Worked 10 hr. days to complete job in two days on home and shed with numerous windows, door frames and other extensive exterior white trim. Also did some much needed entry roof repair. > Derrick was very responsive and helpful during my exterior home painting job. He provided a very reasonable quote and helpful suggestions. My prior experience with another painter was very problematic so it was a relief to deal with a professional like Derrick. He and his crew were excellent!

**Comment from Schmidt Painting:**

> This client had hired what he thought was a quality painting company who promptly subbed out his job to another company. The company that did the paint job broke all 3 rules of painting.
>
> 1\. They bleached the house and power washed but didn't power wash hard enough to remove the soft pulp of the shingles. This means the new stain would attach to the soft pulp of the shingles and as the soft pulp started to shed off the shingles it would make the shingles look like spaghetti noodles hanging down.
> 2\. They did not wait for 3 days of dry weather to pass before staining the shingles. We do this plus we check the shingles with a moisture meter to be sure the shingles have less than 17% moisture content. If the moisture content is more than 17% the stain will bubble and begin to peel off in the first 6 months.
> 3\. They put water based stain over bleaching oil stain. This is a big no no. Water based stain will not stick to oil. You have to use a hybrid stain.
>
> I been doing this 15 years and never seen a worst paint job. 6 months after the client had the house painted it was bubbling everywhere. He was able to get the company to come back 3 times and they would sand the bubbles and restain the spots but it was clearly obvious they were unwilling to do what it would take to fix the job correctly. A year after the paint job I came out to look at the job. I told the home owner that most likely the house would need to be stripped down close to 100%. I ask the home owner at that point with the shingles completely stripped and looking new would you want to leave the shingles stripped to cut down on future painting cost. He agreed and we stripped 100% of the stain off the shingles and most of the stain off the trim and then we repainted the trim. You can see the beautiful results that we achieved on a house that the home owner thought would need to be reshingled. I am Benjamin Moore Master Stained Certified and I keep up on the latest innovations in the painting field this allows me to quickly diagnose problems and not make mistakes that other companies do. Many clients that I've done estimates for in the past went with companies that were 5% less money and then 1 year later I get the call the other company painted and it looked great but now there's bubbles and peeling everywhere and can we fix it. The answer is yes we can but the company they hired made the job much harder to fix than when we first estimated the job which means the 2nd estimate from us is even higher. I feel bad for these clients they got screwed by the other company and now they in a worst spot than when they started. These same clients become clients for life because after you lose that much money by trying to save a little money you quickly realize that quality equals value and comparing estimates from a painting company is not like comparing apples to apples and many times it's like comparing apples to onions. There's nothing wrong with onions but it's not what your hoping for when your hoping to bite into an apple.

**★★★★★ — Joe Gibralter, Oct. 2020**

> We hired Schmidt Painting for our newly finished basement. Although we initially had a number of minor disappointments with the job, Derrick was quick to address our issues and make us right upon learning of our experience. He clearly cares about his customer’s satisfaction and reputation in the community, which is refreshing to see. When all was said and done, our basement is beautiful and at a reasonable cost.

**★★★★★ — Barry Wilson, Oct. 2019**

> We have relied on Derrick Schmidt for painting services for our family cottage for a number o years now. Derrick is responsive and professional in his approach to the work. He does what he says he will when he says he will do it. I have recommended him to a number of neighbors for painting over the years.

**Comment from Schmidt Painting:**

> Always a pleasure working with you. I believe this is our 3 time do so. Wonderful to see another life long client happy with the service we provide. Thanks for writing the review.

## Community Q&A

**Q: 2 story foyer chandelier** *(in Home Decorating)*

looking for suggestions for a chandelier for my 2 story foyer. It measures roughly 8 1/2 ft by 11 1/2 feet with a hallway coming off of it. I’ll post what I really like but I’m not sure it will be too big.

A: with distressed wood the round one or the this one. Are you going to make the floors with like driftwood colors?

**Q: question on Portico / front door** *(in Paint)*

Would you paint triangle of portico same color as house ? Or leave the trim color ? And any suggestions for front door ? Here is a picture.

A: would be fine on the front only if your objections is to raise the curb appeal but defiantly better all the way around.

**Q: front door color** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I’m in the middle of redoing my floors. I was wondering what color I should do my front door. Would white be a good option? I’m doing all my baseboards white but leaving my window trims brown and the entry way trims brown as well. I do have 3 other doors brown as well. Would it be okay to paint my door white? I’m also redoing my stairs. Doing white spindles and staining the railing a darker color.

A: I don't recommend painting it at all unless you paint everything. Not a fan of other color interior doors except whites and off whites.

**Q: Cramped and Creaky to Crisp and Clean** *(in Before & After)*

The existing 1970s-era kitchen was dark, completely cut off from the rest of the house and full of dated appliances. The kitchen is often described as the heart of the home, so a well-design is absolutely imperative. The camped kitchen and what once was a family room was completely stripped down to its studs and rebuilt into a stylish functional floor space.

Against a backdrop of white custom cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances, they added a granite topped bold island to add warmth. With soft neutrals, modern pendant lights, a LED lit range hood, and some conversation-piece subway black splash tile, we were able to create the cheerful open space these homeowners had always envisioned

BEFORE

AFTER

A: Excellent work!

**Q: Need a lighter version of BM Edgecomb Gray!!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Help! I've used BM's Edgecomb Gray in 2 of my previous homes. It's always been my favorite for it's neutral tones, not too gray, not too beige, etc. We just moved into a new construction home, and I naturally assumed Edgecomb would be there perfect choice. Boy was I wrong! It looks more like Revere Pewter, with it's darker tones. I've tried having Edgecomb mixed at 50% value, but it totally changed the color, and just looked like a chalky gray. - Does anyone know of a LIGHTER version of Edgecomb?

Thanks,
Carol

A: Marylin's Dress is gray blue that is work.

**Q: paint color** *(in Paint)*

We're gutting and redoing our small home. our living room, kitchen, dining room, and small sunroom (breakfast nook) will be made into one room. We're going to put up vertical shiplap-look panelling. I want to pInt it a white but I have no idea which one. The windows in the living room face south-west (mostly south). The dining room portion window faces north, and the sunroom portion windows face east, south, and south- west (5 windows there). All the colour rules talk about choosing colour based on exposure. What do you do is you have a lot of exposures? BTW, my LR furniture is a medium brown (which I detest but can't replace or recover---they're reclining sofas). I love blue but don't like blue and brown together.

A: Also if you need a painter in Massachusetts we are the Angie's List Super Service Award winner for the last 7 years in a row and we won the Best of Houzz 2017. We also offer discounts of 30% off for work done Dec to Mar 1st.
