Founded in 1998 and based in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, Hess Landscape Architects is a landscape architectural design firm with project commissions located throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, West Virginia, Florida, New Hampshire, and the Bahamas.

The firm’s design ethos is rooted in the creation of exterior spaces which compliment and marry architecture with the natural environment. We strive to craft unique spaces tailored to each client’s tastes and each site’s singular needs, while simultaneously incorporating selective signature elements as subtle reflections of our own design affinities. We believe balanced designs are distinguished by regionally appropriate materials, incorporation of relevant historical elements, and a broad knowledge and appreciation for our natural surroundings.

The firm tailors every project to each client’s unique needs. Services range from simple consultations, to the production of highly-detailed design development drawings, to construction implementation. We enjoy collaborative efforts – working with architects, interior designers, and engineers allows us to provide specialized experience to meet the precise needs of the client. Nevertheless it is also fairly typical for us to serve as a project’s prime consultant, directing a project’s outcome from start to finish. We work directly with the finest craftsmen and artisans in the region to produce truly turn-key projects, with the overall satisfaction of our clients remaining our ultimate objective. We aspire to maintain the very highest standards in our industry, and to not simply meet our client’s expectations, but to surpass them.

  - Description: A RUIN GARDEN This remarkable project evolved from a simple swimming pool project into a much grander, more complicated venture. A simple oval pool was embellished with a vanishing edge detail, a separate four-season spa, a new open pool pavilion, and a collection of remnant structures suggesting a time-worn ruin or bygone farmstead, adapted for reuse. In keeping with the French Provençal vernacular, richly-textured antique limestone was used throughout the project for continuity. An outdoor kit…

  - Description: SEVEN ARCHES This home was once part of the grounds of the historic Cheswold Estate, owned by Pennsylvania Railroad magnate Alexander Cassatt. The Owners lovingly restored the property in 2014, implementing a renovation befitting the home’s significant history. Visitors process through three distinct garden spaces when approaching the home’s front entrance: a motor court, a walled formal lawn panel, and an enclosed forecourt with a central fountain, surrounded by espaliered fruit trees, lavender…

  - Description: TIMELESS DETAIL Located just steps away from the Barnes Arboretum, this new estate home is highlighted by the landscape design. We applied similar classical leitmotifs to those found in the contextual historic neighborhood, but selected modern varieties of plant material to render a fashionable garden. Other building materials were traditional: hand-forged wrought iron entrance gates, custom limestone quoins, caps, and balustrade, and flagstone paving are all used to support the vernacular. Scal…

  - Description: GARDEN LIVING Following an extensive home renovation, our client sought to have their grounds reflect their distinctive tastes. This created an intentional stylistic juxtaposition between the home’s architectural purity and the enchanting, flowing landscape. The mica schist stone used on the house was brought into the landscape via irregular paving, low seating walls, and a two-sided outdoor fireplace. Shade panels control the opacity of the new pergola over the main outdoor kitchen and dining s…
- [Beachfront Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/beachfront-residence-pj-vj~1767786)

  - Description: FLOATING FLOOR Located adjacent to wide oceanfront dunes, this contemporary home was completely remodeled in 2014-15. The client wanted many amenities, but also spatial flexibility for functionality. A sizable swimming pool was desired, but so were large terraces for hosting events. Instead of compromising, a pool with a movable floor was installed: when not used for swimming, the floor can be raised to create a continuous paved surface. Water depth can be controlled to create a shallower pool f…

  - Description: PHILADELPHIA FARM TO FOREST Located within Philadelphia city limits, this property’s deteriorated stream valley and historic pond were transformed at a multi-year environmental restoration project. Pond dredging removed years of accumulated sediment and created opportunities to reintroduce fish and aquatic plants. The stream was reengineered to decrease fluvial velocity and erosion, and lined with indigenous stone and plants. After crisscrossing the stream over a series of stone bridges, the pat…

  - Description: THE FAMILY GARDEN This new residence was constructed on a large lot with an extensive outdoor program. Buildings were positioned to take advantage of existing views, establish privacy from neighbors, and preserve important natural features. Activities of the Owner’s young children contributed to the exterior design planning, with spaces allocated for a soccer field and an outdoor play set. The structure of the garden reflects the structure of the home – walls and grade transitions form static bo…

  - Description: AN HEIRLOOM This project required a multi-year build out and intense scrutiny of all design details. Every aspect of the exterior design of this six acre property was analyzed and predetermined. Traditional detailing was employed to complement the English Tudor architecture, yet the infrastructure utilized throughout is thoroughly modern. Thematic garden areas were developed to indulge a diverse range of sensory experiences, including a Woodland Garden, a Pool Garden, a Formal Garden, and a Secr…

  - Description: FORTIFYING VEGETATION 2014 - NJ ASLA Honor Award Winner 2014 - APLD Merit Award Winner Until recently, common practice for re-vegetating New Jersey’s coastal dunes was to inter-plant Japanese Black Pines. However the intentional introduction of this prolific alien species has displaced native vegetation and contributed to depreciation or damage to private property. Operating within a community supported program, we have developed several sites within the town, replacing the pines with native spe…

  - Description: A TROPICAL OASIS As Featured in the Robb Report This challenging project required an intensive coordination effort to manage multiple domestic and international contractors and consultants. A four acre compound was constructed for the client’s family gatherings. Multiple dwellings, service buildings, recreational amenities, and layers of infrastructure were apportioned and positioned. The grading, drainage, and planting design were all designed in-house, and implementation was directed by our st…

  - Description: A TRANQUIL ESCAPE 2014 - PA DE ASLA Honor Award Winner 2014 - APLD Merit Award Winner A historic barn was completely disassembled, relocated, and adapted for reuse as a pool house on this uncommon property. A raised spa was appended to the end of the fully refurbished pool. Connected together by a flowing ribbon, the water became the central datum that both garden and patio spaces became organized around. Covered respites and chaise lounge alcoves proliferate outwardly from the pool. Paving mate…

  - Description: A SOUTHERN STYLE Urban-scale gardens of Charleston SC often manipulate exterior space with design sleight of hand, by placing a home’s primary entertainment space into a narrow side yard. The technique was used on this narrow suburban lot; vehicular circulation and service functions are kept to one side of the lot, allowing the main garden spaces to flourish on the other side. The southern theme is further reflected through the symmetrical layout, closely cropped hedging, and billowy contextual…
- [27th Street](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/27th-street-pj-vj~1514085)

  - Description: A BEACH GARDEN 2012 - NJ ASLA Honor Award Winner A complex design program and thorny regulatory requirements created multiple challenges on this compact, urban-scale beach project. The dated swimming pool underwent an adaptive re-use and renovation, rather than a complete demolition. The concrete grid driveway and front walk provides functional flexibility, and also conserves impervious coverage. Custom details such as the cedar fence, the asymmetrical trellis, and the Ipé deck are all hallmarks…

  - Description: GREEN WITH ENVY This grand landscape engages the Tudor manor home via a series of generously proportioned garden rooms and passageways. The garden’s geometrically-inspired formality is balanced by an indulgent layer of larger plantings, creating the suggestion of softer overarching structure. Clean lines and long vistas were emphasized by the arrangement and positioning of specific plants. Golf is a passion of the client, and several practice-length holes were incorporated, along with bent grass…
- [Bank Barn](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/bank-barn-pj-vj~1514551)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: A HOME FOR MY HORSES We consulted with the project architects regarding the siting and detailing of a new bank barn on this historic property. Preservation of significant existing trees downplayed the newness of the architecture, retaining a mature appearance for the property. Stonework was purposefully rustic in character, highlighting the property’s informality and agrarian personality.
- [Squirrel House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/squirrel-house-pj-vj~1514610)

  - Description: A WOODLAND GARDEN Formerly domestic quarters for an historic estate manor, this property’s revamp preserved the surrounding well-established woodland, which is anomalous within the built-up suburban context. The layout respects the mature tree canopy, while providing a flowing, almost unconstructed ambiance. Continuous interest is achieved through profuse plantings, softened edges, and meandering, asymmetrical pathways. Grade transitions become indistinct as features such as the biomorphic shape…

  - Description: A PARK Although every step made during the design process of this estate was deliberate, a respect for the property’s inherent natural beauty was maintained; the overall treatment is more park-like than heavily-manicured. Spaces are organized around outdoor rooms, to truly move the indoor living experience into the garden. Gently swaying mature trees, tapestries of sequentially blooming plants, the sound and movement of water, and verdant green lawns all harmonize to form a captivating, restful…

  - Description: OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT This existing residence was renovated to coincide with a transfer of ownership. The new owner asked us to oversee the renovation of all exterior spaces. The existing vanishing edge pool was renovated with an automatic cover and new interior finishes. A new outdoor kitchen was constructed near the pool and spa – we assisted with the specification of appliances, countertop materials, and utility connections/extensions. The “leftover” spaces at the perimeter of the pool terrac…

  - Description: OLD-WORLD CHARM This structure was once part of Ardrossan, the grand Montgomery Scott estate which inspired The Philadelphia Story. Unlike that mainstay of high society, this dwelling was purpose-built as staff accommodation, and as such is rustic in character. Working with the existing grade and canopy trees, we positioned an informal terrace at the rear of the residence. Stonework was rough and heavily dashed to convey an idyllic, quaint atmosphere. The rough-sawn pergola further defines the s…

  - Description: STARKLY BEAUTIFUL This luxurious pool was crafted from exotic materials and incorporates progressive details. The client selected two different types of marble for use within and around the pool. The pool was designed with a “zero edge” detail, using a perimeter slot drain to flood the coping stone, maintaining the pool water at the same level as the surrounding terraces. The raised spa’s water spills over its coping in a similar condition. Combined with a dark plaster, the affect creates two pe…
