**Q: Wanting to gut my kitchen...** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I would like to "redesign" my kitchen. I want to open it up by doing away with the pennisula and including a floating island, get rid of the area above the cabinets and..???? Need input because hubs & I can't seem to get on the same page.  Oh yeah, would like to keep the cost under $12K!

A: There're are a lot of great suggestions and I would agree with the comments regarding getting a more realistic budget if you want granite, new appliances, cabinetry, lighting (which I recommend,) backsplash, plumbing fixtures etc. Its important to avoid sacrificing quality for a quick cheaper fix. This only causes aggravation along with time and money. 

From what I can tell your back wall measures 11' and the side walls measure about 8' appx, is that correct? 
If so I would suggest you consider doing a number of things assuming the peninsula is removed. 

1\. Remove the range  wall all together creating a L shape kitchen 
2\. Move the dishwasher next to the sink in the new back wall 
3\. Use a 30" sink base cabinet which provides another 6"
4\. Purchase  a counter depth refrigerator 
5\. Place your fridge at the very end  which will fix your table issue 
6\.  Order 2  end panels matching your cabinets for each side of the fridge to create a built in fridge look. Please make sure you order panels that will extend to the the edge of the fridge door so the sides of the fridge are completely hidden.
7\. Now you have space for a permanent 4' island with an overhang you may be able to sit 2 people. 
8\. Merillat cabinets are a fantastic and inexpensive. I use them for my budget conscious clients and are guaranteed for x amount of years depending on which cabinets you order. 
9\. I recommend installing recessed lighting and don't forget under cabinet lighting. 
10\. Install a single bowl stainless sink, don't cheap out on the kitchen sink and remember the lower the gauge the better the quality stainless. It will be the most used product in the kitchen.  
11\. Use a quality faucet for the same reasons. 
12\. A backsplash can always be added down the road. 

Hope this helps, you will happy you spent a  little extra in the long run and may be able to stay close to your budget if you do your homework. Ask friends for electricians, and you want to find a finishing carpenter. The plumbing is pretty straight forward and if you have a gas range he can move the line. This plan can be of course swapped with the opposite wall If you prefer.. Good luck & if you live in Chicago feel free to contact me.
