We spoke to about 7 contractors and we narrowed that down to 3 - MG Inc being one of them. From our first meeting with Kendall and Tony, we felt they were a team that we could work with. They were clear about what we could expect and the required budget - some contractors said the things we wanted to hear and were not being realistic in terms of cost, the approach etc. In terms of budget, MG were not the cheapest and were more or less in line with the other candidates on our short list. > The project started a few weeks late due to prevailing weather conditions, but basically from day one, Marco and his crew worked tirelessly to ensure that the site was kept clean, they went to great lengths to ensure that our pool, the kitchen etc were well protected and most impotantly kept their promise that we could live through the project at home (saving us the rental expenses). Most of the sub-trades that they used for the project were a pleasure to work with and did a fantastic job. The project was completed about 2 months behind schedule and that was partly due to the fact that we were late in acquiring some of the finishing materials. They were slightly over the original estimate but no major surprises. We met with Tony on a weekly basis to ensure information flowed back and forth as needed and to monitor the expenses. Overall, we are very happy with the end result - we have the desired space and look we wanted. We would definitely recommend MG Inc for any renovation, addition or new build projects. > A few things that I think gives them the competitive advantage are: 1) They never asked for a deposit up front (I did not pay a cent till after the site prep and excavation had started). They billed on a weekly/bi-weekly basis after reviewing the items that were completed during that period with us. I think this is a huge advantage with MG Inc - you often hear stories of contractors running away with your deposit or leaving projects half-way through to start on another as you have already paid the deposit, second installment etc. With MG Inc, I knew my money was safe. 2) They provide the flexibility for us to source some of the material/labour - these items are clearly identified in the statement of work at the beginning of the project. 3) MG Inc was one of the very few contractors who said that it would be possible for us to stay at home during the project - they clearly identified the conditions that we would have to be prepared for and then went above and beyond to ensure that our comfort and safety was taken care of during the project. 4) MG Inc did a great job at setting a realistic schedule and budget up front and were for the most part on track. They also replaced a double hung window in a bedroom. I was very pleased with all the work which was always done for the estimated price and in the projected time. Recently I had some issues with the storm door. Some clips for the removable glass and screen panels had popped out and were lost and the door was not closing properly. As well, I had pushed on a brace which was not meant as a door handle and it had fallen off. MG replaced the clips, tightened some loose screws (the reason for the closing issue) and put a new brace on the screen which is so strong and sturdy that now it can be used as a push-bar. All this latest work was done at no cost to me! The missing clips were tricky to locate from a manufacturer and during the time it took to obtain them Neil from MG regularly kept me apprised of the status of the search - which i found very reassuring. Thanks! **Q: Ugly basement walk out ...NEED HELP!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Previous homeowner built this addition to the home which is, in fact, a basement walk out. When you open the door there are steps that lead down to the basement level of the home. Want to tear it out, but the window located right above the addition is in the way of building an addition with a taller roofline. HELP! A: Well it sounds like a good plan to me! I think it would be better to start new - who know how well the previous owner constructed the existing entrance, aka "eye sore". I doubt the brick would be any worse then the existing exposed brick - if anything it should be in better shape. Have an architect draw up some plans, then ask a few contractors to price it out. **Q: Kitchen Backsplash question** *(in Design Dilemma)* Doing a kitchen remodel and concerned about using tile for a backsplash. Not excited to have to clean off grease and splashes behind the stovetop. Not sure that sealing will be that helpful and know that I am not good at following up on resealing if necessary. Options? Opinions? What do others think who have used grout? A: Nothing special for the wall. Did a quick search: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2011/01/back-painted-glass-backsplash.html, the hardest part is getting the paint to stick to the glass. Some special products required. But as this site suggests, Michaels may be the best and cheapest source. **Q: New house/new kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* We're stuck with these Hampton square maple kitchen cabinets. We picked this granite. Which hardwood floor color should we choose? All stainless steel appliances. A: Hardware: I would recommend a brushed stainless/satin nickle. For Backsplash, I say a light gray, back painted glass tile/mosaic. As NILE JOHNSON INTERIOR DESIGN suggested, there is a lot of movement in the current countertop. I dont agree with going with a dark backsplash in this instance though considering the style you are trying to achieve, I think lighter is better. **Q: kitchen windows, a necessity?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi everyone! We have a problem with our house plan (the house will be built this summer) We put windows for backsplash on the plan. The floor of the whole place is going to be polished concrete, and we have a timberframe. We want to create a modern but warm home. We were thinking of walnut and white cabinets, with white quartz countertops. But now, we have a problem since the window-backsplash is finally impossible to realize. Should we just forget about kitchen windows? Should we place a window in the middle of the kitchen? If we do, should we put a retractable fan so the window wont have much dust while we cook? Should we switch the sink and the cooktop? This third option seems to be the easiest one, but I don't like black cooktops on white quartz... I guess I am all messed up and really need your fresh and brilliant advices! thank you A: I would definitely not remove the window. The light it will bring to the space cant be underestimated. Also, I think it would be best to swap the sink and cook top. Better views from the sink.
