I signed a contract with them, put thousands of dollars down as a deposit, they made me wait for months to start work, which I did patiently, and when we were days away from starting work they tried to say cost of materials increased the value of the 5 figure job by 45%. I tried to be flexible, offered to subsidize the added cost if they could increase labor on the job, offered to consider other more cost effective materials, they came back with no options other than to return my deposit. I could have had this work done months ago at a cheaper rate and now they’ve screwed me with no remorse. One of the most dishonest and unethical transactions I’ve ever experienced. While their excuse will play on Covid related market forces unfortunately I’m the one that has to take the fall for this, rather that Burke Brothers working to find a compassionate path forward. We have a downward sloping back yard. The rain water starts rolling down from our two neighbors who are a little higher on the hill and by the time it hits our backyard, it is a lot of water at a strong velocity. Burke Brothers came in at the end of last year to install a French Drain with a small berm. The French Drain was lined with river rock. The water is disbursed across the river rock which slows it down enough to be captured in the drainage pipe. The berm retards any overflow and redirects it back into the river rock. The heavy rains hit again this spring but this time, they did no damage to our back yard which is now covered with grass. Burke Brothers did an excellent job. They also moved our existing plants and re-bed them after the work was complete. Their price was not the highest or the lowest out of the quotes we got but we felt it was the most comprehensive. I wanted an elegant walkway with space to display potted plants. The bluestone pavers are perfect, and the walkway design completely changed the look of the house. I love the feel of the stones underfoot and the pattern is almost meditative. Additional work included a large border planting plus landscape clean-up and mulch. We love the new walkway and get lots of compliments from visitors. But I just finished a large landscaping project in my backyard this morning and I am wondering if I am supposed to tip the head person? Or do I tip the landscape designer that actually designed it and came out frequently to oversee everything? I really don't know.... A: It is not customary to tip, however it is always at the discretion of the homeowner. We've had 100k+ jobs completed and had our crew (3 men) tipped $20.00 each. A: These were one of the few existing trees when we started work on the property 15 years ago.
