I'm looking for a navy and white comforter for my college apartment. I was trying to go for the ikat theme. I found a couple of options but was having a hard time choosing.I'm leaning towards the second or third one. I was going to add a monogram pillow to the bedding. Also if you have any rug, curtain, and decor suggestion for cheap let me know. Working on a college budget :) Thanks A: Matching duvet covers and shams are not my cup of tea. Especially on a college budget, I suggest navy sheets and a wonderful Ikat or Morocco inspired blanket folded at the foot of the bed. If your duvet is white ( or a neutral like camel or grey ) that also works folded at the foot. Keep the bedding simple and add a few wonderful pillows in the color theme, that uniquely speak to you. **Q: What lamp shade would you suggest?** *(in Design Dilemma)* A friend gave me this beautiful lamp. It is metal, quite heavy and in need of shade. The main part is 16" high, the height to the finial is another 11" and is somewhat adjustable. The width of the lamp at the biggest is 8" square. I was thinking to look for something unusual in shape and size. I am open to suggestions from my fellow Houzzers. We have one lamp store where I live, which has a great selection of shades; plus a Lowe's, but those are not so unique. I am not sure which room it will go in as I am limited in choices based on the strength of my tables...glass top vs. wood and the fact that I already have plenty of lamps....another one will have to go. P.S. My wall color is SW Analytical Grey for anyone interested. The floor is Congoleum Duraceramic Vinyl tiles. I recommend both! Thanks for your ideas A: Agreed. The drum shade you tried is way too big, especially in height. I believe the bottom of the stem should not be visible. Also makes me think the coffee color would be better with the aged look of the base. **Q: Bathroom is boring!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Need ideas for this small bathroom. Just had walls painted white so prefer not to change. Just needs a wow or pop! Thank you ! A: If you want wow, seems to me, you have to lose the white walls. Without knowledge of your style, this may be too much for you, but I'd paint the walls and window trim a deep charcoal that works with the color of the sink counter. The vanity base should be painted an off white that also works with the lightest tone in the counter top. The mirror suggested by Kimithy Nagel is perfect, drawing in more light and adding drama. I love something jumbo in a small space. The mirror should be a silver tone, as the faucet. Install one narrow floating shelf, about 6" deep, at the same height as the counter top. Run it from the counter top to the wall (over the toilet), caulk the joints, and paint it the wall color. A good place to put a few folded off-white hand towels, and cluster the small items that are now on the sink. A reverse roll solar shade on the window gives some privacy while letting the light and outside scenery in. No doubt, that would be wow. If you haven't tried deep toned walls before, this would be the place. **Q: Paint Color** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi! We are in the process of refinishing the kitchen in our 980 square-foot house. We have taken down some walls and made the space an open floor plan. I want the design to be cohesive throughout the open space, but I'm not sure what color to paint the wall behind the open shelving in the kitchen. My 1st instinct was a light mint green color or a dark blue. The rest of the space is not completely finished yet (we still need countertops on the island and I need to decorate the walls etc.) I want the paint color behind the open shelving to tie in with the rest of the small space and I want to be able to change the items on the open shelving to fit the season. Please help! A: I think walls should marry the backsplash. Gray makes sense to me, but I wouldn't go pale, I'd go mid-tone, something like slate, that matches the deeper gray in the tile. Contrast provides drama, even in a small space. The same gray behind the shelves would make whatever you put on them stand out, whether it's white, or color. Looks like you could carry the same gray, or a somewhat lighter shade of the same gray into the sitting area. Taking the same color throughout unifies and enlarges the space. Might use the color in the upholstered chairs for pottery on the shelves to tie things together as well. **Q: 1890 Colonial Color Update** *(in Design Dilemma)* Would love to update the exterior colors of our 1890 colonial. Color pallet suggestions would be helpful. A: I'm ready to take some abuse here, but can't help myself with this suggestion. If you're ready to step out of the box, Sherwin Williams has a beautiful shade of gray/ purple, Purple Finch, in the old Color Answers deck. Gorgeous color that reads gray-ish, with a definitely purple leaning, it's a muted color. Yes, larger shutters, gloss black, and a lichen green front door. Add a few chartreuse plantings near the foundation. Replace the large shrub on the left, with a hydrangea tree, planted a few feet further from the foundation. The tea stained blossoms will enhance the look. **Q: Need Kitchen Paint Color by Tomorrow!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We just bought a house and I can't find a paint color for the kitchen! The painter is coming tomorrow to learn my paint color selections! Currently, there is a pukey green- yellow color that changes shade in every light. The problem is that the cabinets are medium dark and the granite is also dark (brown, black, yellows) so colors that match the granite look poor with the wood cabinet color and vice versa. Please help! A: I can't help but caution you about asking the painter's advice on color. Generally, painters are technicians, not designers. They don't want the responsibility if you don't like the result, so they're likely to suggest something very neutral, off-white or beige, if they suggest at all. I still go with a good grey, similar to the ones I mentioned, not a grey that is very light. In a room with low natural light, rely on electricity and contrast. Sconces flanking the fireplace, substantial lamps on end tables. If you use a grey with some depth, and hang ivory drapes on the windows, you have instant drama. If the level of color on the walls is similar to the level of color in the cabinets, the cabinets melt into the wall instead of popping off of them, the granite becomes a companion to the color, instead of a problem. If you have the resources, I'd suggest bringing the hardwood into the living area. No sense chopping the area off with carpeting. That also introduces the possibility of a light colored area rug to anchor furniture. If you flip through some shelter magazines, I think you'll find yourself drawn to rooms with saturated color, rather than beige and neutral.
