I am so happy i found houzz ! We are building a house here in Canada and I have this basement bar where the wall behind the sink just looks empty. I am thinking of putting floating shelves there since I do not like the look of cabinets. Except my problem is how far up do i do the back splash? I do not want to do the whole wall and my designer suggested I do 12 inches high and covering the 6 feet from edge of bar to the wall behind the sink. How many floating shelves? How should I organize them and how long should each shelf be? I dont want the backsplash to look like an incomplete design. The cabinets are a light grey in colour with stainless steel appliances. Please see the pics for details. Right now I got dark grey quartz with sparkle. Its called monarch and the backsplash is a subway tile that has a mirror/glass look edge. Just the 12 inch height of subway tile will cost me 500$ hence why am avoiding doing the whole wall over there. Hope that makes sense ! Thanks everyone ! A: If you put floating shelves that just go up to where you originally wanted to stop the tile then it may work. Another way to do the shelves is a rectangle box. The section of the wall without tile may look ok as long as the colours match up. I think it would look better if you stop the shelves where the counter ends instead of going all the way across. Your designer might be right about it. If you try to make it look too complete it might look too busy. There are quite a lot of photos for bar shelves online. Here are a few for bars including a couple examples of the box style shelves. **Q: Please help with fireplace design** *(in Home Decorating)* HI all, As you can see from the photos, we've neglected style in favor of function (barely) due to raising two young boys. We need help designing this fireplace as it's the centerpiece of the living room and new furniture and layout will follow after we get this sorted out. What a beautiful view you have **Q: Wallpaper around the TV** *(in Home Decorating)* Hi guys, finally finished installing the wall cabinets. We wanted to add a wallpaper around the tv with some geometric pattern to add a bit of style and contrast as everything is in plain white. This is a house in the beach. Any recommendations on what to put and where to buy? The sofa is a one piece sectional in white leather and the rug is in white and cobalt. We were looking for a modern wallpaper in vinyl, but we are open to any suggestion. Thanks. A: We supply 3D wall panels that can be glued to the wall. If there is a company near you then it might be worth considering over wallpaper as it has some depth to it. They can be painted to any colour. **Q: Wallpaper over vinyl, or wallpaper over paper backing/paste?** *(in Paint)* I am renovating a room that has vinyl wallpaper applied directly to 80s faux wood paneling. Removing the paneling is not an option. Would it be better to apply new wallpaper directly over the existing wallpaper using vinyl over vinyl paste, or would it be better to remove the vinyl layer and apply new paper over the paper backing/paste remnants sitting atop the paneling? A: You can use some 3D brick panels.. They are around $60 CAD per 4x8 sheet (roughly). A lot of our clients purchase these to decorate their homes/offices and whitewash them (paint white). These can be cut and glued to the wall and then painted any colour. They are often used by movie production companies but are also great for decorating walls in the home. **Q: Tile Recommendation for Exterior Fountain** *(in Landscape Design)* Hi, We just installed a large water feature in our backyard. It can be seen from most rooms in the house and was designed to not obstruct the city view beyond. Here’s the problem: we had it done in stucco with a steel gray glass feature strip. To us the whole thing falls flat. We thought tiling it might the answer...what do you think? I sure would appreciate suggestions!!!! A: This kind of mosaic tile is nice (this is a popular photo on Houzz) but I'm not sure how blue mosaic would look surrounded by the green grass and white paving stones.
