Reid worked with the tile shop to get the order right (right number of tiles) and picked them up. The entire project took about a week, which was the estimate I was given. The crew was very professional and polite and left the house clean each evening. Reid built the mantel in my garage and then placed it and painted it. I am one of those people that waits and makes all the changes together, at one time. But I have many friends that like doing small changes, one at a time. Either way works, it's just a matter of what makes you happy. **Q: Front Door** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am considering painting the front door and around the side window. Shudders are black, trim is white. White garage doors with black hinges. Brick front with faded almond siding, it looks off white. Any suggestions for a paint color or should I leave it white? A: I would definitely leave the trim and casing white. It is interesting that the color of the front door says so much about those that dwell inside the home. Here is one blog(of the millions of articles and blog written about exactly this) that does not get too wordy or judgemental but gives you a good feel for what you might be trying to convey by painting, or not painting, you front door. Another issue entirely, if you live within an HOA, is getting approval from your ARC or ARB for that kind of change. **Q: Stumped by modern master bedroom/sitting area + windows!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We have this ridiculously long bedroom (29 feet!), divided on one side by the entrance to the bathroom and opposite that, a sliding door to the patio. Our plan is to put in a modern barn-type door by the bathroom which would have to slide along the bedroom wall toward the suitcases/white chaise. So - please help! Here are my issues awaiting your brilliance :) 1\) how to arrange the sitting area utilizing the white chaise and the chairs 2\) do I let my husband put the t.v. on the wall by the white chaise (where the white R and D letters are now covering the outlet/cable)? 3\) The vintage Hartmann luggage set had a perfect home in our last house but, I can't seem to make it work in this one, so it's just piled up because I don't have any other room to put it and will likely sell it and get some type of coffee table unless anyone has any great ideas? I feel like there are so many pieces and they're making the area feel cluttered. 4\) I'm thinking a large standing lamp (arc lamp?) would be great with the chaise, wherever it goes. 5\) I need a rug to ground that sitting area - thinking to stick with the pale yellow color of the other rug by the bed, but maybe with some other colors also? 6\) I cannot stand the vertical blinds on the sliding door (no other windows in the room) and am thinking double curtains (sheers plus lined curtains) but am not sure whether I should do gray with white sheers or both white or a pattern??? A: Here's my thoughts, for what it's worth. I was going to number my thoughts to go along with your numbers, but it seemed too broken up, so forgive my ramblings. The white chase moves up the wall towards where you said the barn door will hang, with the modern arc lamp coming from the corner where the chase currently sits. I think the chairs may be too much, I would remove them along with the suitcase tables, end table and the book case beside the R and D (if the dresser where the TV is currently is not necessary, removing that could go a long way toward making the space seem less cluttered. Instead I would have a modern loveseat where the chairs are currently with a coffee table and a low entertainment cabinet under a wall mounted TV that you were asking about (for your husband). I think an area rug that compliments the existing one under the bed (either color or the spiral pattern) would go nicely to pull the room together. Currently it looks very much like two separate rooms. As for the sliding doors to the patio, I agree, remove the vertical blinds and install ceiling to floor curtains, maybe a subdued spiral pattern to compliment the rugs, with separate sheers to give you light and privacy (after all, it is your bedroom). If it does, even more reason, in my mind, to use it under the TV. **Q: Anyone have experience with Smoke Embers (Benjamin Moore)?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I think I have decided on Smoke Embers for a south facing room that gets a lot of light. I have watched it at different times of the day and it seems to have a consistent warm grey tone in the space. I was deciding between Stonington Grey and this one-- Stonington was skewing too blue. I need something that reads grey but is slightly warm as I am trying to pick up the tones in a rug that is a dark warm grey and cream. Anyone painted this color? Does it skew any particular way unexpectedly in your experience (does it go purple, green, blue, pinky?) Any thing I should watch out for? A: I just used the Stonington Gray in house I painted for a client, along with Apparition. Smoke Embers didn't make the final cut due to the green hues in certain light.
