I established my architectural practice in 1988 with a focus on Historic Preservation and exterior restoration. My commissions during the last 36 years gravitated toward renovations and new construction that impact older structures or historic contexts. The last two and half decades of practice has brought me commissions for new homes and structures.

My practice is eclectic and a result of varied experience. In part, living overseas, in France, Italy, Brazil and Belgium had the most influence in my becoming an Architect.

Whether restoring historic buildings, renovating modern apartments, expanding and renovating others or designing new structures, I am committed to achieving a result that serves my clients' needs and provides beauty with lasting value.

I continue to pursue preservation ideals, not only to preserve the built environment, but to re-purpose, restore and create a healthy built environment. Energy conservation and sustainable architecture is rooted in the preservation movement. Interestingly, extending the life cycle and improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings is by far the most 'green' endeavor.

Over the last 6 years, my commissions have diversified my practice further. I have focused my practice on the South Fork of Long Island - with various new homes, renovations, and, addition projects. The projects are situated in Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton and the Village of E. Hampton.

> Daniel Koplowitz is a seasoned architect that listens to your ideas, dreams, and most important, your budget. His design imagination goes as far, and beyond, as your project develops from ideas to a set of blueprints, to a home you love. He works independently so you receive focused attention from the initial discussion phase to the actual build process. He’s a well versed professional who works with you through suggestions for materials, to room layouts, and what he projects will be best suited for you, his partner, in creating a beautiful home, As with any major investment in your anticipated property renovations to full rebuild, know and believe in the person you chose. There are many architectural firms and companies out there, but what Dan possesses is personalized service. Highly recommend.

> Dan Koplowitz designed a beautiful addition to our second home in LI. The addition includes a first floor primary bedroom suite and a bonus room that we use as a den and study. With tons of windows and a vaulted ceiling, it is our favorite room in the house. Dan’s attention to detail and design sense helped elevate our project and we have a wonderful result. It was a challenging project, incorporating pre existing steep rooflines and working with a variety of zoning restrictions. Dan’s design for the addition fits seamlessly into our original floor plan. Some of the key design elements—including a rectangular tray ceiling with beautiful lighting in the master bedroom—were a wonderful touch that makes our place feel very special.

> Dan k was attentive and thorough from the beginning to end of project . Dan Always took calls and showed up to sight when requested. On the site he was always willing for suggestions making the build process go smooth . Any changes were promptly drawn and delivered in a timely fashion

> I found Dan through the internet. He teamed up with me to develop and refine plans for a new house (my second custom) that is now built and happily lived in. He took some modest plans, that were somewhat ordinary, and transformed them into a house plans that were not ordinary to say the least. The home he designed is in the 'modern craftsmen' style but larger to meet my family needs. His design created both character and unique qualities that gives our home a real sense of place -- the photos should speak for themselves. The entire home has cohesiveness -- due in large part to his subtle and unique custom millwork and trim.
> Dan is all about follow through. He does not stop until everyone is pleased with the plan. He cares about his designs and will take every opportunity to improve and implement their detailed / rich aspects while respecting our needs and desires - even through the construction phase. I highly recommend Dan without reservations.

> A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of meeting Daniel after he promptly replied to my search for an Architect, where we briefly discussed what service I needed, and the price range for that service. We then schedule a meeting in person at a cafe in my neighborhood which made things very convenient for me. He showed up on time having done the research and getting himself familiar with the uniqueness of my project, which put me to ease, and I knew then that I was dealing with a serious person and a true professional. We spent a couple hours getting the specifics and at the end of our meeting we decided that we would work together.
> He emailed me a few times to get more information, and just a few days after our first meeting he had emailed me three different propositions. We worked on a few alterations to the proposed schematic I chose. Just like that we had created the home that would fulfill all my needs and most importantly a home that made me happy and proud of.
> Daniel is very passionate about his work, he is very invested in his creations, and he has exceeded all my expectations. He is easy to work with and has great communication skills, he is patient and very professional, I certainly would recommend him to family and friends.

> Dan did a home inspection for me in Montauk. He was thorough, professional and went above and beyond any other inspection process I have ever contracted. He clearly listed and diagrammed all issues and or problems. I felt very knowledgeable about the home I was purchasing before we moved forward and that feeling was priceless. Thanks, Dan.

> Dan Koplowitz did a great job on our New York City apartment. He was very diligent and reliable. We happily recommend him.

**★★★★★ — Paul Rochman, Sept. 2016**

> My wife and I have known Dan for over 18 years. We have found him to be easy to work with, extremely creative and very knowledgeable about the entire construction process. He designed the complete renovation and second story addition to our home, which came out great. In 2010 we built a new 11,000 square foot 2 story office building in Nyack, NY and Dan did great job from helping us get the approvals that we needed though the entire construction project.
> I recommend him highly.

**★★★★★ — Elissa CONOSCENTE, Sept. 2016**

> Dan is amazing. If I could give him 10 stars I would. He designed the most beautiful deck for us. I met with 5 architects and Dan's ideas are so far ahead of other architects that came to see the perspective job he won the job hands down. All the builders that quoted on the job said his designs were so easy to understand and the detail was of a high quality which is rare these days. We negotiated pricing and thank goodness Dan was able to work with within our budget. Dan worked closely with us to make sure all the details and finishing touches were perfect right down to the last nail in the wood. It's very important to me to be able to communicate so closely with someone working on our house and be heard. Dan was such a pleasure to work with with he handled all the project management from working with the city to obtain the planning permission to helping me chose the correct treatment for the deck to be finished. I have handed Dan's card out to all of my friends and posted reviews all over local boards. I just can't shout out loudly enough at how fabulous Dan is!!!

**★★★★★ — Gerard Architecture PLLC, June 2015**

> I have known Dan Koplowitz since the mid-1980s, when we worked in the same architecture office. Dan is an extremely articulate, thoughtful, hard-working architect, who makes a tremendous effort on behalf of each and every client. Dan is extremely caring, displays great sensitivity in understanding his clients' needs, while always articulating those needs in a respectful and well integrated manner, into the architectural program at hand (often, in regard to an existing structure).
>
> I cannot recommend Dan enough for his professionalism, his design skills, and, his passion for providing excellent service to his clients.

**★★★★★ — robertrocque, Sept. 2014**

> I've been building homes for over thirty years and have worked with dozens of architects. Some plans are general in scope and imagination and leaves the onus of responsibility on my shoulders to resolve all issues. the bulk of the designs that I receive are well thought out and are easily applied, but very black and white. Then there are those plans that are unique, show artistry and imagination and read like a story. Dan Koplowitz is that architect. Whenever I get a call from him about a project I smile and can't wait to see what he's up too. Dan is always available, easy to reach and work with and always welcomes input from all parties that always result in something special for clients. Dan sits at the top of the architectual mountain and clients can have confidence that they have the right man for their projects.

**★★★★★ — Karen Nussbaumer, Sept. 2014**

> Meticulous, authentic - listened to our ideas, made suggestions and implemented all from start to finish. We will need his expertise, dedication and superb skills on another project in the very near future. Absolute highest recommendation!

  - Description: This 1,650 sf beach house was designed and built to meed FEMA regulations given it proximity to ocean storm surges and flood plane. It is built 5 feet above grade with a skirt that effectively allows the ocean surge to flow underneath the house should such an event occur. The approval process was considerable given the client needed natural resource special permits and zoning variances due to pyramid law issues.

  - Description: Major addition to a 1940's French Provincial Revival home. The house was found to be constructed of painted cinder block. The addition which included a basement / pool level gym and sauna also extended the house by an additional 20 feet. The original plan was to clad the house with purchased stone veneer but to the delight of the owner, excavation for the new basement level found solid granite schist. The stone was harvested and used to clad the entire house - on-site - by skilled masons.

This major commission consisted of three additions: \[1\] a copper and glass clad Victorian Styled Conservatory, \[2\] a kitchen with an enclosed breezeway leading to \[3\] a four car garage with an attic story home theatre. Other aspects of the project included the restoration of its High Gothic slate roof and chimneys, conversion of an existing billiard room into a library and music room, garden wall and walkway restoration…

  - Description: This 1950's ranch desperately needed sprucing up. The 'U' shaped footprint of the original house prompted the client to conceive of 'filling in' the rear court yard with an expanded kitchen and sun room. I also designed the new exterior cladding and portico for the project, which brought it all together in a cohesive design. The paired columns and enlarged stoop along with a playful use of window trim, made the entryway far more inviting, giving the house some 'curb appeal' and charm.

  - Description: A modern twist to an existing mundane brick cape built in 1949 proved to be both a structural and architectural challenge. I think the results were successful. We created an up-side-down house - moving the master bedroom into the existing living room on the first floor and creating a loft like open plan for the living - dining - kitchen areas above. To further take advantage of the Hudson River views, a roof top terrace is accessed from a cantilevered exterior stair off the second floor. What wa…

  - Description: The project entailed nearly a complete renovation of the existing interior spaces along with a sizable two story addition. The expansion and re-purposing of the existing 1-car garage into a dining room proved successful. The primary two story addition comprised of a new full basement. We also expanding the basement under a prior addition built with only a crawl space in 1975. The entire exterior cladding, windows and roof were replace with the addition project.

  - Description: This wood frame colonial dwelling underwent a major renovation at the interior with two additions - front and back. A two story front addition incorporated a new portico, porch/ stoop and cupola capped tower. It isn't quite a tower given height restriction but its massing and punch windows along with the cupola gives it a distinct presence in the overall assemblage. The rear two story high addition involved creating a two story high great room and new kitchen. A second floor hallway overlooks th…

  - Description: Two separate projects are grouped in the following project, given they were implemented at the same time in an historic mansion. The bathroom project involved a complete gut renovation of one of many bathrooms on the second floor. The use of a curved glass shower enclosure gave this classical design a modern twist. A rhomboid marble tile mosaic on the wainscot blended perfectly with the High Gothic character of the house.

  - Description: The client had bullt an elaborate large organic shaped pool and called me to design a pool house. The 4.5 acre site in Tarrytown was very steep but possessed sweeping view of the Hudson River. The somewhat large pool house (1200 square feet) incorporated a media / recreation room, individual changing stalls each with its own shower, locker area, bathroom, laundry facilities, a kitchen and a large steam room.
