**★★★★★ — mfbroenen, April 2024**

> I had used Slaughterbeck Floors 3 times since 1990, so I knew the quality of their work and I trust them completely.
> After a full home remodel, completed in November 2023, I noticed that the company hired by my contractor to refinish my 80 year old oak floors did an awful job, almost ruining the wood. There were ripples on the floors throughout the house, sanding circle scuffs at the doorways, and holes and flaws pretty much everywhere that had not been filled. In addition, there were gouges in the kitchen area where the workers had dragged appliances into place. It was a mess.
> I called Slaughterbeck and Paul came out to access the issues and agreed to take on this very challenging "fix" job. He put one of his best guys on the job which I appreciated so much.
> Dominic was AMAZING! He turned a really bad situation into a beautiful floor. His expertise was evident in every aspect of his approach. From educating me about the issues he saw, proposing solutions to fix the issues, and communicating with me through the entire process. The result was incredible. I am so happy with the result and with the experience I've had with Slaughterbeck every step of the way. Fantastic customer service, knowledgeable and talented staff, and craftsmen who really care about getting it right.
> Thank you to the entire company for helping me with a really difficult issue.

> Showed up on time. Were professional in every way while they were in my house. Did a good job on promised schedule at a reasonable price.
>
> They refinished the oak floors that had been under carpeting for 50 years. My wife is thrilled with the results.
>
> Note: We are about to gut our kitchen and I intend to have Slaughterbeck install new floors as part of the makeover. Can't give greater praise than to hire them for another job.

**★★★★★ — Kimberly Schmidt, Aug. 2015**

> We looked at 6 or 7 other flooring places, and were most impressed by Slaughterbeck's showroom. They have a fantastic selection, and their staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
> They were able to install our carpet and wood flooring earlier than expected, and their installation crew for both was fantastic. I have done several remodeling projects, and I am hard to please, but I will use Slaughterbeck Floors for all of our future flooring projects, and continue to highly recommend them!

> Recommended by our designer, Joan was very knowledgeable and informed us of requirements for having a new, beautiful wood floor installed over a slab surface. They installed a gorgeous, engineered wood throughout our home and bedroom carpet we requested. Maybe not the cheapest but we got a solid, quality job. "You get what you pay for..." Would definitely recommend to others.

> Loved working with slaughterbeck on my bedroom carpet--just waiting until I have budget to hire them for hardwood in the living room!

**★★★★★ — Jim Heintz, March 2014**

> Joan and crew are wonderful to work with. We love our hardwood floors. We decided to stay pretty traditional (red oak), but we had a couple places that needed accent strips. Joan helped us deal with a tricky step down into the living room that could be easily missed because of the line of sight brought your eye to the back yard. She came up with a Brazilian hardwood (I do not remember the species) that made the step much more noticeable and helped us to make sure guests would not trip or fall down the step.
> She incorporated the same wood around the brick fireplace as a visual barrier before the slightly elevated red bricks. She suggested it would help act as reminder to not stub your toes in the mornings. She was right: so far no toe stubs!!
> The floors look great to this day in spite of us getting a Chocolate Lab pup!!
> Thanks Joan!

**★★★★★ — kschober, Dec. 2013**

> Slaughterbeck Floors is a great place to buy and have your hardwood flloors installed. I used them a few years ago to put in hardwood floors downstairs. Ever since I did that, I wanted to put them upstairs as well.
>
> I did that this past October. Staff at Slaughterbeck's are professional and extremely help -- from the office/store staff to the installers.
>
> I highly recommend them. I LOVE my floors!!

> Hired Slaughterbeck Floors to a very difficult patching of a hand-scraped pecan floor. They did an outstanding job ... I was very surprised they could match the floor as closely as they did.
>
> The Slaughterbeck Team was very professional, on-time and did exactly what they said they would do. The crew cleaned was courteous and cleaned up each day. I am extremely pleased with the results.

> Slaughterbeck Floors removed our old flooring and installed new wood laminate flooring and baseboards in our condo. Ryan, our installer, did a great job with the installation, answered our questions and fixed a few things that needed attention. He was very friendly and seemed to enjoy his work. He was very experienced and took great attention to detail. We are very pleased with our new floors and baseboards, it has made a huge positive impact on our home.

 - Description: Douglas fir is an excellent species for floors and is, quite often, overlooked since it has a low score on the Janka hardness test. However, while it may be in a category of a “softwood” it’s actually quite durable as it can easily bend and return to its original shape. It’s one of the ideal species to go with if you want to give your home a natural, rustic feel. Another ideal way to combat its softness is by adding texture through wire brushing or hand scraping, which would also give it a wild…

## Community Q&A

**Q: what are the tile colors?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What are the tile colors

A: Hello Danielle,
Thank you for your inquiry. This was a fun job for us!
The Marmoleum Modular tiles, 2.5 mm thick, 9.8 x 9.8 are colors, Black Hole 3707 & Stardust T3722. These are the whitest and blackest colors Marmoleum has to offer.
Thank you for reaching out!
Regards, Debbie

**Q: Best carpet color to disguise stains and dirt?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Was leaning toward a dark chocolate but users on another thread highly warned against it.

So I'm back to the drawing board. I'll have wall to wall carpet (please no suggestions for hardwood..I love carpet so am decided on that :) ) including carpeted stairs.

I may stick to a dark brown for my bedroom upstairs simply because their will be little foot traffic. But that leaves nun of the rest of the house. What color will hide stains and sorts the best???? I'll be in the country with a 3 year old...so I need it to be conducive to all the happy mess that can bring.

A: There's a reason hotels and casinos use those hideously crazy designs - they hide stains! You'll probably want something a little more pleasant on the eyes. But we can learn something from those busy carpets.
Any solid dark or very light
carpet is going to show dirt. It's better to have something with flecks or
multiple colors to hide dirt. A very low level loop or plush will hide
foot traffic well.
And when it comes to cleaning, man-made materials are easier to clean up - nylon and polyester. Wool is also stain resistant to spills and it repels oils; a great natural option...but pricey.
Polyester is great at spills of liquids but actually attracts oils. Nylon, on the other hand, is great at repelling both, just like wool, but there is a lot of variety in how well they repel - it's all based on the coating the manufacturer uses.

**Q: Is this the 'accent' or 'dawn' pattern?** *(in Photo Questions)*

thanks!

A: Thank you for your inquiry! This floor is Wicanders "Cork Comfort Originals/Symphony."

**Q: What type of flooring is this?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Good morning, and thank you for your question. This is a yellow birch floor which we installed in Portola Valley.

**Q: Flooring** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love the floor! Marmoleum? If so what are the colors called? Thanks

A: Thank you! Yes, it was a Marmoleum job, in Slate Green, Butter and Charcoal.

**Q: Luxury Vinyl vs. Engineered Hardwood** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Help! My husband and I are planning to build a new home this year and are in the process of looking for flooring for the kitchen. We like the look of wood flooring. I stopped in a flooring store yesterday and the owner was showing/recommending me luxury vinyl flooring vs. engineered. I guess I never thought I'd even be considering vinyl. My husband isn't quite convinced (of the vinyl). We've pretty much ruled out actual hardwood flooring. Any thoughts/advice is appreciated!

A: Luxury vinyl planks are excellent for kitchens and we often recommend it over wood for residential kitchens. The prices for LVT ranges greatly - you've got the cheap stuff from big box stores and you have thick planks or tiles that are meant to last for 10-30 years.
On that note, we disagree with thewhovian2000's comments about vinyl tile's cheapness (this isn't the vinyl / linoleum flooring used from 30-40 years ago). It's thick, high quality and has a great look and feel. We even used it for the front room of our showroom:
\[https://www.houzz.com/products/new-showroom-floor-vinyl-planks-in-herringbone-pattern-prvw-vr~39773000\[(https://www.houzz.com/products/new-showroom-floor-vinyl-planks-in-herringbone-pattern-prvw-vr~39773000)
Those are custom cut planks we cut into a herringbone pattern.
@jheimlich - LVT is very comfortable to walk on. It's very durable. It can be applied to any level surface, including glued to concrete, but we typically lay a foundation of plywood for comfort and insulation.
You may also want to consider Marmoleum. It's more expensive but is even stronger and one of the most eco-friendly materials available. This is what it's made of:

Linseed / tall oil
Limestone
Tree Rosin
Wood Flour
Natural Mineral Pigments
Jute

It's also not for the DIYer. A master installer is required to install it. It'll last a lifetime, rated for 40+ years.
Here's a custom kitchen we did in a retro-look with Marmoleum:
