and more cohesive with the dining room and the rest of the house. We also were hoping to have a kitchen space that will allow us to interact with our guests while being in the kitchen. The new layout, appliances and materials - all, are what we have hoped for and more!"

> We have been working with Joanna for the past 10 years and it always has been outstanding! This time we needed help with a renovation of our country home. Joanna and her team did an amazing job on design, sourcing of materials and furnishings as well as helping us with several important art pieces. Her sophisticated sense of style, color and knowledge of art and antiques gives each project a very unique feel that is full of comfort...We LOVE our home!

> Joanna Shirin designed our living room. I don't have enough good words to desribe her services. She did an excellent job not only on design part, but also helped us to purchase furnishings at the best possible price. Our living room looks upscale, tasteful and it is very functional too. Project was finished on time. Our living room has unique and ellegant look now which makes our house special and different. I would recommend Joanna Shirin Design Studios to anyone: from very upscale large projects to smaller projects concentrating on one room like ours. Very happy and will use her services again in the future.

> Joanna is awesome. Easy to work with, had great ideas and understands what you want to achieve. We recently had a few renovation projects with Joanna. We needed to find a new look to some parts of our house – bedrooms, dining room. I was unsure of everything – colors, fabrics, accessories. Joanna had great ideas and her sense of color and style is impeccable. She was patient and worked with us on each detail until we feel comfortable about the new look. I was doubting at first the color scheme she found for our sons bedrooms but the result was above all my expectations. Color worked together with furniture and rugs and just connected everything. She helped us to re-use our existing items and helped to find some new accessories that dramatically changed the design and feel of the rooms. The end result was spectacular.
> Highly recommend.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Planning a tv wall** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are building a new house. These pictures are from the model home and other marketing material. We will not have a fireplace but our tv will go on that wall. That far wall is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door.

I am thinking of using a floating cabinet a few inches above the floor with the tv mounted above at eye level and a sound bar in between. Our ceiling will be vaulted. It is 9' at this wall then goes up from there.

I do not like the idea of the tv being the focal point when you walk into the house and I'm not even sure if it will be high enough to be seen. But then there is this big blank wall! Would it be ok, design wise, to mount a painting above the tv perhaps with a mantel or shelf between the two? I have not seen any pictures of a wall like that.

A: A large art work or decorative element would work the best on that wall. If you upload an image of your floor plan with existing furniture we can make a recommendation for a TV placement.

**Q: Paint Color?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I was on here a couple of weeks ago asking about paint color, but since then our ottoman fabric decision was made and we ordered two of them (30"x22" each). Prior to selecting our ottoman fabric someone on here suggested Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter. We like that color a lot, but I just want to make sure, would that still look nice in light of our ottoman selection?
If there's perhaps something more fitting that we're overlooking please feel free to include that as well.
For reference, we bought a couch and loveseat in this fabric:

The reddish orange and white fabric in the forefront is the ottoman fabric. The paisley looking swatch is the pillow fabric we chose, but we are very open to going a different route on the pillow front if things just don't mesh right. Note: The chair pictured there is not the style we're buying.

Thanks for your input.

A: I have never seen a successful execution of a color scheme, where any work with colors is done through photographs or computer. The reason being - distortion of color. It's hard to recommend a paint color this way. I guess being a classically trained artist we are pretty particular when it comes to color schemes, paints... There are so many factors to consider: Hue of color, it's value, how the light is traveling through the particular space...Undertones of paints, reflections...How a certain color of paint or upholstery looks with natural light or artificial (kind of bulbs used in lighting in ones residence) and so on...
We always schedule a separate session just for paint color selection when all the other material samples are present in the space.
We design and install long distance projects all the time but, again, we would need to have all your samples to be shipped to us to be able to specify the colors and / or suggest best upholstery options...
Or you might consider hiring a designer in your area just for color selection. It will be easy since you already have some fabrics and/ or materials on hand.

Good luck!

**Q: Foyer Entry Help please!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have this large wall as you enter the home. I was considering a very narrow lucite waterfall table with 2 narrow paintings above it. I have 11 ft ceilings and the width of this wall is 120 inches from the light switch to the edge of my dining room wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated

A: I would suggest a small profile console table with two table lamps and a mirror between the lamps. Mirror will open up the narrow foyer ...The other option can be to turn that wall into a gallery wall to feature your art and photo collection...best of luck!

**Q: POLL: favorite HGTV show** *(in Polls)*

What's you favorite HGTV show?

A: Real Designing Women!

**Q: where can I get this chair?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This chair is from client's private collection

**Q: What to do with built-in entertainment center** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hey everyone,

Wanted to pick some people's creative brains to see what kind of ideas may come from this. I just purchased this home and they had large built-in entertainment center built into the wall in the main family room. Unfortunately it was made for an older tube TV and doesn't fit the flat screen TVs I'm looking at. The unit itself is nice and in very nice condition so my first hopeful idea is to modify the current design. Worse case, I remove it, but I'd prefer that to be the last option due to the patch up work then needed (carpet, walls, ceiling, paint, etc.). There is wiring already set for a TV (as you can see, that's a coax line coming from the wall), and the two furthest left/ride rectangles has speaker cable coming from it. I'm an audio nerd so I will eventually bring some hi-fi setup into this room but that's not important currently and is slated for the future.

I'm planning to put a 65" TV in this setup, 55" at the smallest. The entire length of this entertainment center is about (158 inches) and its height is about (95 inches). The center opening is about (40 inches) wide and about (31 inches) tall, and 50 inches diagonally.

I'm trying to avoid mounting the TV in the back of the opening and having it in-front of the entertainment center, I personally have never been a big fan of that, especially if the TV is large it can look a little off.

Photo attached of what this setup looks like, ignore the objects on it, just temporary moving storage :)

A: Agree with above comments-modify the Millwork to accommodate your tv size, prime and paint with BM off white color w satin finish. This will significantly improve the overall look of the built in, making it more current! Good luck!
