> D. Michael Designs exceeded all our expectations for a kitchen, living room and laundry room remodel. We had some apprehension choosing a builder to complete our project, but all I can say is we hit the jackpot with Dave Peters of D. Michael designs. Here are a few reasons we would not hesitate to recommend D. Michael Designs:
>
> 1\. Dave is timely - if he said he was going to meet at a certain time he was usually 5 minutes early.
> 2\. Dave will provide morning email updates (before 7am) stating what work will be accomplished that day.
> 3\. Dave has a dedicated set of subcontractors he used for our project: the carpenters, tile installers, electrician, plumber and cabinet guy were all exceptional.
> 4\. Dave puts everything in writing so there are no surprises.
> 5\. Dave has accounts with several local businesses so we could access builder pricing for our appliances, tile, countertops, etc.
> 6\. Dave demands perfection. On periodic project walk throughs he would often notice things that needed to be addressed before we did.
> 7\. When we were out of town, Dave provided pictures of the project so we could see the progress being made (he has an Instagram account)
>
> Don't hesitate to talk with Dave of D. Michael designs, you won't be disappointed.

> I have remodeled several homes over the years and Designer Michael Designs LLC is the best by far. Not only did they start and finish the project on time, they also arrived on time each day and worked a full day. They stuck to the budget and were efficient at trouble-shooting any unexpected problems as they arose. At the end of each day I was informed of what was scheduled for the next day and who would be arriving at the house (plumber, carpenter, etc.). They are efficient, friendly and professional. I will definitely be using them on future projects.

> My experience with D. Michael Designs was beyond my expectations, pleasant and professional, I would highly recommend them. I hired them because Dave consistently responded to my emails and phone calls in a timely manner during the interview process. Once the work started he was pleasant to work with and always tried his best to accommodate my requests. He continued to communicate via email, phone, text on a daily basis, sending pictures of work done as well. This was essential to me since I did not live in the house at that the time of the remodel and could only visit every other weekend.
>
> The project consisted of a garage conversion to master bed/bath, complete kitchen remodel, new flooring, interior paint job and a few other tasks. Everything went smoother than I had expected which was a nice surprise.
>
> The project was completed within the expected time frame and cost. The workmanship was excellent, I am very pleased with the final results and would definitely recommend D. Michael Designs.

> I would like to share a very positive experience with my hall bathroom remodel. As a repeat customer of D. Michael Designs, I knew he did excellent work. The bathroom had one slight modification (wainscoting) about 20 years ago and was otherwise as it was built in 1983. I had an idea of what I wanted but knew I would need to rely on David's designer input. We knew the foundation of color-scheme desired and proceeded from there. Upon David's visit the next day, he brought tile samples and more for us to look at. His selections were completely in-line with what I envisioned. We selected the materials and then discussed design. He brought viable, exciting ideas to the table, and we quickly agreed to the direction we wanted to go. The results are nothing short of fabulous. I find myself going in, turning on the light (and silent fan) and just embracing the beautiful bathroom created. I look forward to the next phase of our remodel and am confident it will be just as impressive.

> Hands down, the best remodel experience we have ever had!! We have used D. Michael designs for four projects now in our house. The crews they use are on-time, professional, take time to thoroughly prep and clean up the area, as well as take PRIDE in their work! Mr. Peters is consistently on-site throughout the project to ensure the work is of the highest quality and being done to the customers satisfaction! They just finished our latest remodel last week and my wife and I are already planning our next project to have them do for us in the near future! I highly recommend using D. Michael Designs for your next home project!! The quality of work is second to none!!

**Comment from Designer Michael Designs LLC:**

> Extremely pleased with them. They did major remodel & add-on for us. High quality work, very creative, great ideas, quick response, frequent updates, very professional. I highly recommend them!

**★★★★★ — Jennifer Gemmill, Nov. 2018**

> We've had Dave re-do our kitchen and more recently our hardwood floors/fireplace. Everything looks great. He makes sure that you're updated and happy at each step of the process, from design and planning, to demo, to installation.

**★★★★★ — Margaret Millikin, May 2018**

> The older home we purchased needed an additional bathroom and closets plus a hot tub pad and a roof on the deck. Dave had submitted a design to the previous owner so we met with him and were impressed with his ideas and experience, especially his familiarity with our strict local architectural process. Throughout the project he answered all our questions promptly and provided detailed estimates whenever we changed or grew the scope. When older-home issues arose, we worked them out together, and we were glad for the innovative ideas his team provided. He was frequently onsite and sent us update emails with descriptions and photos of progress. The job took longer than we expected initially, but the work was well done and we are very happy with the outcome. We highly recommend D Michael Designs and will definitely use them for any future projects.

**★★★★★ — Dave Newman, Feb. 2018**

> Wonderful experience with D. Michael Designs. He was asked to help design a more open kitchen/dining room. The result was raising the old 7' kitchen ceiling to match the 8' dining room ceiling, remove a dividing wall, sheet rock and texture, add updated lighting and granite countertops. D. Michael was able to flex his schedule to match ours, finished ahead of schedule and on budget. No surprises and even a few extra perks graciously added.

**Comment from Designer Michael Designs LLC:**

> Thank You so much for the 5 star rating! We always enjoy opening up walls and ceilings to make a larger spaces. The Client was very knowledgeable and knew what he wanted, just wanted someone to meet his expectations. I am very pleased with how the kitchen came out. Enjoy the space Dave!

**★★★★★ — Kevin Roche, May 2017**

> Travis Bowman has done exemplary work in design for the addition we are planning for our church in San Antonio. Although we have not started building yet, Travis displayed passion, knowledge, and skill in helping us develop a workable building. He listened to our ideas with an open mind, then helped us adjust the plan when necessary, taking into consideration financial limits, population concerns, and spiritual inspiration. He is a pleasant gentleman who has our complete endorsement and faith.

## Community Q&A

**Q: what would a job like this cost** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Are you referring to the pergola ? The outdoor shower ? Or the pool and decking ? Thanks

Dave

**Q: HELP what would be the closest color match to BM Edgecom grey in a SW** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I live on an island and can't run to the paint store. I'm going to paint my house shortly and have almost decided on BM Edgecom Grey but BM paint is not available here! But Sherwin Williams is. I don't have a paint chip to make a color match (not that I'd trust that anyway-we live in Central America) long story... PLEASE

A: This is what the poster said. "I chose Edgecomb Gray for all of my main living areas. I first had SW computer match for the color, it wasn't spot-on, so i took the actual chip in and they color matched it by hand. It was very, very close. Maybe leans a tiny bit toward the beige side of greige than the BM sample, but that could've just been the difference in sheens." It sounds like that code is a close as possible to the edgecomb, but it can change just a little from mixing machine to mixing machine, so finding a SW named color is your best bet. Do you have a SW paint store or just the ability to order SW paint? If they have a store you can go and compare your Edgecomb sample with all the others. If not your kinda stuck to relying on a computer picture and you would be just as close going with the code in the picture.

**Q: Please! I need help for my kitchen remodel!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

A pipe leak brought on a much overdue, though unexpected, kitchen remodel. Insurance is paying $4,000 for repairs, but this kitchen needs more than repairs!
I need help with the design that will not empty my retirement savings!
I'm replacing the cooktop with a range (with microwave overhead) so there will be countertop reaching to the pantry area. How can I use the spaces that are "lost" in the back corners. The back of the pantry is practically unreachable!
I had a bookcase here, by the door, but wonder if a shallow pantry cupboard would work? Glass doors on top?
I'd going to replace the window and sliding door.
Thank you for your advice!
measurements-
30" wall by door
9'4" window/sink/dishwasher wall
14'3" stove/oven wall
8'4" pantry/refrigerator wall (refrigerator is 36")

I think I'm going to put in IKEA cabinets.

A: I would take out the oven/micro cabinet and the pantry and make a corner pantry with a standard door. I have seen these with frosted glass doors that say pantry that make it look really nice.

**Q: Need help with bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have a bathroom with black fixtures and a jacuzzi tub, which we don't use. We would rather have a walk in or step in shower. The bathroom also has no storage for TP or towels and it has no vanity. Our guests use this bathroom as well as us. I have a limited budget, but we aren't getting much use out of this bathroom and the black fixtures are a pain to keep looking nice. The only time the fixtures look good is when they aren't being used.
Kay Martin
kaymart@hotmail.com

A: Mrs Martin,
It sounds like you need to bring in a Designer/Design Build Company to help you out. The things I would need to know to give you a good layout option with storage would amaze you, so a home visit is the only way to go. Prices range on this service, but I can promise you that spending the extra time in prep and planning saves time and money when it's time for the hammers to come out. I would suggest the Find Professionals section. Before signing a contract or even getting an estimate make sure you check in to the companies. I have know more than a few designers have selected hearing when you mention your budget, a good designer isn't going to show you marble floor tile if you only have 10k to spend... etc.

**Q: HELP! Uneven basement door trim!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Please help! This uneven door trim is the first thing we see when walking downstairs
To our newly constructed basement. Our contractor says since the floor is slanted there was nothing he could do, but I can't accept that!
Has anyone experienced a similar issue with basement door trim? How did you fix the problem?
Picture 1 is a close up of the trim
Picture 2 lets you see that the door is literally the first thing you look at when coming downstairs

A: Most sheetrock hangers do not check for level on the ceilings, even though that is the easiest way to fix the problem. as far as adjusting the floor, it would not have helped the fact that the door stays open or closed lets me know that it is pretty close to level and the reveal or space at the bottom of the door seems to be even which is why i think its a ceiling problem. Should the contractor have checked to make sure the ceiling joist were level, probably, but 90% won't. The only issues I would have with the contractor at this point are (1) why was it not brought up as soon as the sheetrock went up or at least when the door went in. (2) there is nothing that can not be corrected so saying that there is nothing he can do is a lie. it can be fixed but more than likely it will be a change order costing you more time and money. if he brought it up as soon as the sheetrock was hung it would have been easier/cheaper to fix and would not require extra trim, paint and time.

**Q: Master bathroom remodel/possibly selling home soon** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello! First, let me provide a little background:
3 bed, 2 bath bi-level home (formerly 1.5 baths) about 1700 sq. ft. w/ two-car garage located in northern NJ, purchased in 2008 right before the market crashed.
We fully remodeled our kitchen in 2011 (entirely gutted): new cabinets, granite countertop, stainless steel appliances, mosaic tile backsplash, ceramic floor tile. The color palette is Earthtone (espresso cabinets, shades of brown/beige).
We also took our main bath, which was rather large with much wasted space, and combined that with the half bath on the opposite wall to create a smaller main bath and master bath, both approximately 5'x8'. In 2015, we finished the main bath - cast iron bathtub with glass "tub shield", floating vanity w/ one vessel sink, chrome fixtures, dual-flush toilet, "wood-look" ceramic floor tile, glass/ceramic mosaic shower tile, recessed lighting, LED bathroom fan. The color palette is much brighter than the kitchen - the vanity is espresso with a white countertop & sink, but everything around it is white/shades of gray with a very pleasant light green paint (it sort of brings out subtle shades of green in the mosaic tile).
Both our kitchen and main bathroom have a very modern & polished look, and we are aiming for the same with our master bath remodel. For two years, the master bath has been a "gaping hole," but now we've figured out what we want and we're ready to get it all set!
Of course, a wrench has been thrown into this to some extent - we're strongly considering taking a relocation opportunity that my husband will have in the next year or so, which means we would need to sell our house. We've consulted a real estate agent, and one thing we asked was whether we should just keep the master bath as a "blank slate" for a buyer to come in and design how they want. We were told that would be a terrible idea given the other excellent remodeling work we've done to the house. OK, so we decided that we need to proceed with the master bathroom project, but we've scaled things back a bit in light of our possible move.
This is our current plan for the master bath: small floating double vanity (about 48"), dual-flush toilet, chrome fixtures, mirror with ambient LED lighting, recessed lighting, LED bathroom fan, ceramic floor tile, glass shower tile with mosaic "penny" tile accents, chrome fixtures including ceiling-mounted "rainshower" shower head - we opted not to do a bathtub in this room. Instead, we are doing a larger shower area, easily enough space for two people. One thing we have noticed, much to our chagrin, is that glass shower doors are quite expensive. Is this something we truly NEED to get? If we opted NOT to get a glass shower door and instead used a shower curtain, do you think a potential buyer would look past our house because of it?
For sure, the buyer profile of those interested in our house is going to people who do NOT want a project. They want something "done-up." They want a house in our general price range that has good bones but also doesn't have a hideous kitchen and horrible bathrooms that need to be quickly torn out and redone. Many of the houses in our area have been owned by the same person or people for many years and have an "older" look to them. Stylistically, we are already miles ahead most of our competition in that regard. The house across the street from us sold a few years ago - the kitchen was one of the most atrocious kitchens I've seen but was fairly decent otherwise. That house ended up selling for about $20K under asking price. If that house can sell with a hideous kitchen, I figure our house should be able to sell at a good price - kitchens cost WAY more than shower doors.
Your thoughts would be most helpful! Thanks in advance!

A: Here is an example, i will say that if you're going to do any body sprays or handhelds you need to move the plumbing to the wall with the door opening. any water spraying towards that opening has the potential to go thru that opening. as far as the space needed you could do this same thing without the curbless setup. adding a curb or step would prevent you from needing to encroach on the rest of your bathroom as you can tell by this picture it works with a tub/shower conversion, but you will need to add some light in the shower as your loosing most of the light that it used to get. ACM also brings up a valid point, if you're not used to the draft it can be uncomfortable, but I think with a bathroom that size it won't be too much of an issue.
