Helen focuses on kiln fused glass. The glass designs are constructed piece by piece, and then melted in a kiln to 1460F and above where it becomes liquid. After cooling and annealing a solid piece of glass has been made. The glass is often fired a second or third time to create 3d shapes. Sometimes the glass is layered like a cheese sandwich and melted together other times thin strips of glass are placed on edge like dominoes and fired together. Both techniques enable her to create strong bold designs and distinctive color placement. The designs are created to take the best advantage that light can bring to a piece. I've exposed a couple of the brick walls to give it that lofty industrial feel to it. I'm also running new exposed spiral ductwork for the same effect. Because of preexisting foundation issues(which I've fixed) my floors are pretty uneven. I've got a lot of \#3 Red Oak hardwoods I want to run throughout the downstairs and stairs leading up to the second floor. My Hardwood guys are telling me to keep it it's natural color to hide the fluctuations in the floor. So here's my question. I really like the chrome look of the exposed ductwork and natural steel color in my hand rail. Do you think I should paint the steel and ductwork maybe a brown color for contrast or leave them as pictured? Sorry, i thought i had a better picture of the ductwork. The part above the door have a soffit and then be exposed. But at least you get a picture of the brick, rail, and duct. Just imagine a notty very light hardwood floor. Thanks. A: I would keep the raw steel rails, but powder coat them clear with a satin finish to keep them looking good , easy to clean and will not rust or tarnish. I use a powder coat co in Denver I could recommend. Just stunning and clear. **Q: How do I make this deck charming and up to code on a limited budget?** *(in Design Dilemma)* What do you suggest to make this deck more charming? I really want some type of cover (arbor, roof), a space to dine and a seating area. As you can see, we have several roof angles to work with as well as flat room. Also, there is a brick level on right at back door. Then there are steps that go up into the sun room. I would like some type of railing as well. Thanks for your suggestions. A: I would soften the edge of the deck with plants at the deck level. Maybe create some built in containers all along the deck perimeter to soften the edge and also plants on the grass side to create a graded plant edge.. If budget allows paint or stain the decking to tie in better with the house color. A shade structure over the dining area.
