**★ — Scott Hetman, Oct. 2022**

> I would not recommend this company due to issues with communication, timelines that were not met, and quality of work.

**★ — User, Feb. 2016**

> I needed a ridge vent replaced. The workmen did not install the new shingles properly, the roofing felt was left exposed as well some nails holding it down. I had it in writing from another contractor that this is improper installation.
> I have photos taken by the Home Inspector I hired to check the job. They are on my Facebook page.
> There was miscommunication throughout what should be a simple process.
> The clean-up afterwards left something to be desired.
> The resolution of the problems did not go well and I had to bring in another company to redo the job right.
> An extremely stressful and disappointing experience.
> I wound not recommend this firm to anyone.

**Comment from Jim Hicks Home Improvement:**

> This is unfortunate. We first worked for Mr. Harris in 1999 when he hired us to replace his siding. He was quite pleased and even called the very same Home Inspector's radio show and raved about us. Since then he has hired us many times over the years to replace his windows, fix his roof and remodel his bathroom. With the repair that he references above he contacted me saying that this Home Inspector had found a discrepancy in a repair we had recently done earlier that week. I could not understand what he was talking about so I called the Home Inspector myself who explained what he found. He agreed that there was no danger of water intrusion but it needed to be corrected. I agreed (the Home Insoector and I are still are good friends to this day). When I called Mr. Harris back to inform him that we intended to correct the issue he told me that he had already hired another contractor to fix it and refused to pay is for the job. I could not understand why, after all the years we had worked for him and all the glowing reviews on Angie's List, Mr. Harris did not allow us to correct the discrepancy. I was quite disappointed.

> We contracted for a new roof and gutters. From start to finish everything was well explained and handled professionally. The work crew was respectful of our property and completed the job right on schedule. We sought out several quotes and Hicks was very competitive. We chose them based on recommendations from other clients, professional and informed, and quality of the materials they recommended. We would use Jim Hicks again for any home project.

**★★★★★ — snownations, May 2015**

> Jim Hicks came out to my mother-in-law's property and investigated, inside and outside, the source and cause of the leak from her roof. He determined that the flashing around the chimney needed to be replaced. His construction contract was thorough and the price reasonable. I could tell that Jim Hicks knew his business and that I could trust him. My trust was not unfounded.
>
> Jim searched in the shed for shingles so that he could match them with shingles on the roof (which had been put there many years ago). He found them - not an easy task amid the layers of accumulated debris and filth!
>
> The end result of the work was truly amazing. Excellent work! I highly recommend Jim Hick's Home Improvement.

**★★★★★ — stovkey, April 2015**

> My husband and I decided to overhaul our 1970's kitchen in our contemporary home. We were looking for a contractor who could work with our vision of an ultra-modern kitchen design. Jim arrived at our house and immediately stated taking measurements of our kitchen space. He came back to us with several design ideas, and other suggestions- such as putting a skylight in the kitchen. After several design changes and months of work on Jim's part, we agreed on the design. What surprised us is how much time and energy Jim spent on designing our kitchen, without any guarantee that we were going to use his company, and without any money give to him to work out design ideas. We had other contractors look at our kitchen and asked us for $500-$1000 just to work on a design!
>
> After detailed planning and looking at what type of fixtures and faucets, sinks, and lighting we wanted, we signed a contract with Jim Hicks. His foreman, Justin came and met with us to outline what to expect during each phase of the kitchen project. Justin was so organized and was a delight to work with. Of course, as with most projects, nothing ever goes exactly as planned. When we did run into delays, Justin did everything he could to re-organize the work that needed to get done, and then make it happen.
>
> The overall project took a little longer than we expected, but that was not due to Jim's company. The end result: we have the most amazing kitchen! It's very high quality, and Justin was instrumental in assuring that each aspect or the work- plumbing, HVAC, electrical work was performed to the highest standard.
>
> We would recommend Jim Hicks Home Improvement to anyone who is thinking of remodeling the kitchen. It is a company with strong moral values, great work ethic, dependable, and they stand by their work and accept only the highest quality of workmanship.

**★★★★ — dejones1975, July 2014**

> Kitchen remodel, room was take done to studs in sections, wall removal and appliances were relocated. These guys made the transformation pretty painless considering the amount of work and personnel involved!

**★★★★★ — David Cruz, Feb. 2014**

> I had a full wall that separated the kitchen and dining room making it impossible to communicate while cooking. The Jim Hicks crew came in, knocked out the wall, and gave me an open concept thus allowing me to see and speak to my guest while in the kitchen. They were very professional always cleaning up after themselves and ensuring everything was done excellently.

**★★★★★ — localbiz, Dec. 2013**

> I have had the pleasure of knowing Jim Hicks for the last year, and he has proven over and over again to be reliable and very knowledgeable regarding his industry.
>
> In a day where skepticism and second opinions are all too common, Jim's ethical nature definitely stands out!
>
> If you are looking for honesty instead of a sales pitch, this is the guy to call!

**★★★ — Christie Hill, Dec. 2013**

> Jim Hicks Home Improvement provides hands-down the best home improvement services in Hampton Roads. They listen to their customer's needs and work hard to exceed all expections. When it comes to kitchens, bathrooms, additions, etc they are experts at providing high quality work.

**★★★★★ — mpollock62, Dec. 2013**

> As a Realtor, I have recommended Jim Hicks Home Improvement to my clients for various kinds of work. No matter how small or how large, they have never let me down. When I refer someone to my clients, it is a reflection of me. My clients are always pleased with the quality of their work. For this reason I will continue to send business to Jim Hicks.

**★★★★ — patweber, Dec. 2013**

> A few years in our newly built home, the builder was still not able to repair the leaks from two skylights. I met Jim through local networking and telephoned him. He put his best man on the job. Things went fine until about a year after, leaks again. Jim sent the same best man back, it turned out to be a defective skylight at the time. They replaced it, sured things up without cost to us, and now, years later, all is tighter than a drum!

**★★★★★ — unhappy12, Dec. 2013**

> We had the pleasure of working with Jim Hicks and his company this year on a water problem that plagued our home since it was built in 2008. After numerous attempts by the builder to find the cause, we were directed to Mr. Hick's by a mason. After a water test, he recommended a practical and affordable solution that has kept our house dry during the late torrents of rain in our area.
>
> We are pleased to highly recommend him, not only for his workmanship and creative solution to our problem, but also for the joy of working on that solution resolve the problem. After our experience with builders, we often take a skeptical eye to home improvement specialists, but we were very pleased with his ability to craft a piece to divert the water from the brick and solve our leak.
>
> We give him five stars and know you will too!

 - Description: Our clients in Stonehouse, Toano Virginia asked us to make their dream of a finished basement come true. They had some great ideas about what they wanted and also some sound performance goals for this area of their home. They were interested in a having a stone wall in the sitting area and sound proofing installed as part of the design as they felt that the neighbors across the way in the rear of the home were much too noisy with loud dogs and amplified music. We installed Homasote soundproofing…

The Whites needed more room for the growing family when the grandkids would come and visit. They had an existing deck that they never used so they asked us to remove the deck and build a room addition where it used to be. They had a beautiful backyard and still wanted to be able to enjoy it. To accomplish this we used large picture and double hung windows to give a full view of the trees…

 - Description: One trend that we are seeing from our clients here at Jim Hicks Home Improvement is having the Kitchen Island cabinet a different color than the base and wall cabinets in the rest of the kitchen, it can serve to break up the monochromatic feel of the kitchen and serve as an interesting design piece! It definitely creates interest and depth to a beautiful kitchen such as this one in Newport News! You'll also notice this kitchen has a tile floor, the wall cabinets are 42" high to the ceiling with…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Do I need a rug or not?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need something to liven up this living room. Do I put a rug on top of the carpet or just cushions? If a rug, should it be a darker shade or lighter shade?

A: I agree that you need an area rug with color to brighten up the space as well as bright throw pillows.

**Q: Best windows** *(in Other)*

What are the highest quality windows these days for a high end home?

A: it depends on what type of windows you are looking for, and if you are looking for replacement or new xonsyrucrion windows, but I would encourage you to look at Marvin's Fiberglass line.

**Q: Re-doing master bedroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have a mission style bedroom set. The plan is to pull the carpet out and put in hardwood. Should the floor color match the bedroom set or be a lighter/darker color to contrast? I could put throw rugs next to the bed..... I'm worried about too much of the same color wood.

A: it might also depend of you're using prefinished or sand and finish hardwood. if you are using prefinished, your local flooring supplier should have samples you can take home to compare colors.

**Q: need help with hall bath** *(in Design Dilemma)*

placement of the sink in the vanity

A: depends on the type of countertop. laminate usually uses a drop in, cultured marble has an integral bowl or granite uses an under mount typically. unless you chose a vessel sink

**Q: Is this rug okay with my couch & other colors?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am thinking of getting this rug? in a larger size (really large- 12 x 15) for my family room. I know it's hard to see colors in photos, but is this rug? to close in color to my couch? it's reasonably priced, Ann's matches the other colors well enough, I think. The one photo shows chair, table, couch & pillow so you have most of the colors. Thank you!

A: I think they work well together

**Q: room divider** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'd like to do something to separate my living room and dining room. Any ideas?

A: Have you considered decorative columns?
