**Q: Dining room design and color** *(in Polls)*

Help!  My dining room needs updating. the table and chairs have sentimental meaning so they have to stay!  I already updated the chairs with new cushions and white paint. I’m debating on painting the Ethan Allen cupboard white!  Not sure what to do with the walls!  Maybe change up the chandelier too?  I need an updated chic look!  I liJr

A: Hello, njkrx.  I love the light that floods this room.  I would say that you could keep the wall colors and just change the rug to one that’s darker and that accents the chair cushions a little better.  The cabinet looks nice as is with your floors and table, but the light fixture could be more of a focal point.

**Q: Kitchen Window Treatment** *(in Windows)*

Hi, 
Looking for some direction on a valance for my kitchen window. I know taste is personal, but I just can't get used to this treatment. Does anyone else think something is off about it? I don't know, maybe because it is new I am not so quick to adjust... thanks for any tips!

A: Hello, it looks like you were going for a light, charming treatment, but ended up with barely a shade.  I would say go for something to offset it, like fabric on both sides or an adjustable layer on top of it.  Good luck!

**Q: need help with color** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Need help with a wall color that can bring this room together. The room is very large and the color on the walls now, I feel, is too fleshy for the orange floor.

**Q: Styling our staircase.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We’ve recently moved into this house and I am looking for your help in what to do with the large walls around the staircase, the platform along the wall flanking the stairs, and the rounded nook created by the curved stairs. Thanks for your ideas!

A: Hello Alyssa,

It would look inviting and be functional to have a round, cool, neutral-colored table with a flower bouquet in the curved area near your staircase, plus some sculptural pieces of varying sizes on the platform on the other side of the stairs.  Those pieces would look great in the same cool, neutral colors, too.  I hope this helps!  Good luck!

**Q: Seating placement** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi there,

We have a small home in the middle of the woods on a little island in the PNW.  I love living here, but I am having a difficult time figuring out furniture size and placement in our small living area.  
One thing I love about living in a small home is our propane stove heats our entire house.  What I don't love is the hearth the stove is on takes up half our living room.  The brick comes out from the wall five feet.  Is an area rug out of the picture? 
I am open to all ideas and suggestions.  I know what I like, just not sure how to pull it together.  Help me please

A: Great! I'm glad you like that idea! As far as the cowhide rug goes, it would look amazing in your living space because it would have organic, uneven perimeters, as well as the hues you have in your space already, no doubt. Also, the sofa looks nice because it brings in the lighter browns from your kitchen, and 94" would indeed fit there.
For lighting, it might be nice to get at least one table lamp, plus some dimmable can lights or a cool, flat flush mount for the ceiling.
If you want to go a bit greener, given the items you're drawn to, it would be most useful to keep an eye out for signs that the furnishings you like are at least local, durable and/or recycled/recyclable. ...I wish you well!

**Q: New house!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We just purchased a new home and remodeling the kitchen. It was originally a galley kitchen but we removed the wall between the kitchen and living room. The kitchen now is 10x8. The stove was originally on the wall that we removed. So my question is what do you think the best layout would be? We are considering taking the French doors and replacing it with a single door with a sidelite. That way we can put the fridge next to the door as opposed to the stove because I feel there would not be enough counter space on each side of the stove and don't like it right next to the dishwasher (looks funny to me) anyways I'm having a hard time letting go of the French doors because of letting natural light in. My other thought was moving the sink/dishwasher on to the island which my husband doesn't like nor does he want to do all the work. We are doing all the work ourselves to save money as well as my husband is a carpenter/plumber/contractor.

Please give advise. This kitchen has been driving me crazy for three weeks and not sure what decision to make. I need to get the ball rolling on this so I can order my cabinets.

So sacrifice the French doors or put the sink on the island?

A: Hello, this seems like an exciting project!  And I agree with er612 that it may be beneficial to move the fridge over further.  I would also say that you would want to move the island, too, if you did that.    When you are moving things around in your kitchen layout, it is a good idea to remember the triangle - as in, you want to create a work space between the stove, fridge and sink that flows like one.  In this case, that may mean adding the stove to the island.  Lastly,  I would say keep the French doors.  The light coming in elsewhere seems sparse and that is typically not something you want to skimp on.
