- Description: This entryway was originally wallpapered with a similar design. However, the seems were separating and several large areas of the paper were loose. The client liked the design but no longer wanted wallpaper in the space. We worked together choosing paint colors and texture finishes to create a design comparable to the original paper. Custom stencils were created in several different motifs and then added to the walls in a random pattern. The overall result is a subtle faux painted wall texture r…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Need help picking kitchen cabinet color** *(in Remodeling)*

I want to get my kitchen cabinets refinished to something more modern. I‘m not planning to change the color of the island cabinets. Please suggest some color that will go with the existing countertop and floors. I was initially leaning towards white, but skeptical as my backsplash and floor are beige, so wondering if it would be too much white. Also considering gray cabinet but not sure if it’ll go well with the cherry color island. Please pour in some suggestions.

A: There are companies that can stain your cabinets to match your island but if you've already decided to paint; I would choose something similar to the grout color. It's difficult to determine colors from online photos but it looks like a gray or taupe? A shade of taupe would go with your island, counters and backsplash but not sure about the wall color?

**Q: Curtain Help- I can never get them right** *(in Home Decorating)*

Curtains and throw pillows; the two decor items that I can never get right. I’ve gone through four sets of curtains in this room and not one set has ever looked right to me. I’ve finally got the color I want (wall color will be changing shortly) but now I can’t get them to hang right and it’s killing me! The rods are level and the curtains all matched up to one another in length. So why do I have one curtain on each side breaking funny on the floor? Is it because of the carpet? The fact that the rods are telescoping? Can this be fixed or do I need to tell my finicky eyes and brain to just let it go? And what is the best way to hang them via the ring clips? I’ve tried Ballard Designs folding method for clip placement, I’ve tried to measure it out, and I’ve also tried with the clips positioned on top of the back tabs.

A: Could be that the panels are not exactly the same measurement, could be the telescoping rod, could be the floor is not level???. Don't go crazy trying to make them look "perfect"!

**Q: Design help! Staying modern and chic with vintage Jacobean wallpaper.** *(in Home Decorating)*

We bought a house that is covered in vintage wallpaper. We are removing a lot of it but want to keep this wallpaper in the dining room. It’s cloth and beautiful, though I’m struggling with how to keep it from looking old fashioned. Our style is more mid-century chic or modern (this is seller’s furniture), though we do love florals. We think white below the floral paper looks a little too stuffy. Thoughts on a dark highly saturated room off a white room ( we are thinking Benjamin Moore radicchio in dining and dove white everywhere else) and how to style these rooms to keep it contemporary?

A: I agree with Hallett & Co. now that I see the cabinet. Just paint the trim that is already painted.

**Q: Desperately need help with wall/backsplash** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have Mont t Blanc quartzite counters, and espresso cabinets. It has been months and I cannot find a tile for an accent wall and backsplash. Mont Blanc is not a pure white, more creamy, but not yellow. I know gray will match but am afraid it will be too much for an entire wall. would white go? Gone thru dozens of samples and need to get this done! Tbh not thrilled with the Mont Blanc and afraid of making another expensive mistake.

A: It is beautiful. I'm not a big fan of glass mosaic back splashes but I do like the idea of using something glossy like your counter. Maybe a faux marble tile (maybe in a modern pattern)? Remember it doesn't have to match, it just has to coordinate.

**Q: Acrylic paint over oil-based primer?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am painting the trim in my new house white. It has a pretty hefty coat of varnish on it so I sanded them down and primed them with oil based primer because I read that it adheres the best. Now I'm wondering if the Regal Benjamin Moore acrylic wall paint will work over the oil-based primer. Please help in my first time home owner adventures! :) (below - just some experimenting with wall color ;) )

A: If you are painting trim, you should use a paint made for trim. Benjamin Moore sells a very good trim paint with primer already mixed in. I think it is called "Advance". I have not had trouble painting Latex/ Acrylic over Oil but if you get a paint with primer mixed in it, you should be fine. I agree with Mary Poulos - ask the paint dealer (as long as it's not one of the big box stores).
