I've will make several modifications to other parts of the plan but kitchennloction would remain the same. We'll be building in a secluded location so what passer-byers will she is not an issue, just functionality and looks from the inside. Any input is appreciated. A: I like where your kitchen is located. It's easy to access the garage for when you bring in groceries. It might be nice to have a pass thru to the porch if you are planning on spending a lot of time out there. Good luck! **Q: Balancing accent chairs with our L shaped couch!** *(in Design Dilemma)* I recently bought 2 white accent chairs for my small ocean condo. I paired it with my custom (non returnable) L shaped couch. The end of the chaise is much shorter than the end of the second chair...does this work? Or should I get rid of one chair? I attached 2 photos from opposing views. Thank you! A: I really like how you have it because the view is unobstructed and nice and open. Asymmetrical is A-ok if it makes sense which it does here. Very nice. **Q: Range size for a large island?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Would a 30 inch gas range on a roughly 10x4.5 island look too small? Would a 36 inch range look better proportionately?? 36 inch is considerably more expensive and wondering if it's worth it. I just think a 30 inch might look too small on a 10 foot island. Attached a draft drawing but the island will be bigger than shown in this picture. Thank you!! A: I don't think the "look" will be an issue. You must consider how you use your kitchen. Are you using a 30" now that totally meets your needs? If so, then use the money elsewhere. If the size of your cooking surface is a functional priority then go 36". Everyone has a budget and there are so many details in the kitchen that you must pick your battles. Prioritize and good luck! **Q: New kitchen appliances - Help please!** *(in Kitchens)* Hello, I am building an apartment (will be the second part of a 2 family) and I'm in the process of buying new kitchen appliances. Here is what I have for ideas: Gas cooktop: GE Monogram 36" Wall oven/microwave: GE Monogram Advantium 30" French door wall over: GE Monogram or Cafe Refrigerator: Frigidaire Professional standard depth Dishwasher: Not sure, possibly Bosch (want to find pro handles like other apps) Trash compactor: Not sure, possible Kitchen Aid (to keep pro handle look) Hood: Not sure. I'm also considering the Thermador gas cooktop and the Bosch wall ovens but then I would have to re-think the other appliances to keep the handles all similar. Does anyone have any experience with any of the above items or any suggestions? I'm overwhelmed with all the different brands and options! I am single but spend a lot of time cooking/baking/hosting so I spend a good amount of time in the kitchen. I want reliable appliances but I don't want to overspend when it's not necessary. My budget is around $12,000, but hoping to spend less. I'm definitely going with a gas cooktop and don't really want the microwave over that as a vent/hood. Thanks for reading this and any input is appreciated! A: So it must be a FLA thing with the trash compactor question. We have bugs galore here and cannot keep any trash inside lest we be carried off by the cockroaches during the night! Most dry stuff like paper cans and plastic get recycled. Regarding the refrigerator, I meant the depth. Just make sure your design can accommodate it. **Q: Vertical or horizontal backsplash** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am trying to decide which way to install the tile for the backsplash. I just have one wall that is being tiled. Any thoughts? And what color grout would look better -one that matches or some color of white? Thanks for your help A: I think I'm liking the horizontal, visually it carries the eye horizontally around the kitchen. I prefer to try to match grout to tile as much as possible, not darker but that is personal preference. You can also seal the grout if you're worried about staining.
