> I highly recommend Myers Constructs. Not only did they do a fabulous job on one property that was in desperate need of some renovations and another that needed some specific repairs and upgrades, they advised me while I was looking for a house to purchase (and kept me from making a costly mistake with an appealing but problematic property), and did a construction inspection of the house I bought. Because of their detailed inspection, I asked for more cash at closing than my agent recommended, could document my ask, and got a better deal than I would have otherwise. With Myers, you are dealing with the business partners directly, and they are meticulous in going over what needs to be done and why and explaining their recommendations. They go over the contract with you line by line, so you know what you are signing off on. They option-priced different stages of renovation for me so I could stay within budget. How many times do you hear a contractor say “We’re going to work really hard to keep you on budget”?! They also respect older homes, not just fancy expensive older homes, but modest homes that also deserve to have their craftsmanship and details preserved. They have high standards for the quality of work of all their subcontractors. For one job, they persevered in finding a floor refinisher to repair and restore the original wood floors, rather than just ripping them out and putting in new floors. The charming old iron floor register is still there, too. They are responsive to questions and concerns, and somehow make you feel that you are one of a few select and favorite clients. I am a remote owner, and I felt completely comfortable relying on Myers to get the job done and get it done correctly, unlike other contracts I’ve had where I felt compelled to make frequent appearances to keep things on track.

> We hired Myers to redo a bathroom and take care of a variety of other smaller jobs in our 1920's house. They did a excellent job. The craftsmanship was of very good quality. From top to bottom the people were great to work with. They were very good at listening to and taking care of any concerns we had as the project progressed. Things got done when they said they were going to be done and were done well. Finally, recently a problem, not of their making, surfaced with a sliding glass door in the bathroom. Although it was well past the warranty, Myers paid all costs to replace the door without us even asking.

**Comment from Myers Constructs, Inc.:**

> Wow so wonderful when our long term loyal customers say these things! Makes the day shine for us!

**★★★★★ — abertele, Dec. 2012**

> Myers impressed me from our first point of contact. They were gracious, communicative, professional, collaborative and genuine. I was excited to work with this team from the start. Our project, while small, was incredibly complex. Myers listened openly when I gave input on technical aspects and issues, and relied on my expertise with a great deal of trust. During the construction phase, I continued to work collaboratively with the site crew, scrutinizing on the smallest of details and working together to get everyting 'just right'. I look forward to our next opportunity to work together.

Redesigning a small space requires careful selection of small sized furniture and fittings so as not to overstuff the space. Selecting items that can do double duty is s…

 - Description: This project was for a couple who downsized to a rancher from a large historic home where they had lived for many years. While they wanted to "live smaller" and renovate on a budget, they still wanted a lot of the amenities of the previous home. Fist on their "must have list" was a true master bathroom with a shower. We stole a little space from the large closet to allow us to make the shower larger. The shower has two benches, one for sitting and another for shower products. Another "must have"…

At one time the building seems to have been a small factory or store house. It is in the Queen Village section of Philadelphia and seems to date back to the mid 1800's. It was probably turned into a residence sometime in the early 1900's. Because of historic requirements, we were not allowed to alter the window openings…

 - Description: These property owners called us when they were ready to renovate a falling down out building behind their house. This old building was once a carriage house that was later converted into a garage. After that and before they purchased the property, the old carriage house/garage fell into disrepair. The old roof and walls were falling in, the concrete floor was cracked, doors and windows were gone. We were asked to redesign the carriage house into a "his and hers" studio space for these artist hom…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Pergola with retractable canopy for back deck - need advice!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hey folks! I've gotten a quote for putting a pergola with retractable canopy covering half of the back deck. The overall effect will be like this (not my house, just examples):

...but with retractable canopies instead of the tight lattice pergola above:
The wooden pergola frame will be stained to match the deck and I think it will blend in well. Right now, the deck gets constant sun all day long, and we don't use the space much (except for growing herbs) because of the intense heat and sun exposure. Mosquitoes are also an issue in our yard.
The pergola canopy is an alternative to our original idea to screen in the back deck, which we decided against because the roof would block light to all the windows in our living room and some in our sunroom. Even with skylights, we worried the porch would block too much natural light and we'd regret doing it. The natural light is the 1st thing we loved about the house when we first walked in.
I was excited at first, but now I'm hesitating before committing to this job. For about $2500 total, it's obviously MUCH cheaper than screening in the deck, and will provide much-needed shade. But it will also block some light to the living room windows, and disrupt some of the view of the backyard from the living room. Given that the canopy won't completely block rain, I'm not sure what kind of furniture we could put out on the deck that would be relatively weather-proof and yet comfortable to sit in so that we made more use of our deck. Right now, we have a tiny little mosaic tile bistro table and 2 chairs that we never use except at parties where seating is an issue. It's been out <1 year, and it's already rusting.
Here's a picture of our back deck (before it was stained, it is a medium "butternut" brown color now). You can see how many windows open onto it. The pergola would go on the left side of the deck, as you look at this picture.

--Is the pergola actually a good compromise on shade, cost, and lighting? Do you have a pergola canopy, and did it give you more use of your deck? Or is it just a silly novelty item that doesn't provide much function and would just mess with our view? Would it improve resale value on the house?
--Should I just suck it up and screen in the deck, and not worry about the light issue? We would extend the deck to cover the rest of the back of the house, and leave that open, then screen in the existing deck you see now. We can afford it, and maybe skylights would allow enough light in, after all. It would certainly maximize our use of the deck space. In NC, it would be a 3-season room.
--If we go with the pergola canopy...any thoughts on color of the canopy? Gray to match the house, or a bright color for contrast like teal or red? Keep in mind it will be visible from inside the house, I think the folded fabric will cover a tiny bit of the top of the window from inside, and obviously when the canopy is extended it will be visible.
--Again, if we go with the canopy...any suggestions for furniture that is relatively comfortable but weather-resistant? Maybe something with removable cushions we could store inside and just bring out when we want to use the space?
Thanks so much for your thoughts---from a confused 1st-time homeowner! :)

A: If you want to have a very good 3-4 season bug proof room a screened porch with glass frames that can be installed in colder months is the way to go. You deck is large, so it sounds like you could still have unscreened deck areas as well.
To keep letting sun into the house, consider light drapes or none on the windows looking onto the screened porch and the addition of skylights inside the screened room. Skylights can be ordered with motorized shades inside the the layers of glass to help keep the room from over heating.
If you only need protection from the sun, check out a motorized awning. You unfurl it when you need shade and leave it tucked against the house when you don't.
Have some storage built into your new sun room or deck for things like cushions or hoses or toys for the kids. We often build storage like this into benches.

**Q: cabinets** *(in Photo Questions)*

what is the stain color

A: That is a cherry stained maple cabinet. Maple is a cheaper material than cherry, and is often used in painted and stained lower priced cabinets.

**Q: What type of tile is used in backsplash?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thats a green glass tile not hard to find now.

**Q: Can you tell me about the backsplash tile? Thanks!** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: That's a glass tile in a celery green color. Lots of sources for tile like this now. Head to a real tile store not a home center.

FYI your installation is harder with a glass tile as mistakes cutting and the transparency add to the complexity. Good to use a pro.

Tip: Check tile measurement to bottom of the upper cabinets during cabinet layout.

You want 18-19 inches from counter top to bottom of cabinets. Make sure the tile "fits" that space without weird cuts. Do run tile behind range and hood. In this case the micro hood has a mounting plate so the tile was run to the bottom of that plate then the hood installed.

**Q: TILE** *(in Photo Questions)*

What type of tile is this?

A: Yes that rings a bell.

It's a nice buttery yellow. The whole kitchen is kind of buttery yellow plus some earthy shiny green fabric and stone .

Unfortunately the hardware was on back order the week we did this shoot. Picture fancy swirly chrome door pulls.

**Q: Banquette design** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Carpenter built banquette...I wanted it counter height....I think I made a huge mistake. weird seamless corner window. Bench is 24 inches high.,,,...I need help finishing it. Cushions, backing and table ( how tall?) Glass?....any suggestions greatly appreciated...want to keep light and bright.

A: I think that is what Houzz is here for ; )
