Kathy Knack loves her profession and it shows. Her innate sensibilities, creativity and style come through in each and every project. With 28 years in the interior design industry in the Hampton Roads area, she has seen trends come and go…but the one that remains constant in her designs is the classic and timeless look. Incorporating her clients’ antiques, collections or artwork into their environments, making them fresh and “new” again is her signature.

Kathy’s blend of classic timeless furnishings upholstered in fresh fabrics, coupled with the unexpected contemporary artwork, or an edgy accent table, textured walls, or interesting lighting creates the interest in an environment. Never stuffy or predictable, Kathy’s designs are unique to each client. She listens first to the client’s visions, asks questions and then meticulously plans a design that will exceed the customer’s initial vision. “Listening to the customer is critical. And sometimes, it’s not what the customer says, but what he isn’t saying that is more important”. Her abilities to distinguish between the two are what set her apart.

Working with architects, builders, and tradesmen, Kathy looks to develop a partnership with them on each design project. Her philosophy is where there is a strong “team relationship” between the architect, contractor, interior designer, and the client, the outcome exceeds the client’s expectations. “The client is happy and we are happy!”

Located in the historic Ghent section of Norfolk, her design studio, is filled with the latest fabrics, wallpapers and trim books. Her retail showroom, displaying home furnishings and accessories available for purchase, reflects Kathy’s the sense of style and the range of products she offers.

Just as she uses her interior design skills with passion on every project, big or small, Kathy also takes time to indulge in her second passion…horses! “Working with horses reinforces the skills I use every day in my profession… creativity, communication, patience, and observation. Plus …horses are the best stress relievers after a hectic day”. Horses need comfort…just like humans! Kathy takes what she learns from both passions, and applies those skills when designing comfortable, classic and elegant interiors for her clients.

With her passion, creativity, and resources she has at her finger tips, interior designer, Kathy Knack can create a unique and personal interior design plan to fit one’s lifestyle, taste and budget.

> I have worked with Kathy Knack over many years and have always been impressed with her professionalism and great ideas. I just completed a decorating project wth her and I am so pleased with the outcome. Not only does Kathy have great ideas and wonderful sense of color but she hires the most able and courteous workmen I have ever had contact with. I don't hesitate to recommend her for any decorating jobs and will certainly use her myself for future projects.

> Kathy's designs to remodel our kitchen and great room have changed our house into a beautifully decorated home. Her knowledge of colors textures etc. have challenged us to think outside the box and every idea has worked out wonderfully. We have since redecorated our dining room and are in the process of planning our master bedroom and bathroom remodel. We loved working with Kathy and enjoyed her Knack Attack!

> I hired Kathy to help design a small farmhouse I recently renovated. I am so glad I contacted her early in the project, because her ideas translated into some very practical changes before the interior walls were up. With her flair for design we turned what would have been a very pedestrian living room, master bedroom and bath into beautiful spaces that I love spending time in. The furnishings KKID provided were the look and feel I wanted, and more importantly the right scale for my living space.
> I would highly recommend Kathy Knack for any room or home renovation.

**★★★★★ — Jon Becker, March 2017**

> We first worked with Kathy when we were building a new home. She learned our particular design preference and helped with everything from woodwork , cabinets, lighting, floors and obviously painting and furniture. She pulled everything together and worked with the various subcontractors. She is amazing. We have worked with her on an addition and other redecorating projects. We highly recommend her.

> I found a winner in Kathy Knack! I have worked with other interior designers and was never satisfied until I met Kathy. She has done multiple projects for me but she really didn't do them for me she did them WITH me. She is like hiring an experienced, knowledgeable, professional friend who has the wonderful ability to work with her clients and contractors in a harmonious way. She will deliver a gorgeous product that you will look at and feel like it reflects your tastes and not your designers. Through a 12 year period Kathy has redecorated my entire 6,000 sq. ft. house, she has overseen the complete renovation of an 1895 row house, and the complete renovation of the downstairs of my home. Two of these projects were difficult remodels that included everything from floor planning, to kitchen design, to electrical (placement of outlets), to lighting, space planning for furniture and draperies, location of light switches and heating and cooling vents. It also included all the interior finishes and furnishings including fabrics, custom furniture and window treatments. She is excellent with color and very detailed! She is able to work with all age groups and stages of life, decorating styles and budgets. My young adult children have used her services to help make their first homes have a more polished look while on a budget. Kathy Knack is an amazingly talented interior designer and I would not do a project large or small without her!

> Kathy has been working with us for almost 20 years. The results speak for themserlves. We did one room a year until the house was comp\[leted from top to bottom. This summer we suffered extensive damage from a roof leak and I called Kathy immediatrely. She worked with our insurance company, created a re-decoration plan with updated twists on what we liked about the previous decor, and arranged for all contractors. Kathy listens and creates designs that are both functional and viaually impactful. She is a pro who knows her customers, suppliers, contractors, and resources.

**★★★★★ — bdkincaid, Aug. 2014**

> Kathy has great ideas. She helped us renovate our family room which had paneling and wall to wall carpet. She suggested preparing the paneling for grasscloth wallpaper and replacing the carpet with hardwood flooring. She also suggested facing our brick fireplace with natural stone. In addition we closed in a set of patio doors with a triple window, and replaced all other doors and windows which gave the room a more sophisticated appearance. Her assistance in selecting fabrics and rugs was invaluable. She has exquisite taste, a great sense of humor and unlimited patience. Her "Knack Attack" added to the ambiance of the room with selections of lamps, pillows and occasional tables. She is the best!!

**★★★★★ — Jackson Andrews Building + Design, Aug. 2014**

> Your design/building team is not complete without Kathy Knack! She is excellent at listening and partnering with her clients to help transform a space. As a builder, everyone on my team loves having Kathy on the job site! Her desire to provide her clients with the utmost care, service, and respect is contagious. I believe the design and building process should always be creative, fun, and exciting, which is exactly why I would give Kathy Knack Interior Designs Inc my highest recommendation!

**Comment from Kathy Knack Interior Designs Inc:**

> Thanks Jackson ! We do have lots fun and laughs when we work together! Your team approach, listening to everyone's ideas/suggestions and incorporating them, when possible, in the project is what makes the client's project go from ordinary to extraordinary!

**★★★★★ — Mike Simon Construction Corp, Aug. 2014**

> Kathy has great taste and is able to design around the client's needs and style. Every job of Kathy's truly reflects the homeowner's style, not her own. She pays attention to detail and is always accessible. We have worked on multiple projects with Kathy and always find her a pleasure to work with!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Can you please tell what stone is used for fireplace?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The stone is a dry stacked stone granite I found at my local marble/ granite vendor in Norfolk Va

**Q: Help me pick a mirror for my powder bath** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am stuck. What shape and color mirror would you put in this powder bath?
1\. Rectangle or Oval
2\. Frame or no frame
3\. If I use a frame, would I match the gold sconces or the bronze faucets?
The space is 28.5" wide between the 2 boxes and 54 " high from countertop to ceiling.
The Marble is white with grey veining (statuary).
Thanks in advance!

A: Definitely a mirror with shape...oval is perfect. Since everything around the mirror area is a rectangle...sink/ light fixtures etc. it would be good to breakup the monotony of all the "right angles" with a soft oval or fluid shape. It will soften this "hard looking" area. A Venetian mirror would look fabulous here....and be a juxtaposition to the contemporary look as well as unexpected. Also, you wouldn't need to worry about frame color.

**Q: building a house need help with a lot!!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Please recommend 1 thing that I absolutely need to have in my house> any help is greatly appreciated

A: Find an interior designer to help you sort through the gazillion ideas and products out there. With a trusted designer who listens to what you want on board, you will get the finished product you want. Better yet, assembling a good communicative team of contractor, designer and homeowner your finished home will be better than you ever dreamed it could be!! Good luck!!

**Q: .** *(in Photo Questions)*

paint color please!!

A: This color is from the Sherwin Williams / Duron collection "Washington's Mount Vermon Historic Colors".

**Q: Ceiling height** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the ceiling height, who crafted the mantel and what is the color?
Thanks

A: Christopher,
The ceiling height in this room is 14 ft. This is a historic home built in 1792 and is on the National Historic Register. It is privately owned. The dining room is the original. The moldings and carvings throughout are original. It is all hand-carved wood panelling. It is thought the center panel area could have been a painted mural scene during the 18th century but there is no concrete documentation on this. The current owners selected the colors ( there are 2) from Sherwin-William/ Duron's George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate color palette. The dining table is of the period and dates back to 1774 and the sideboard is attributed to American cabinet maker, Thomas Seymour, is circa 1775 , both which I located for the clients.

**Q: What colour is used on the wall panels?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Gorgeous colour!

A: It is 2 color combination from Duron/ Sherwin Wiiliams "George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate" color. The fireplacehas more of a green value while the remaining 2 walls have a more "tropical" aqua feel. Thanks for the inquiry!
