The project included a pool (which she collaborated in design with the pool company), fencing (she collaborated with the fence company), as well as backyard and front yard landscaping overhaul. We had plenty of challenges -- an oddly sloped yard, small spaces, etc. I had a vision of what I wanted, and Wendy ran with it and made it more than I imagined. The aesthetic is differentiating and modern, yet in keeping with an older neighborhood. It includes hardscape, plants, trees, artificial turf, handmade metal pots, irrigation and drainage, stones, rocks, and more. She created a beautiful space with curved, stone-trimmed raised beds for vegetable gardening, a tank for goldfish and water plants, native flowering plants set around decomposed granite walkways, and a wind sculpture that looks like a flower unfolding. Two years later we asked her to renovate our side yard in a similar theme, and she designed raised beds with native prairie grasses, flowering plants and fruit trees as well as a fourth vegetable bed. She picked attractive materials appropriate for the hot and dry climate, helped us find qualified contractors, oversaw construction, and followed up to answer my questions and check on plant health. Would you mind sharing the kind of tree this is? Japanese maple? Thanks. A: it is a Japanese maple but I don't remember the variety... **Q: What is the yard material?** *(in Photo Questions)* What is the yard material. I see decomposed granite which is more red in color, but what is the dark zinc colored yard material? Thank you. A: it's a type of dark grey crushed granite, a little bigger than standard decomposed granite but smaller than Tejas black gravel. **Q: Plant types** *(in Photo Questions)* What type of plants are along the center of the photo and do they lose their leaves in the winter? I'm looking for something that stays green all winter for one of our front beds. Thank you A: The plants in the shallow pot are Japanese variegated sedges, which are evergreen in Dallas. They get a little ratty toward winter's end & need a spring trim, but that's all. The plants along the center and by fountain are dwarf germander (Teucrium chamaedrys) which are also evergreen, and have a nice tiny purple tubular flower which attracts hummingbirds. It needs more sun than this sun for better blooming, but we just wanted the structure here. Typically it is sheared, which reduces blooms; it's used a lot in English knot gardens. Larger dark green ball-like shrubs are small boxwoods, also evergreen and they like the alkaline soils in Texas. hope that helps! **Q: Did you custom fabricate the fence or was it stockade?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: $42/linear ft. It's 6 ft high. that was in early 2012 but probably still about the same **Q: landscape question** *(in Photo Questions)* hi! This is gorgeous. I was wondering two things. is the 'love grass' there same as feather grass or Mexican heather? also, every time I see a Spanish dagger there trunk is straight but I love the bend on this one. Did you buy it this way or could one be shaped like this? Thanks so much! Beautiful work! A: This is Eragrostis curvula, weeping love grass. Not the same as Mexican feather grass which tends to crown rot easily here, or Mexican heather. We found the Spanish dagger like this in a specialty nursery in Fort Worth. They are straight when small, but as the heads get bigger they make weird bends (and eventually fall over, and shoot up new ones.) You have to have a tolerance for change with these guys! **Q: What is the metal panel material?** *(in Photo Questions)* I'd like to replicate metal panels like this. Is this raw steel? I'd like to use it on the interior A: It is CorTen steel. Can be used in interiors I guess, although regular hot rolled steel is less expensive...this has stopped rusting for the most part although the pattern changes a bit over time --- *Source: Houzz professional profile.
