## Community Q&A

**Q: What overhead lighting should we have?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We need to change our current pot lights to ensure they an be used with insulation. We're not sure what to go with..LED/hallogen, fan? And placement. Thanks for your help

A: I recommend a mix of lighting types -

1\) Recessed lights for art work on the walls, or just to wall wash. Wall washing creates a very nice effect, and provides light reflected from the wall as well. It can help a room appear bright without producing glare.

2\) Table lamps, or reading lamps. 

3\) For general light in the room a fan w/ light kit, or a semi-flush fixture. Fans can help reduce your cooling and heating costs. A semi-flush can produce not only downlight, but light that reflects off of your ceiling. This type will create an even general light, and it attaches to a junction box so you don't have to worry about the insulation. If you are not interested in either a fan or semi-flush you can use recessed lights.

What is the brand of the lighting fixtures

**Q: Vanity Lighting** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Can anyone tell me the appropriate way to measure for vanity lighting above a bathroom sink?  The vanity itself is around 29 1/4 inches.

A: The basic rule of thumb is too use a vanity light that is no wider than the mirror. You don't want to go too small either, so maybe something just a little smaller than the width of the mirror.

**Q: Kitchen Dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We just purchased a home in AZ. We need to update a galley kitchen, with no windows. We are trying to make sure we don't make it look any smaller.
1\. Could we paint the back wall one color (thinking sienna) and the other walls in a neutral color?
2\. We are thinking of having cabinets refaced. Would just adding hardware be enough to update? 
3\. We plan on putting in quart countertops. We are leaning toward darker beige/brown rather than a lighter color. Would this make the kitchen look even smaller?
4\. We are also trying to decide on appliance color. Black or stainless?

This picture was taken while sellers were in the process of moving. Please disregard the clutter.

A: I can speak mainly to the lighting in the room, and Scott Design has covered it pretty well. However I strongly recommend including lighting as a fundamental part of any redesign. Your current lighting will detract from any upgrades you make to the counter tops, cabinets and hardware. Adding the undercabinet lights will create much more inviting and useful workspaces. A light over the sink is a must, a recessed fixture or pendant will be great.
